JFD and Janboruta's Civilisations

Stalin was expecting the invasion, but he thought that it was going to be a few years later.

two or three years would have given the Soviet people a brilliant army, perhaps the best in the world… [but] history allotted us too small a period of peace to get everything organized as it should have been. We began many things correctly and there were many things we had no time to finish. Our miscalculation regarding the possible time of the fascist Germany's attack told greatly.

And one of the biggest 'what-ifs' in my mind with respect to the WW2 era is 'what if the Poles had allowed the Russians to traverse their territory to aid the Chechs in the event the Chechs were attacked by the Germans'? The French and English attempted to intermediate and arrange this, but the Poles wouldn't have it. Would Mr. Moustache have been not much more than a failed German Historical oddity of the period, overthrown and promptly forgotten when his bug-nuts-crazy dreams of continental domination came a-cropper before they ever really got started?

Anti-Bolshevik sentiments in Poland were very strong, stronger than the distaste towards the Germans, even. The chance that the pre-war government, especially after Pilsudski's death, would agree to such a proposal were very slim, at best. On the other hand, nazism was underestimated. If I can draw any conclusions of pre-war Polish foreign policy, the Nazis were considered another military junta, a thing that was commonplace throughout Europe at that time. (Poland was more of an autocratic republic itself at that time, with a Chief of State who was a military Marshal and a President with extensive powers etc.).

If Poland didn't tie itself to the Western powers, it would most likely seek closer bonds with Hitler, who - as I said - was underestimated. Anti-communist stance that Germany took at that point in time was a big factor. Poles even took part in the partition of Czechoslovakia by claiming Trans-Olza region (which was primarily inhabited by ethnic Poles though). This was the effect of the failure of Pilsudski's plans to create a big federation of Central European states (Poland, Czechoslovakia, Hungary, Romania etc.) that would act as a big state with coordinated foreign policy, aimed at deterring both the Germans and Russians from war.

But, we're touching alternate history a bit here, and I'm not entirely competent in that matter.

And Hitler probably expected a Soviet pre-emptive strike in 1941, so he performed his own pre-emptive strike. At least that's one of the theories behind the causes of Barbarossa.

Okay, no more derailing. Although discussing anything related to Russia right now might actually be very spot on. :mischief:

Damn, now I feel like making a story where the Federation of Central European States exists and survives the start of World War II before swallowing the USSR and Nazi Germany's holding.

Very not cool, Jan. You should truely not spread those filthy myths in such serious historical mods.
