Is prison rape a problem in other countries as it is in the US?

I've always been curious about this. Here in the US if people joke that if you go to prision you'll be sharing a cell with Bubba the 350 pound sodomist.

I wonder if in other countries such as Europe, Asia, or South/Central America if this is as much as a social stigma as it is in the US.

How common is prison rape really? Sure it's the stereotype, and the joke. But I think if you keep out of trouble, you can avoid it. you mess with the wrong people, and you are getting it. But I'm not willing to test this theory by actually going to prison. Some of it may depend on the type of prison (maximum security etc.)

I would guess that homosexuality is very common in situation where only same-sex couples are possible. Rape on the other hand seems like it would be an only slightly more common occurrence in prison than in the average big city. That is only because you have a higher concentration of sex offenders in prison.

And how do they do that? It gets pretty expensive to keep all prisoners in solitary, which just about is the only way to completely prevent it.

like when someone gets raped in prison, reports it, and instead of the establishment prosecuting the rapist, or even seperating cellmates (in that case) or other things you would assume happen, the victim gets ridiculed, or ignored, or is blamed for having gotten himself into prison in the first place.

Yes because thats what happens in prisons in America. Rape victems get ridiculed, ignored and blamed.

Most prisons are corperate and beholden to share owners. All it takes is a law suit. Prisons look out for the well being of inmates alot more then people think. Not for some humane reason but to cover their asses. The last thing they want is the ACLU at the door. Thats why prisoners have it beter then poor people with 3 filling and nutricous meals a day a place to sleep with a roof over their head, Cable TV, Internet access, free schooling including doctorate programmes and congical visits.

Some countries have rooms where the prisoner can be visited by his significant other and other countries they don't. I don't know in which category the US falls.

I'm pretty sure that the abusive conditions in other prisons are just as bad, if not worse, in many other countries.

I would rather spend 2 years in a prison in the US than 1 year in a prison in Haiti.

Probably - malnutrition, disease, and beatings can put a severe damper on your sex drive, and are of differing prevalence in different countries' penal systems.

More significantly, tho, different penal systems have different levels of surveillance and of contact between prisoners. No matter how horny you are, you can't rape someone if you can't reach them, or if prison guards whack you in the head as soon as you lay your hands on him.
