JOE-05 - The Crusades

That's fine Vra life can be taxing. Thanks for keeping us posted appreciate that.

Beware, this litte story will be updated in stages...
==============================

I'm sick from the wind and the cold, exhausted from heavy metal exercise all evening and the ensuing march to 'camp' in the bitter wind that was flowing betwixt the 'mountains' around here. So, for this reason, I decide now woudl be the best time to go and kill some heathens. that ALWAYS makes me feel better. *groan*

Twelve hours later...

"Huh?! What's going on?! Where am I?" Looking up at my field marshall from what seemed to be covers, I saw him break into a relieved smile.

"You fainted sire...thankfully, your fever broke..."

"Indeed...oh well - I've not time for this! Ready my armour! Damn this cold! We'll beat both it and that horrid Queen!"

Sitting down in my tent, I was quickly briefed of our situation - which wasn't good to say the least.

Egyptian ships were sitting off our capital, and just outside Tours, we were under threat!

Muttering (and coughing), I grabbed the reins and trotted with the General's army, while dispatching orders to the rear.

"Tell the Roman Garrison to crush those caravals, and attack the troops at Tours! Gather all our forces! Let's throw all we have - even the latrine -at 'em!" (Navy battles both won, HA taken out at Tours)

A bit later on, we recieved a favourable report that one of our glorious knights killed a foolish musketman...

Back in the field, we advanced to Akhetaten, turing our back on Memphis for now. Despite it's evil and barbaric ways, the Lord has demanded we spare it for now. (It's a fortress. And razing gets a -2 from Fred. Come back later.)

Listening to HIM, we march toward our new goal, only to be met by...a Russian diplomat. Setting up a field meeting, we hear that Peter wants...no wait...demands our World Map. I tell him to shove it. He isn't pleased. Since the meeting was concluded late in the afternoon, we also recivied word from our eagle messenger. After unfurling the parchment..."Dear Lord!" Our vicious enemy, the fiend Mehmed had launched his army with the intent to destroy Elizabeth...

The rest of the day wasn't much better. We lost two maces and a treb attacking Akhetaten, but prevailed. In fury, I bunred down the accursed hole. (City Razed with pleasure) Meanwhile, I sent the order to continue emptying our lands of all troops we could spare.

On the mental progress front, apprently our scientists were making progress on using the same exploding powder the Egyptians used...("Ahhh! Nooo! I'llltttt ell you how weee mamaade it...")

In Rome, the governer who proposed building a Hindu Monastery no longer owns a head...

Back in the field, we made steady progress toward our next objectives, but our progress as interupted by more blasted diplomacy. Feeling sorry for Liz, and because the enemy of our ene-you get the picture- we sold her Gunpowder's secrets for Paper and Music. We also made a trade with Peter's representative for Philosophy and some gold. A team of horses was dispatched to haul all this back to Rome.

Checking up with our scientists, they said they were trying to work out a way to improve national unity. (Nationalism in 23) Bah, what need have we when our Lord keps us together! Speaking of our Lord, the people of Tours accepted HIM into thier lives.

With a stiff march, we moved on Elephantine (razed) quickly, set up a siege, and after unleashing some heavy rocks took the city with light losses. The lightly defended Taoist home was ground into dust after thier Longbows failedm, their swords broke, and mice ate the leather straps of thier spears. (Bonus point to whomever knows where the mice referance is from ;P)

Taking dinner in the charred rubble, our thoughts turned to the next day - and the long patrol ahead.

The End!

Nice report .... finally ;) I was getting so bored I nearly started another SG.

Good decision on Memphis. I guess we can cripple Hatty with the capital being the last city to go , or vassalize her. That would discorage Freddy because our power will increase.

BTW there is a GG in Rome.

If Mehemed gets Lizzy's land he will become a force to be reckoned with.

This is my "got it" and will play tonight sometime. (Vra I enjoyed you storytelling. Makes for a fun turn set.)

The Black Knight dismounted and meets with the troops. Their spirits are high as the battle goes well. We are positioned to take Pi-Ramesses once some siege arrives. The great Egyptian culture offers much resistance the Black Knight notices. A mace grunts let me at them now my lord we don’t need siege. The Black Knight laughs and says to the mace soon enough, you are better to us alive.

The battlefield is laden with dead Egyptians at the feet of our army. After razing another holy city they prepare to engage at Heliopolis once they have rested a bit for food and water.

A administrator approaches the Black Knight and asks for his audience. Speak civil servant what do you want of me? There are a few minor things that we feel need to be addressed and we seek your approval my lord. Then speak and make it brief for there are matters of battle more pressing. Well my lord said the administrator we are currently experiencing no trade with our neighbours for they practice a isolationist economic code. We feel that we should practice this as well to gain from the specialist that our empire will produce. The Black Knight thinks for a minute and nods his head in acknowledgement. In addition my lord Paris is currently building a barracks and Arretium is building a forum. Paris has no production and Arretium has no commerce. We ask to stop these builds and start a barracks in Arretium and a forge in Paris for production and increase in happiness there. A forge will help our whip too my lord so do we have your agreement. Again the Black Knight acknowledges and asks how long will our empire be in a disarray during the change to Mercantilism. Two years answered the administrator.

Now a science advisor approaches and asks we are too researching Nationalism but yet our needs are more in the area of Astronomy. Black Knight again thinks and says to the scientist let that finish although against my better judgment, it is to perhaps entice a trade for our benefit. So the revolt is begun on the first turn and will take 2 turns to complete.

Turns 1-2

In anarchy but continue to deploy troops to the front. I do move the praet/axes/treb towards Giza but she attacked with a mace and took out our praet. I could have upgraded but our finances are not up to it. In fact we are experiencing a lot of unhappy and decide to use the spoils of war to keep science / happy funded and start builds here and there to increase happy. We are in HR so building some cheap units to alleviate that will help.

Turn 3

Anarchy is over and we receive this request from her highness Queen Elizabeth which I declined as we don’t need anymore unhappy right now although I’m tempted.

Turn 4-5

The forces have arrived at Heliopolis and have bombarded it and start the attack. We loose no troops and take it easily.

Civ4ScreenShot0553-1.jpg

We receive this request from our enemy. I decline of course:

Then this wonderful thing happens:

Civ4ScreenShot0554-1.jpg

I’d save him for the Taj we could use a GA to catch up. We should be able to finish Hatty on our mainland in the next turnset I believe. (maybe one more)

Turn 7

England asks of us to trade pigs for sugar. She get a lot more out of a deal like that then we do I figure. I redirect the trade into horses for pig seeing she doesn’t have copper. I did that for her to better fend off Mehmed. I was tempted to gift copper to her as well should she be lacking metals but she likely has iron as we have more than one source so she is fine.

The last turns upto 10….

We finished bombarding Pi-Ramesses to 0% and use the trebs. The first one retreats but the rest take out defenders at good odds. After using a couple of knights/maces we take Pi-Ramesses. Our 1st army is on it’s way to Alexandria. I’d say once the 2nd army is healed up and ready to go in Pi-Ramsses send them Memphis. We do need a settler and one is queued in Rome but I don’t think it’s fast enough although it may take a few turns to traverse all of that culture.

We do need some ships. Unfortunately imo the Nationalism was not the right choice although we may have a chance at the Taj but both Hatty and Freddy have it now. We need Astronomy next for the galleons and after that definitely chemistry for the frigates and grenadiers.

Hatty will offer nationalism in a peace deal but will not capitulate. What concerns me she may well capitulate to Freddy so we need to be prepared for that. Especially Memphis needs to be taken out soon to get rid of the culture there. Alexandria and Memphis are in striking range to take next turnset, leaving only Byblos and Giza north of Pisae. I started a coliseum there to fend off unhappy so we don’t need 10% Culture slider. Pisae/Rome/Paris and a few other cities had red faces. If we can build some cheap units like cats and use for MP we can then turn down the slider again. Pisae has 3 red faces and I didn’t want to see specialist lost when we need them there.

I didn't do anything with the GG we should keep him for an academy in Lyons and I believe that was the plan.

Watch Hatty's galleon just off the shores of Pi-Ramesses.

Rince, check for capitulation every turn, beginning and end, as I'm not sure when it becomes available. Does anyone know?

She will capitulate. It's better than war with Fred. The only glitch is that Memphis will remain as the Jewish holy city. After capitulation we will have to bribe her to convert to Christianity. If we can, I think it's OK to tolerate this holy city in our empire.

Alternatively we can re-direct all our forces to Memphis, raze it and force the capitulation that way. It's more risky but,

I don't think Fred will attack because we have some pretty good power now.

What ideas do we have for the Engineer? Build Oxford? Something more creative?

Vassaling Hatty

It will drive up our maintenance and we'll have to fight off her culture. We have two big armies ready to do their thing. If Freddy does DOW because of vassal I think we can handle him. It doesn't seem likely as I don't think he's that powerful.

Let our gloriouis troops remove the heathen city and take Alexandria since it can be taken in three turns or so.

Engineer

I was thinking about the Taj for a GA if we can still get it. Good chance since it's due in 9 turns.

So I hope we don't capitulate her since it may help happy/power it just gets too expensive especially if we go after Mehmed. Then we get that motherland crap too in the cities. There is one advantage I could think to vassal is this. If we got her to pleased/friendly she'd be helpful tech wise right? FORGET THAT she has a -10 for razing cities alone so just that convinces me she'd be a lousy vassal and a burden.

So I think it's a bad idea. I'd rather vassal Freddy since he's a heathen but that's when we got the grenadiers.

Hatty is weak and will be easy to finish except we need some troops in Pisae Island to take Giza.

Have fun Rince

*ahem*

I prefer not to do that for two reasons. One's historical, the other is practical.

Happy or not, having her as a vassal will mean a stronger naval presence on our west that we don't have to build. Also, we cannot afford to be DoW by Freddy. We need time to build something like an economy, not troops to fight off Freddy. Basically, it's the 1600's and we don't have time to take on a battle we aren't prepared for.

I have no doubt the Ottomans are going to crush Liz. She's not exactly a brillant General, and the Ottoman UU is in play, so no matter what, they have an advantage.

Also, Christians would NOT wish to raze the holy city of the Jews, seeing as they both worship YWEH and all.

Take a few costal cities, clear the north, and leave Hatty with what she has left after you exhort a tech and her surrender. We need to go and help Liz at once or risk facing a mighty Mehmed down the line who'll have all the advantages.

Wow, big decisions to make here. It really is a turning point.

What is our strategy for Mehemed in terms of time/tech? Are we going after him as soon as possible, or do we attack Fred and take his land first?

Is a vassal so expensive ?

I like Vra's idea about the navy of Hatty, although it reminds me of Antony and Cleopatra where Cleopatra abandons her ally, turns her ships away form the battle, 'and left our navy gazing' ... that is, didn't help her ally at all.

I like Cosmichail's approach that we dominate and force the issue. more in keeping with the variant.

Vra, as for Christians respecting the Jewish holy city, I don't think they had any respect for Judaism at all in the middle ages. The fact that one religion is based on the other is a modern idea I think.

We need a vote from on high ( Jesus ) about this matter. Let us pray...

Didn't like the Jews themselves, yeah perhaps.

But not enough to raze an 'equally' holy city.

And no, that idea was from the begining. Christians are Jews that believed in Christ.

Tough decisions indeed and good viewpoints from both sides of the coin.

vra's idea of having Hatty's naval defence if we have her capitulate is sound, but, I believe the drain on our economy will be overly difficult to overcome. I'd carry on trying to convert Freddy to Christianity, ideally before we raze the holy city for his current religion.

I don't particularly want to get political, but most religions have some "cross-over" beliefs. Islam, our primary enemy, has Jesus as a prophet. Does this mean we should be all chummy? No. Same for Judaism. Many crossover beliefs, but it's not Christian.

Destroy.

Once Egypt is dead on our mainland, get Galleons and Frigates on the production lines and head on over to Mehmed and kick his scrawny ass.

Remember to keep pumping out the missionaries as well...every city in the game at some point has to be Christian...or destroyed.

cross-post with JoE

It gets tricky because in real life the holy city is the same, Jerusalem.
In game they are different cities.

The Crusaders didn't AFAIK try to destroy the Wailing wall. Ironically the Romans did, and we are playing the Romans.

The crusaders may have destroyed other holy sites. I dunno.

Anyway it's an in game decision. Vra do you advocate going over to help Liz anytime soon?

It would set us against Peter too probably. I'd like to get Peter on our side, but that could be a pipe dream.

If you read story about Isabella she was particularly hard on the Jewish population in Spain. She had more tolerance for the Moors.

The war is practically over with Hatty. We are a bit from Astronomy and have no galleons to send our troops to Mehmed. We can likely finish her off in 10 turns with that huge army of ours. We have 2 armies and we can "blitzkrieg" to Memphis raze it and the 1st army will easily take Alexandria and move onto Blybos in no time. As to a navy sounds good if that's what she'll build. She likes to build infrastructure so that gives us no control over that. Another disadvantage of a vasssal is if let's say Peter likes us but not her he could declare on her and end up in war with us. Hypothetical as I'm not sure how Hatty's relationship is with the civs on the other continent.

We are talking ahead of ourselves anyways she won't capitulate. Don't forget too if you raze the city to make sure we have a settler standing by.

The variant states that all non Christian holy cities are razed. Can we just stay within the variant theme irregardless whether it is accurate or not. It's just a game.
