They do in the sense that both use a url as an alias to a different location.

The benefits of saving... what, a gig of server space? Against the drawback of spotty avatars all the time and having to coach new users through extra hoops. At least when CFC goes down, the whole thing goes down. Anyway, free image hosts are hardly in the market of hosting all the images on the tubes for companies that have plenty of their own damn space.
