Just as we get near a final 1.21f patch..

I can't f*cking win with this port. ;)

This much seems certain: the Mac 1.21f editor will appear before the Mac 1.29f (or whatever) patch.

My gut feeling is that the Mac version will stop with 1.21f. A big problem (aside from the fact that each patch sucks up a few weeks of my free time) is that the editor and patch go hand-in-hand: you can't use an older version of the editor with a newer version of the game.

I think anyone here is very greatful for what Brad is doing for us, but I'm still angry to see that we will again be waiting a couple of months for the new patch becose someone somewhere think that mac player are second rate gamer and that we're not worthy of support.

I don't mean any insult to Brad but I seriusly think that infogrames/firaxis/macsoft are a bit stupid to take us for granted.

Wonderful...so, us Mac users get half a game, once again. (And I know it wasn't your doing, Brad). How nice. Words fail to describe it. I like the game, but it would be nice to play succession games with my PC pals. Haven't had a full non-beta 1.21f to play with them yet, and by the time I do, they'll be on 1.29f. And then they'll create stuff that we won't get to touch, as we, from what you said, will never have 1.29f.

Hey, Brad, who is it that I email at Infogrames to complain, for all the good it will do me?

It's not like MacSoft doesn't want me to do another update. It's just that it's getting harder and harder to find the time. It's been nearly a year since we started on it, and I (and most other Westlake programmers) have long since filled our schedules with other stuff. Even if MacSoft offered to pay to do more Mac Civ3 stuff, I don't know when I'd have time to do it.

It's always nice to see that someone care, thanks Brad... but it doesn't change that some companies like Blizzard are far more respectfull of us... and I will not buy anymore civ games unless it is produce by someone who will support the mac port...

Actually, we'll probably get the final version of Civ III when we buy the expansion pack (which we surely will, no matter what we say now). Then we can go through the same thing again. Won't that be fun? :aargh:

Brad, who is out there that can do it? What kind of places do you programmers frequent? I'll leave tomorrow. ;)

I find all this very discouraging. I love the Civilization series, but the continual patches on the PC side and the process of getting them ported to the Mac have led me to put this game on the shelf. I think Brad Oliver does great work, but the circumstances under which he is working on this game are intolerable.

From now on, I won't be so quick to buy a game when it is released. I'll wait and see when and if the kinks are worked out.

Brad -
Now that the readme for 1.29f is available, does that change your thoughts on how likely we are to get it?

I'd say it decreases the odds you'll see it on the Mac by quite a bit. Look at all those editor changes! It's like a whole new app now. It looks like a ton lot of work to bring it up to 1.29f in terms of features. It's moments like this that I regret ever wanting to bring the editor to the Mac. If it weren't for that, patching the game itself to 1.29f would be a no-brainer.

Anyway, don't take my opinion as the final word on it - you never know what will happen.

I don't know if I'd use the term "intolerable". In my eyes, Civ3 is an extreme example of when the idea of porting a game to the Mac by a third party totally falls apart. It's one thing to port a game that doesn't see much in terms of future updates, and quite another to port a game that has a continuing development cycle.

You can't really fault Firaxis for wanting to patch the game - in my eyes, they're open to balancing and enhancing it after shipping, which is a rare and good thing. Blizzard and id do very similar things - the key difference is that they have Mac programmers on-staff who are paid to keep the Mac port up-to-date. That's a luxury that no good porting house can easily accomodate. In fact, it's probably our worst nightmare.

So Brad, how is the decision to update the mac version to 1.29f gonna come down? Where is the decision going to be made? Macsoft?

Is it plausible that if PTW is ported to mac, we'll get the 1.29f version then?

Hi,
I do know that when I contacted MacSoft about the 1.21f Patch, I was directed to James Robrahn <jrobrahn@us.infogrames.com> who is their QA Lead in charge of that project. Perhaps he would be one to contact about the 1.29f patch?

MacSoft almost certainly would want me to do the 1.29f patch, so asking them about it will probably not do much except frustrate everyone involved. It's time to get used to the notion that 1.29f will probably not come to the Mac. That way if some miracle happens, you can be pleasantly surprised instead of frustrated. :)

The problem is the editor - it would be basically stalled at 1.21f, and you can't use the 1.21f editor with 1.29f of the game. That would make the editor virtually useless. Furthermore, updating the editor to 1.29f looks to be a Herculean task for which there is neither time nor money for anyone crazy enough to complete on the Mac side. We all got an earful from Mac users who felt cheated that the editor wouldn't run under 8 or 9, so it'd be nuts to do a half-assed 1.29f release of the editor.

As for PTW, I could only speculate since it's unannounced for the Mac. My hunch would be that if it were brought to the Mac, it would be sans any editor at all. Once bitten, twice shy as they say. If someone ends up porting PTW to the Mac, they'll undoubtedly have enough complaints about the lack of Mac<->PC networking that the "lack of an editor" complaints will hardly register. ;)

Well, enough said. I'll enjoy 1.21f w/ the editor (I'll have OS X by the end of the week.).

EU2 for Christmas! Cannot wait! I've got the fansites bookmarked and ready to go.

Edited (7-18-02): Sorry Brad, but I'm emailing just the same. I hope the frustration is bearable.

Hi there ! I didnt understood everything that was saying here but I see that once again the Mac update will come later than the PC one. Im not very surpised...:(..But thats not the matter, sorry for the topic ignorance but Im searching a way to make the civs begin in their right locations on the maps based on real-world (europe, world....) instead of seeing America starting in Italy and Germany in Africa..I know that a such editor exists on PC (CPT) but is there an equivalent on Mac, where can I find it ? Thank you !
