Personally I define them as this and so do most newspapers these days.

First World
Any technologically advanced nation regardless of politics

US,UK,Russia, Germany, Taiwan, China, Israel, Argentina, Brazil,South Africa, Japan, Australia, Mexico etc

Second World
Those in the process of acquiring a majority technological advancement or developing countries
India, Iran,Saudi Arabia etc

Third world
Mostly African countries, but also Haiti and others.

If mexico isn't a devoloped nation then what is it?

mexico is an LEDC, less economically developed country, it is below the Brandt line.

It is a direct reference to French history, when French society used to be divided in three "Etats" or estates, the first one being the aristocracy, the second one the clergy, and the third one everybody else.
Actually, the first one was the clergy and the second one was the aristocrcay.

First you say you don't believe in universal human rights, and now you mix up the estates. What sort of frenchman are you? ;) :p
