KK-01 – Fear of Flying

Good work sooooo.

At the rate we're going, we'll have this thing in the bag by the time it comes back around to me.

If we just want to go for a conquest/domination victory, then let's keep the conquests rolling after Saladin. I noticed Montezuma was looking at me funny in the diplomacy screens.

I'd also be interested in trying out the Sucession Game of the Month, unless the time commitment gets way excessive.

Well, Monty got Mecca. It was simply not possible. I had two units with movement available the turn before he took it, and Mecca had four defenders.

We got the GL and the Parthenon. Forge in Madrid and Seville. Market in Madrid. These cities have been whipped: Madrid, Seville, and Rome. I did a lot of roading to help consolidate our empire.

Construction is done and we can build phants and cats. After consolidating Baghdad, i noticed that Saladin had built a city to the east of Medina. Sending the stack from Baghdad to there. Hope to beat Monty.

I spammed archers out of Barcelona for our new city defenses, so that our melee units can be freed up for other jobs.

Monty shook us down for corn. He went from annoyed to cautious, which is the best that you get out of him under the religious circumstances. Watch out for FDR! He and Monty are not getting along, and he keeps trying to trigger one of Monty's psychotic episodes. He offered spices for [something], and i turned it down. He also wanted me to stop giving corn to Monty (cancel deals). This would have definitely pushed Monty right over the edge. Dont be surprised if Monty wants us to stop trading with Roosevelt altogether. Considering that, it would be prudent to build some galleys to cover our fishing if things go sour with FDR.

Our econ is in pretty good shape, we are researching @ 50% losing 1 GPT, and HBR is due in two. With our two scientists, we can get Feudalism in ten, Calendar in four. Our larger cities need two defenders minimum, or they get unhappy.

Shame about Mecca Talamane. Monty will just have to be our custodian of the city until we are ready to ask for it back. And if he's not willing to give it back then he will have to suffer the consequences.

Good stuff on the Great Library and the Parthenon. I am playing another variant where it is our goal to get every world wonder. I hope the AI in that game is as slow in building wonders as they are in this one.

Sounds like the diplomatic situation is getting a bit tricky. I will see what I can do to screw it up even further then.

And I'm up. That gives me something to do tonight. I will have to re-read some of the last posts to see what we've been up to. I notice that since the start of my last turnset we have gone from last in score to easily first. Now that's a good rotation guys :goodjob: .

Roster:
-- Kikinit -- Up
-- Ralph_Jackson -- On deck
-- mike_p
-- sooooo
-- Talamane -- Just finished

On succession gaming, I think the time commitment is not as bad as I thought except that the games require a lot of discussion and can be played out over quite a few months. I recommend reading some of the SGOTM team threads for Civ3. Some of them have 1500-2000 messages! So it would require people who are planning on being around in CFC for a while.

Ok guys. The SGOTM1 sign-up thread is open here. Before I sign up, I was hoping to see whether those who signalled interest are still interested now that the sign-up is called for.

So how about it Mike, Ralph and sooooo? I can try and find one more member to make a nice 5.
.

Yes I am interested. I take it we will be team "Fear of Flying" !!

Ralph

Is there some xxxx-phobic for flying? Maybe we can call ourselves that.

By the way, I won't be able to play for another 24 hours so if you want to Ralph we can do a swap. I have 48 hours to play but it's best to work to everyone's free time, so if you can do it then go ahead. Otherwise I'll do it tomorrow night my time.
.

As its good to keep the pace up I will play and post tonight therby swapping with Kikinit.

If we want to use the offical phobia name then we have to become team
Pteromerhanophobia - don't ask me how to pronounce it!!!!! Now you know why everbody just says fear of flying!

Excellent stuff. Fast SG's are always better at keeping all the players around so no-one loses interest.

That's got to be a joke? The websites I found didn't give a name except one which called it Aerophobia. Anyway.. still a stupid name. If you want to sign up, just say the team from the SG KK01 and team name to be determined.
.

Just so I'm clear, it's Ralph, then Kikinit, then me for this cycle, right?

I'll sign up for the 1st SGOTM and see how the format goes.

Back to our game, let's build lots of axemen to hunt Jaguars with. It sounds like we'll need them eventually.

Techwise, if the two main choices now are Feudalism - which give us Longbowmen and is the last prereq for Guilds & Conquistadors or Calendar, which let's us get incense, spices, and dyes (if I remember the map correctly), let's get to Guilds. Then we can beeline to Astronomy afterwards and pick up Calendar on the way. We can get by with happiness from Hereditary rule.

Edited to add:

OK, I just looked at the save again. Saladin's last city is crap. It's all hills and ocean with no food bonuses. We could raze it, but I'd suggest we don't bother taking it. Let's shake him down for a peace treaty and let our war weariness go away in Rome.

Here are a few apparently minor things that could go a long way: Calendar is available for trade from Roosevelt for Alphabet and cash. Just need to raise the cash somehow. Rome and Barcelona both need workers improving them. Rome needs more production and Barcelona more food. Tokugawu has built the Pyramids at some point. He's a much easier victim prior to Samurai. Being Buddhist isn't making us many friends - a few turns of no state religion will get some of our borders popping and the happiness won't be as big an issue if we are at peace for 5 turns or so repositioning our stacks.

A couple of galleys in Seville would be nice too - they can protect our nets, send a worker around the mountain to build a mine, and allow us to stage an invasion of Roosevelt's horses on the eastern island if we end fighting him. Or we can upgrade to galleons once we hit Astronomy and get a jump on the New World.

And more workers would also be good. It looks like with Caledar we can get spices, incense and sugar, and bananas with one border expansion (not that we need the health).

I agree with the no-state-religion - Medina needs a border pop and is the Jewish holy city (something I failed to mention in my report). Instead of building axemen we could wait for machinery (which we should get soon/next as we need it for guilds IIRC) and get some crossbows. In the meantime, it would be good to build some cats - lots of cats.

Well played it and then found Mike P had posted some good advice which I had missed  the good news was I had worked it out myself

Turn 1

Check relations between FDR and Monty and surprisingly the relations are fine. Use this fact to let me trade Spices for Gems for an immediate boost to happiness. Rome is running 3  and this will help solve it, move the Archer from just south of the city to improve happiness again.

It is clear that Saladin is going down and we have no forces that haven’t move that could capture the city. So what do we do? we extract Tech’s out of him for Peace and then let Monty take him down (Some of Mike P’s superb strategic vision must be rubbing off!)

And yes he goes for it. Immediately switch to Org Religion for the building bonus

Do my usual bit of detail conscious MM, so come on what are we doing building a cottage here instead of the alternative Grassland Site?

Turn 2

Saladin pops his clogs

cultured.jpg

And we are tbhe nost cultured CIv out there.

Seville finishes: Forge
Rome finishes: Buddhist Temple
Medina finishes: Granary

Turn 3

HBR comes in and having snagged Calendar for me Machinery is definitely next, by the time it comes in we should have built a few Catapults ready to start on Macemen and push towards Conquistadors

Turn 4

We pop a great scientist (Plato if you are interested). He could Light bulb Philosophy but as wee already own the Holy City for Taoism  I despatch him to build an Academy in Rome which with its excellent commerce output can be another research powerhouse.

Turn 5

We need to watch HC, he has appeared with Long bowmen and demanding Alphabet (refused!) so he is a we bit miffed at us but as we are building militarily not really a threat.

Turn 6

Sufficient courthouses built to allow us to star a Forbidden Palace in Neapolis. As this is on our southern borders it will stop city upkeep going daft as we expand southwards. Start Seville onto the Colossus as it and others are working a few water tiles and it had nothing else pressing to build!)

Turn 7-10

A few Cats built and Buddhist Monks (on goto orders ) despatched to our southern cities to secure the 25% building bonus). Cumae is having its last two mines prepared and will be a real military powerhouse for us in the future. Our economy is still strained by the size of our empire so I am building some markets where it makes sense and spreading religion to help our economy. We need to pop a great prophet as we are giving away money not having our shrine built. Apologies for not spotting this earlier so I have done nothing about making it happen

Baghdad’s borders are in a culture war so I have prioritised culture buildings for it.

Sounds good Ralph. But Saladin was willing to give up monotheism and calendar, but wouldn't throw in his 10 gold?

Buddhist monks are a good idea. We have 5 different religions in about 8 cities, so we need to make one dominant if we want any of the religious civics to be helpful besides Free Religion.

So Kikinit's up and I'm on deck, right?

Good progress, we should get to attack someone else soon (toku or monty?). I've just got a few points about worker actions and tile management. These aren't meant to be criticisms of previous players, as I'm sure there were more pressing things needed, but advice for the next players and meant to promote discussion.

Cumae is food-poor cannot work its mine. Yet we have two workers building two more mines for it, both unworkable unless growth becomes stagnent. At Neapolis we are replacing a forest with a cottage, but it isn't even working the one cottage built there. Instead it is working the forest we are chopping. We also have a jungle tile we could cottage here instead, or plains tiles that can be farmed due to the irrigation spread through the city. Either way, Neapolis isn't short of workable tiles. Unlike Barcelona, which is forced to work 2 unimproved plains. It has 2 unimproved grasslands which could be cottaged. Similarly, Damascus has no more workable tiles when it grows and has no culture. For Damascus to mine its 4 (!) hills, which would make it a production powerhouse, it severely needs a border-pop in order to work the bananas (4/5 food IIRC). I suggest cancelling the forge here and whipping a library or something for some culture.

In terms of overall strategy: We are at an important part of the game when the AI start researching feudalism, and their best defender jumps from being an archer/axeman to a longbowman. By the time we have conquistadors, most AIs will have longbows. Should we attack someone without longbows soon with macemen, swordsmen and catapults?

I've got to rush off now, so more comments later, but good stuff Ralph. I love the way you got the techs out of saladin just before his demise.

Roster:
-- Kikinit -- Up (swapped with Ralph)
-- Ralph_Jackson -- Just finished
-- mike_p -- On deck
-- sooooo
-- Talamane

(To be honest mike, if you can play in the next 10 hours, you can have it too, but it doesn't really need to go that fast  )
.

Go ahead K. If I saw your post earlier I probably would have run with, but I do need to sleep sometime. If you pass it on before Tuesday night, I'll take my turns then, possibly sooner. Besides, if we get too far out of order you might end up taking back to back turn and start building SS Casings. ;)

That's cool mike. I think it's best as you say that we don't get too far out of order. I will be playing tonight my time.

sooooo, I will see if i can sort out some of the worker builds for you. We are short on workers anyway going by the comments in the turn reports. I think this will be a consolidation set to cement what we have and get ready for our next expansion. I will look at getting culture going in Damascus.

A great prophet is also on the books.
