(remember it is the 19th century, and gay has a different meaning :p)

Then why exactly would we need a pro-happiness candidate if it isn't restricted?

UPDATE V; 1804

War with Britain rages on!
With a series of defeats on the part of the British, the battle for North America seemed lost. Combined with naval inferiority and pending invasion of the mainland by the French, a growing minority in Britain favored making some sort of peace treaty with the Americans, some even calling for an abandonment of the American colonies. Some, such as prominent MP Thomas Abington, were quoted as saying “All the Americas have given us for the last 25 years is debt- empire there is no longer profitable”.

The British high command refused to fold however, and gathering an army of 11,000 British regulars, weary from guerilla warfare in Ireland, launched a full counter attack into North America. Starting in New Orleans, crushing the new French colony from right under French noses, the skilled General Prevost, a loyalist who was born in New Jersey and fled to Halifax after the revolution, harboring a strong contempt for American forces.

Though New Orleans was shut down and blockaded, the British soon found themselves threatned by a newly alerted French and the Southern combined Naval forces. Retreating for the safety of the New Orleans port, the British navy hid behind the massive forts and land based guns in New Orleans. This effectively delayed the British and forced them to remain in New Orleans, frustrating the British plans for advancing toward the other southern states. This didn’t stop Prevost though, and within a few months of the landings at New Orleans scouts in the forests reported columns of British forces advancing through the thick wilderness toward Georgia, being as far East as Modern Day Alabama. Along the way, it is reported that Indians have been rallied to join the fight, and already 3 people have been hung in South Carolina and Virginia after being found out as British spies with the intent of fostering slave revolt within the states.

Outrage throughout the south has been immediate, as paranoid whites now fear a slave insurrection even more and now stand ready to defend their lands, many for the second time, against British and Indian forces threatening them from the West.

In the North, the seige of Montreal finally ended as American forces made the final push against the weak and weary British forces. Their offers of surrender and food/fair treatment enticed many of the Canadian militia, already facing significant desertion, to leave. The British regulars stayed however, and fought tooth and nail as Americans finally overtook the city of Montreal after a bloody but relatively fast assault.

Canada has been mostly quiet since its conquest, with roaming bands of angry militia and Indians offering the only resistance. For the most part, the people of Canada are starving, and winter has seen thousands of people die of already depleted food stocks. The people there are angry at Americans but too weak to react, many pleading to their conquerors for aid.

In the Caribbean, spurred on by recent events in Haiti (see below), some of the larger islands have seen sustained combat. Though casualties have been relatively light, the economic stability of the region remains shattered, and many slaves prefer to fight or die rather than return to their fields. Something must be done to restore the region to order, as even strict martial law can’t keep the large number of slaves under control.

Casualties: North: -1 NJ regular, -2 NY Conscript, -1 NY volunteer, -1 MA concript
South: -1 NC Conscript troop -2 US conscript ships, -1 VA regular ship

Revolt in Haiti!
In an event in Haiti, probably concurrent with recent instability in its neighbors and in France, the slaves of the French colony of Haiti are in full scale revolt against their white masters. At first thought to be just another normal slave revolt, the French army which had already been severely undermanned due to pressing need for able bodies in Europe, quickly found itself overwhelmed by the sheer scale of the revolt they found. Thousands upon thousands of slaves have killed their masters and burned their farms, and actually managed to seize large portions of the countryside. A man known as rançois Dominique Toussaint L'Ouverture has distinguished himself as an organizer and leader of many of the slaves revolting. A former French officer and slave, L’Overture has rallied many Haitian nationalists from the army as well as slaves to form the worlds first black slave army, actually managing to defeat a small contingent of French soldiers. Though not totally demolishing the French (and the Spanish in the Dominican republic), L’Overture has inspired his countrymen and lead the first semi-successful slave revolt to date. Even now though, French, Spanish, and some suspect even British forces are massing to launch an attack on the island-either to suppress the revolt or take the island for themselves.

US Election 1804!
The dominant issue of this 1804 has been the war with Britain and the rapid expansion of the nation into the West. At first it seemed as though Jefferson would easily slide into his second term as president, but prominent New Yorker and fellow founding father and close friend of George Washington, Alexander Hamilton stepped forward to oppose him. Instantly attacking Jefferson’s “overt attempts to spread the power of the rich southern elite to the Northwest” and his “Direct defiance of George Washington’s warning against factions and political entanglements with Europe”, Hamilton has rallied the federalist opposition which had grown weaker as war with Britain has raged. The two candidates battled with words over the issue, with Vice Presidential candidate Trimbull garnering yet more northern support. Jefferson countered most of Hamitlon’s points- warning against a sudden change of policy during wartime, furiously attacking Hamilton’s Northeastern bank saying “Who does this bank aid but rich northern elites moving into the Northwest?”, as well as warning citizens against the “grave threat of states rights posed by Mr. Hamilton”. This election cycle also saw Ohio vote as a new state, garnering 3 electoral votes solidly democratic-republican

The election was closer than many would have predicted, the Hamilton-Trimbull team proved a truly formidable force, practically carrying the North, but ultimately failed by a mere 11 electoral votes to Thomas Jefferson. Such states as PA served as the battleground- but the recent joining of the Northeastern bank pushed many normal federalists to support Jefferson’s anti-Northeastern Bank stance. In other states such as Maryland and North Carolina (as well as 1 elector from NY), the vote split toward Jefferson proved as the final nail in Hamilton’s coffin of defeat. Jefferson will remain president for four more years, but an interesting event occurred.

In the vice presidential election, which is set by a different ballot, John Trimbull actually managed to defeat Burr by a mere 3 votes, as some electors from PA actually voted for a Jefferson-Trimbull ticket, as well as one elector from NY and one from MA, among others. Trimbull was actually informed after his concession speech, as he headed back to his Connecticut home to continue his tenure as beloved Governor, taken totally by surprise.

Vice President Burr has called the results “a travesty of democracy”, and repeatedly offended Trimbull with such fighting words as “undesirable fool”, and refused to leave his position as VP in protest against the election. Many suspect the issue must be decided in a duel, as Burr’s harsh words warrant such an act (though illegal), and may be the only way to definitely settle the issue, save the arrest of Mr. Burr. If Trimbull does not challenge him for his behavior, or refuses such a duel from Burr, his honor and reputation will be severely sullied.

Only bill in Congress passes!
The only bill submitted to congress of consequence this last year was the one establishing Virginia’s military institute as the national academy (like modern day west point), and passed easily in both houses of congress. Already officers and soldiers have begun training there, and will produce their first recruits shortly.

PA averts crisis
In Pennsylvania, an army of angry farmers threatened the capital in protest to the recent NorthEastern bank- but dispersed quickly when 4 regular divisions came home from the Canadian front to put them down. A few shots were fired, and 4 people injured, but with no deaths the farmers halted their military resistance and have now gone back to *****ing and complaining.

Napoleon continues ravaging of Europe
In Europe, Napoleon’s armies continue their ravaging of the continent as well as harassment of British shipping. Already, the effect of the French naval domination can be felt as Britain finds itself short of many good-especially grain. In Ireland the British are continuing to put down the revolting Irish-though it has calmed down significantly but reverted to a guerilla war between various factions, including a loyalist protestant faction based in the North. In Dublin, after many priests were accused of “consorting with choir boys” by protestant residents, over 32 were lynched in a riot which lasted 4 days, finally being put down by the British army. On the continent itself, the French continue their drive into Germany as they renew war once again with Austria but manage to stave off the Russians for the time being.

Governor Thomas McKean stepped up to the podium for his yearly review, facing the cheering crowd outside the Capitol building in Harrisburg. He raised his hands to quiet the cheers, then began.

"My friends and fellow citizens, we stand today at the heights of a new age. I have worked long and hard to realize the potential of this great state. The fruits of our labor are apparent. Our mines supply more than half the country's iron, our new canal speeds up the shipping of our goods, and Philidelphia is quickly becoming one of the most populous cities in America. We have surpassed all others and become the state with the largest economy in the country. Truly, the American dream is being built on the backs of our brave, strong workers.

But this is not the end of our rise. I have many more plans for the future of our great state. Our doors are open for all newcomers, and they have responded in droves, as many come searching for opportunity in this promised land. Soon, a boom of our coal industry will begin, and further plans will be revealed before long. In short, our future is nearly limitless. Thank you, and good night."
