Joe-01

Turn 0:
Our GNP and production are looking good, MM cities somewhat, set priorities
Think I'll try Hanging Gardens @ capital too, 6 turns

EOT Turn 0:
Greeks suddenly have a crossbowman in their city:eek:

Turn 1:
Swordsman pillages iron mine, drop off a couple axemen

EOT Turn 1: Crossbowman attacks our swordsman on pillaged iron tile and we lose :p Crossbowman retreats into city without having taken a single point of damage

Turn 2: moving more military, worker actions

EOT Turn 2: Crossbowman tries attacking our main stack on jungle. This time we win.

Turn 3: being patient, bombarded city down to 0% defense now, more troops will be here in a couple

EOT Turn 3: Optics come in, set to Code of laws

Turn 4: More troops arrive. Will try next turn

Turn 5:..ok changed my mind. next turn. War elephants dropped off.

Turn 6: here we go
Catapult suicides against city stack
War elephant (86.7%) beats archer
War elephant (86.7%) beats archer
Axemen (94.4%) beats phalanx
Sparta is ours :)

Let's see what he's willing to give us

We sign peace treaty for polytheism, priesthood and all his gold (30)

We then trade saladin metal casting for his Calendar
(note: here I accidentally MISCLICKED and DEMANDED his Calendar once and got a -1 modifier :( He's pleased with us after the trade though)

EOT TUrn 6:

Washington finishes Hanging Gardens :)
We can afford to expand even more build settler at 2 turns

Turn 7:
Galleys begin exploring around them, time for some infrastructure at our cities

EOT Turn 7:
Code of Laws comes in, set to Literature

Turn 8: :hammer:

EOT TUrn 8:

Literature comes in :p Set to...music. Might as well hoard all the free stuff because we can, probably civil service afterwards to spread irrigation to one of our cities on main continent

Turn 9: Capital attempts great library @ 12 turns, maybe choprush a bit

Turn 10:
:hammer:

OK skipped a lot of details so a few screenshots follow:

Our newest city. I also built a settler in our capital and we have many viable settlement spots, including these little islands SW and W of Sparta. The SW one has horses and a clam; the W one has 2 sugar and a fish. Proposed settlement spots are either-or imo, taking overlap into consideration. Of course we could settle the rest of our continent too :p We can probably afford a couple more settlers right now at least.

View attachment 112431

Our home continent. Atlanta could use some irrigation spreading to help grow faster. Civil service will do that. It can be a nice commerce city, probably windmill some or all of the hills there.
Washington going for the GL, one of the workers is chopping too.
Our settler considering where to found our next city. It can be on our main continent or another island, Galley is nearby.

Actually on 2nd thought, why not both? Just build another settler

New happiness resource near Boston thanks to Calendar.
We could probably use a couple more workers somewhere down the road on our main continent. Lots of jungles and terraforming remaining.

Looking good all around...but apparently for our people, their life candles burn at both ends..yet what a splendor of light it is

Addendum: also galleys are exploring now
and seems like we found another greek city to the south of Sparta, if need be we could war again after peace treaty expires although I somehow feel he's been crippled pretty good :)

Saladin's land is directly south of our main continent as I found out so might be prudent to fill up our main continent with cities before going aboard

Hmm, don't want Saladin spam citying our main continent.

Looks like Perplexity had plenty of clearing up to do after my turn.
Still, that was kind of the point if you refer back to the first post. :crazyeye:

Still, apart from my poor preperation and bad building judgement, we seem to be going along well. I guess the life expectancy can be put down to the health issues caused by the amount of jungle in the main continent?

Our monetary situation is not grim, but could be better...if we could get Islam and spread it around our cities (and others) that'd help. It may be worth converting to Buddhism for the extra happiness in the meantime. I think we can build markets as well which will increase our income nicely. Code of Laws is being researched at the moment, so we can also build courthouses in the cities farther away from Washington to lower maintenance costs.

Nice to see Saladin is below us in points despite the fact we haven't been beating him up! :goodjob:

Well, now that we have expanded our empire, I'll be focusing my turnset on improving it. Goals for my turn:

1) Develop the tiles in our newly acquired cities
2) Clear the jungle on our main island
3) Explore Saladin's empire
4) Expand to cover the rest of our main continent

Pre-Turn: Everything looks good overall. Our city maintenance costs are fairly high so courhouses will be among the list of buildings needed in our former Greek cities. I switched from granary to harbor in New York because the city has reached the health maximum.

Turn 1:
Forge finishes in Phil. I begin a harbor to offset the health problem. The Temple of Solomon has been built in a far away city! I negotiate Open Borders with Saladin. Exploration continues.

Turn 2:
A worker begins a mine near Boston. Upon further exploration, we find Alex in the north!

01greeks3cw.jpg

The terrible terrain implies a weak city although the sources of silver are worrisome.

Turn 3:
Good news: We meet HC! :) Bad News: Its a settler boat! :(

We've taken all the good islands in the vacinity so I'm not really worked. However, there is a small island northeast of Athens with sugar resources that would be helpful for us that I hope HC doesnt take.

Worker begins cottage in Phil. Worker begins Cottage in Washington.

Turn 4:
We finish researchng Music. Getting knights should be a priority for our next war :D so I decide to beeline to Guilds. Monarch->Fedualism->Guilds

We found the great city of Chicago! I made a mistake though. I found the city one east of where I originally intended to have the city. My mistake. :(

Turn 5:
I negotiate Open Borders with HC. We have a Great Artist from researching Music! Thinking that he may be more useful to us later, I leave him on a hill outside Washington. New York finishes Harbors. I begin Aqueducts in New York to further help growth. Further exploration means we meet Bismark!

Turn 6:
We're the second wealthiest civilization in the world! Monarchy finishes. Harbor finishes in Phil so I begin a Market. I negotiate Open Borders with Bismark.

Turn 7:
Our peace deal has canceled with Alex. Boston finishes Forge. As it is nearing the health limit, I begin Aqueducts in Boston. I start a number of tile improvements around our cities.

Turn 8: I begin a chop near Chicago to speed up the library.

Turn 9: Exploration and the likes.

Turn 10: Feudalism completes! We finally begin Guilds! :) The Great Library completes in Washington! I begin a harbors to deal with the health limit. Athens finishes a forge. I begin Courthouse. Atlanta finishes library. I begin Ganary. Sparta finishes a library. I begin lighthouse.

fter-turn comments: Again, I apologize for Chicago. :( Besides that, I think I've begun to tighten our empire up a bit. A few screenshots to highlight what I've discovered in my turnset:

HC got the resource island. Might be a problem in the long run.

Monty's main island, only a skip away from Sparta.

The previously mentioned city of Alex's, north of our territories. The silver mines are tempting...

Sally's empire border Bismark. They have shared religion so we can't expect to benefit off any conflicts they have.

Finally, the world as we know. We have a good chance of attempting a circumnavigation of the globe. But, I'll leave that to the next two players.

[0] 900AD - I take stock of the nation. Unlike Perplexity, I don't like to MM cities myself, so I turn the city governors back on. Sorry, mate, I prefer to keep my eye on health and unhappiness when I know we are about to hit the limit in a single city, rather than MM every city every time it grows in size. Turning the governors back on shaves a turn off Guilds, and has us break even at 80% science, at the cost of some production.

[1] 920AD - New York builds Aqueduct. Starts on a caravel. Harkuf, the great merchant, is born in Washington. I reckon it's a good time for a Golden Age. :) So I use the newly born merchant and the artist we got from Music on the GA.

IMG01

[2] 940AD - Washington builds harbor. Starts Market.

[3] 960AD - Athens builds courthouse. Starts Galley. I want to attack that HC sugar city, and there aren't any ships anywhere close by. :)

[4] 980AD - Philly builds Market. Starts courthouse. Athens builds Galley, starts Market. We meet France. They are the founders of Hinduism and have the highest score of our rivals, though not as high as us. :)

[5] 1000AD - We get Guilds. Start on Civil Service. New York builds Caravel. Starts Courthouse.

[6] 1010AD - A swordsman lands on the Sugar Isle. It turns out their city is only protected by one Archer, but it is also only size 1, so I don't want to take it just yet, would rather wait till it grows, so it is not razed.

[7] 1020AD - Philly builds Courthouse. Starts on Grocer. Chicago builds Library. Starts Courthouse.

[8] 1030AD - We get Civil Service. Start Paper. Sparta builds Courthouse, starts Granary. Washington builds Market, starts Settler.

[9] 1040AD - Golden Age is over. It was pretty good for us. :) NY builds Courthouse, starts Granary. Athens builds Market, starts Longbow, just in case. :)

[10] 1050AD - We get paper, so map trading is now available. Start on Engineering. Settler is built in Washington, and a Galley to transport it will be there next turn. We can either take Vilcas, the sugar city, before it grows, and settle in its place, or we can settle the Horse Isle to the south of the Sugar Isle. I also buy France's world map for 100 gold. That puts us much closer to circumnavigation, and also reveals that apparently Mansa Musa is still to be found by us. :)

Here's the situation with HC's expansion into our territory:

01-HCAttack.jpg

You can attack with troops already on the island, you could ferry more troops in if needed, and on the bottom is where I think the Horse Isle city should be.

This here is an overview of French territories (and some Malinese).

02-French.jpg

And this is the demographics:

03-Demographics.jpg

Notice we are making a killing in every category, especially Commerce and Production! Also, we are still first in soldiers, and we definitely have a strong enough economy for expansion. So, I suggest we should either settle some of those spare islands around us, or ferry some troops over to HC and commence some asskicking. :D

TURN 1 - 1050AD
Set a couple of exploring Galleys towards some unexplored terrain. Spoke to the Incans and they felt it was below them to give us Horse Riding and 50 gold...very unreasonable I thought. So I sent a War Elephant and Cat from Sparta towards the Galley floating nearby, sent the other nearby Galley to Athens for some reinforcment pickup, and declared war, planning to take the city with just the three Swordsmen is possible (only one Archer so shouldn't be a problem...however, it's only pop 1 so it will be razed, so I'm going to leave some units there until we get a Settler there. Also, sent Washinton's Settler on a journey to the southernmost Dye resource to settle...with a couple of turns of Culture, that'll be our island fully covered!

TURN 2 - 1060AD
The Incan sugar city is razed by one Swordsman. I leave the Swordsman there as defence until we get a settler there. Washington starts on the Chichen Itza (11) for the 25% defence bonus in all cities. A War Elephant and Cat are loaded onto a Galley near Sparta...I've decided that Alex doesn't deserve that siler city in the North, so that's where I gonna send this, as well as a couple of other Galleys loaded with forces.

TURN 3 - 1070AD
Nothing much...had a look at Hamburg's defenses. Two Archer's, so hopefully a good sign that Bismark isn't to far up the military tech tree. I demand all of the gold in Alex's coffers (only 20), and he kindly agrees. Let's kill him anyway.

TURN 4 - 1080AD
Louis calls up. He wants to offer us Horse Riding and 130 Gold for Construction. Pah, give you Cats? I negotiate and give him Music instead. On the plus side, our main points rival is now pleased with us, and a possible ally against the Incans due to his postion in the word. Also, he has no Construction, Machinery or Engineering, so he is well behind on the military side of things. Good news. Chicago starts Lighthouse (4) after finishing Courthouse. Just to the right of Chicago Saladin is on his merry way with a Galley loaded with a Settler and an Archer...hope he's not got any silly ideas about settling our sugar island...I switch to Settler production in Athens (5), but I think Saladin may get there first...

TURN 5 - 1090AD
New York Starts Market. Seattle is founded and starts Courthouse. Saladin's definately going to get to the sugar island first.

TURN 6 - 1100AD
We meet Mansa Munsa! He's annoyed because we traded with his worst enemy. He's second from bottom in the points list, and stuck in the bottom left of the world surrounded by Germany. No immediate threat...I trade for Open Borders so the Galley can carry on scouting around. Engineering comes in. Start Banking (3). Gunpowder next. Sparta build Granary and starts Work Boat (3).

TURN 7 - 1110AD
Nothing much. Moved some Galleys around. The Incans still refuse to talk, but it doesn't look like they're up for an attack.

TURN 8 - 1120AD
Philly's border expands to touch Washington's. Buddhism spread in Seattle, probably due to it's proximity to Bahgdad. Philly completes Grocer. Starts Aquaduct. Chicago completes Lighthouse. Starts Harbour. Bump Research to 90% for a -6 loss, as we have a fair bit of cash.

TURN 9 - 1130AD
Banking comes in. Start Gunpowder (5). Found another Alex island...can't see city or get a Galley near it. Load a Settler from Athens onto a Galley and send it to the sugar island...if Saladin's planning on settling there, he's going the long way around...seems to be ignoring the island and heading towards Sparta unless he unloads on the next turn. Sparta finishes a Work Boat for the Clams and starts a Harbour.

TURN 10 - 1140AD
The Settler has arrived at the Sugar Island, it's up to the next player where he settles...lucky Saladin didn't fancy the island after all...maybe 'cos of the 3 Swordsmen stationed there! See screenshot for where I think he's going. Galley arrived at Alex's northern island and the Cat and War Elephant got off onto a goody gut (map). Can't see what defenses Alex has, but I'm willing to bet that this is one of only two cities he has left...might not have much in the way of defense and the silver would be nice.

Wow, you people play too fast! :D

Anyways, good turnsets, both of you guys. However, I would disagree with Joe's move to push bismark for tribute. Yes, hes definitely weaker than us but we shouldn't get negative diplomacy points if we can avoid it. Besides, 20 gold is chumpchange for us.

Got it. I will play tomorrow night.

Seems like we are crushing easily. I guess that's not surprising on Noble.

But still, let's try to play well, and get our Con/Dom ASAP.

I pushed Alex, not Bismark...don't want Alex getting any bright ideas about upgrading any units!

Also, Perplexity. This was a noob game generally, although it has suprised me how smooth it has gone compared to my own games on Noble, especially how far up the tech tree we seem to be compared to everyone else.

What I might do once this SG is over, is play from the second or third save myself...see if I can do as well. :)

Perplexity, you mentioned in one of your posts that you tried to get HOF working...is that some sort of auto logger? I've got an auto logger, but it seems to only work on games that you've started yourself, and since I started this SG before I installed the mod, it doesn't work.

Also, I've noticed a "What do you want to call this screenshot?" windows on some of the screenshots. Is this a mod as well?

Could you provide a link to this HOF thingum and the screenshot mod thingum so I can take a gander...I've searched the forums but can't find anything other than what I've got...eotb tools (or something similar).

Ta!

The HOF mod thing is just a compliation of several other mods, including the eotinb auto logger thing.

It is here: http://hof.civfanatics.net/civ4/mod.php.

I'm not really sure if you should only be able to use it on games you start yourself. I think that if the "no cheating" flag is NOT enabled, you should be able to use the logger mod, even on a game you didn't start. But I could be wrong.

I dunno about the screenshot thing. It seems to be that the "what do you want to call this screenshot?" dialog appearing in your screenshot is a bug, not a feature...
