Update I; 1800
Jefferson sworn in, vows to limit federal power
The new president Thomas Jefferson was brought to Washington DC to be sworn in as the 3rd president of the United States to much fanfare and celebration. In his inaugural address, Jefferson vowed to continue limiting the power of the federal government promising “There will be no federal tariff, no federal taxes, no federal expansion while I am president”. Whether or not he can enforce this remains to be seen, as the Federalist majority in the Senate and close minority in the House of Representatives could easily enact legislation to the contrary, to which Jefferson is powerless to contend.
Napoleon Deals Blow to Austria-Peace with Britain
In Europe, the newly appointed leader of France has already shown his military prowess by dealing a significant blow to the Austrian army in Italy. Northern Italy has been restored to its pre-1789 status, with a significantly more French leaning and influence, some predict that Napoleon may try to install his brother has a leader of a United Northern Italy, something that may threaten both the Papacy and Austria. Nevertheless, seeing this victory against massive odds the Austrians signed peace with France, and having no other significant allies the British did so as well. It is unknown how long this peace will last, as Napoleon has already launched scathing criticisms against many of the monarchies of Europe, and pledged to “support and spread liberalism across the continent”. For now, Europe waits anxiously, to see if either side makes a move. In America, this has only had the impact of making the border on the Mississippi French instead of Spanish, via the Treaty of San Ildefonso. The terms of the treaty are unknown, but it looks like Louisiana is French now.

Virginia Introduces 2 Bills to congress
Virginia kicked off the new century by being the first, and only, state to introduce bills to congress. The first bill introduced was the “Norfolk Naval Act”, establishing Norfolk as the base for the Federal Navy. Until now the navy has been based at Annapolis, Maryland, who is very opposed to the sudden power grab by the state of Virginia to change the location. The bill is not expected to pass, as the reasoning behind it does not deem it necessary enough for change.
The second and far more controversial bill allows slave owners who move to the Northwest territories to keep their slaves, citing that slaves are their property and they should be allowed to keep it so long as they do not acquire more. This would also leave open later legislation once statehood is achieved to ban the slavery altogether. This has widespread support from the Southern slaveholding states, with strong opposition from Northern free states. It remains to be seen the outcome of the votes, but the nation remains divided on the issue of slavery and a heated debate is sure to follow.
Important Note: The bills will be voted upon in the next update, you can influence your representatives and senators to vote one way or another, but dont expect members of opposite parties to vote opposite ways (unless its a local issue, such as the Annapolis to Norfolk issue).
The bill can be viewed on the first page, please submit them in that format.
South Carolina passes laws through legislature, touts federal power
South Carolina and later Georgia earlier passed legislation through its legislature vowing to never pay a federal tariff if one is ever enacted, supporting Jefferson in his promise to never enact one. This provides for a potentially dangerous future if the federal government ever does enact a national tariff, as it will need to assert its power or cede superiority to the states on the issue if it ever decides to get such a thing done.
The states of South Carolina and Georgia also passed a law making the freeing of slaves much more difficult for slave owners, extending the slave trade indefinitely (there never was a restriction in this alt-hist), and failed in an attempt to pass a law restricting the number of slaves allowed to slaveholders in an effort to reduce the current black majority in South Carolina and make whites the dominant race numerically once again.

Connecticut Governor tours state, popularity soars
Governor John Trimbull Jr has been on a PR blitz, touring Connecticut multiple times over shaking hands and kissing babies in just about every town in the tiny coastal state. His popularity has soared, and many of his policies are further energizing the tiny state to a greater economic standing in New England. The port of New Haven has seen a dramatic increase in trade since lower tariffs on British goods have encouraged the Brits to go to them increasingly more. Though New York and Boston still see more trade, if the trend continues New Haven could become yet another thriving metropolis of the North Atlantic.
Pennsylvania, New York, Connecticut, Boston launch massive internal improvement projects
Consistent with Federalist principles, the aforementioned states have launched massive projects of internal improvements, subsidizing industry and building canals and roads like no other. Especially the incredibly ambitious Hudson Valley Program, most of these projects are incredibly costly, albeit not without tremendous gains.
Indian Raids Strike Ohio, Georgia, Kentucky
Indians of various Northwestern Tribes and the Cherokees in Georgia have gathered together and raided the states of Georgia, Ohio, and Kentucky. Georgia took blows as they burnt down vast plantations in its north, while Kentucky was able to rebuff most attacks across the Ohio before much damage was done. In Ohio, settlers were somewhat impeded and appeal to Pennsylvania and Virginia for aid in defeating the Indians, but expansion was still great in the soon to be state.

Massachusetts Attempting to unite New England!
Though purely through peaceful means for now, the state of Massachusetts has made obvious its attempts at a union of New England with Boston as its capital. The other states have, as expected, reacted very negatively to such an idea, citing the dramatic decrease in Senate representation if this were to occur. It remains to be seen what will come of this, but some states have appealed to others in the event of a hostile takeover of their state. RI has appealed to connecticut for aid in such an event, and New Hampshire and Vermont have done the same to New York.
War resumes in Europe!!!
Hardly 5 months since the signing of the peace treaty, war has already broken out once again between France and Britain. Spurred by an increasingly powerful and pragmatic Napoleon, Britain formed a new, third coalition with Prussia, Austria, and Prussia to restore the French Monarchy and depose the new ruler Napoleon. No side has yet made any moves, save from a few scattered naval battles near the Egyptian coast, but Napoleon and his allies in Spain have been rumored to be amassing a tremendous fleet, dubbed the second armada, in order to bring the fight to the British mainland….
With the breakout once again of hostilities, and the threat of naval invasion, British naval vessels have been rounding up and impressing American sailors and forcing them to serve in the British navy. President Jefferson issued an official complaint which was ignored by the British leadership, and for now the impressments hasn’t impacted American trade too significantly. In fact, with the breakout of war resumed, states such as New York, Connecticut, and Massachusetts have been profiting from the skyrocketing demand of timber and ships by the British Navy. As such, their income has been boosted.
