You found that out KNOW!!!;)

Anyway, the fact that there is no cure for SARS is what is causing panic. There is a joke going around here, that the SARS virus probably dies when it comes into contact with Indian blood coz it cannot compete with the other viruses!!;)

SARS is something that needs to be fought but not panicked over.

Has it occurred to anyone that terrorists don't really need to get their hands on anthrax? All they need to do is to go to Congo, do some indescribable things to monkeys and after that go cough or bleed at people in a major American city. At least as good as any bio/chem attack with produced weapons, and I am sure martyrs are in no short supply.

I heard the martyr supply is sort of, drying up Huck. On the other hand, if the terrorists are government scientists that already have access to anthrax, why would they fly to the Congo?

It is being overdone... SARS is about as dangerous as a bad flu.

Does not anybody read my post or do you have facts that differ my. SARS 5.9% spanish flu 2% normal flu 0.01%

The only problme is that the health organizations are adapted to the yearly flu and usually have a vaccacine in advance. With SARS, they will need to run behind and play catchup..

Guess that's the only problem with all new decises... that we don''t ahve a vacine or cure.

vonork: yes I read your post.

the % on SARS are not accurate enough (too little time, too little numbers, too little info) to do these comparisons.

Also, flu w/o vac for elderly and sick will be way over 5%

That's true, the rate could drop later on, but it has been on the rise from the start. But if we isolate the strain and get som medicin for it it will surly go down drastic, and it migth do that anyway.

yes, but the overall will not be that high... to single out on group is not good statistics. then I could sya that the SARS is 12%(ion canada right now) or that the spanish flu is 70% (some area in the war I belive)

vonork:

on 2: that's what I meant

on 3: I meant 5% overall if there is no vac for the weak (i.e. remeber the year ther vac was for the wrong strain and there were 200 dead eldery in GB from flu alone? all those dying without direct evidence to flu not counted?)

Many people are!

An old Japanese man who lived down the street from me growing up in New Jersey in the early 80s wore a surgical mask every day. I never thought he was crazy, just more careful than the rest of us. There's some freaky stuff in the air in New Jersey.

Did he die from contaminated water or food later? ;)

Every 30 seconds a baby in Africa dies from Malaria, a treatable disease that those countries are still too poor and aid-strapped to deal with.

(but perhaps GW and the spread of the malaria caring insect that are slowy geting up into west-europe will bring som money into this soon)

Authorities have sealed off two major hospitals in Beijing because of SARS. There are also rumors that authorities are planning to declare martial law and close the city off.

Overpopulation has a strange way of manifesting itself in subversive ways.

And here I thought you didn't believe in overpopulation...

Malaria was very much under control in most countries till DDT was banned by some ill-informed goat-head environmentalist:mad: !!!
These countries can still deal with it, if they are allowed to use DDT to combat the bloody mosquitoes.

So it's a conspiracy that DDT is dangerous?

yup, malaria was so much under control that it killed half as many people as before, than the rate went up again. Why? because you killed far more mosquito eating animals than mosquitos with it.....

forget that solution, you will never get them all.

Luckily, there now is a chaep and working drug to be on the market very soon.

the idea is to use a pesticide, as surprisingly, Plasmodium is a PLANT! It has chloroplasts, though it lost its chlorophyll, and some important reactions take place in the chloroplasts. destroy them with a pesticide and Plasmodium dies......

Very serious indeed. If Canada, which has supposedly one of the best medical systems, is being seriously infected, then of course SARS is a real threat. And of course SARS is more deadly than a bad flu, because the flu we actually have treatments for. As of right now, a vaccine that can cure SARS will take about three years to develop.

I am listening to Sky News now.

It refers to scientists saying
because ordinary cases of flu
were counted in by mistake
that the death rate is 10%.

I hope that this is not true.

Threat of virus is:

Infection Rate x Fatality Rate/Effectiveness of Treatment

If it is really infectious and they can not find a treatment;
it could take 10% of world population that is ~ 550 million.
