It's Easter and I'm expecting to have too much time on my hands, so I am going to start this rather ordinary new game if there is enough interest.

KK-01 – Fear of Flying

Pre-Amble

I have played a few succession games and always seem to be winning by launching into space. My last single player game also ended in this style. Thus I want to win by any means but space. I would not turn space off as the AI is free to win however they want. I on the other hand don’t want to go to space anymore. In fact I will expand on this and play with the premise that I am afraid of flying. That means flight is to be avoided also.

Not too tough I shouldn’t think as plenty of SG’s out there go for domination and conquest and may by-pass flight anyway. I have just never been involved in one and think it's about time that I was. This statement should not be taken as being a vote for domination and conquest. Cultural and diplomatic are equally good ways to win and in some ways I prefer them as I find them so very difficult to achieve. Time is of course out as the AI will normally launch sometime around the year 2000 at Prince difficulty level.

This will probably mean I will have to change my play style as I always seem to just fall back to a default of a space win.

This is not a variant as there are no restrictions except flight and that can be easily gotten around as far as I can see. Some games when you are bee-lining for space techs, you may just ignore it altogether so it's not a handicap at all. Just a premise on which to have a fun game :D .

Any one else out there sick of winning by space and developing a Fear of Flying? Any interesting ideas to spice it up a bit?

The Game

Based on this premise, it will be a relatively normal game but we will need to see the starting roll to determine what direction to head. Due to our fear of flying, all techs are allowed except flight. Launching objects into the air on the other hand is actively encouraged and will probably be quite necessary.

Game Settings

  • Map size: Standard
  • Game speed: Standard

  • Raging barbs: Off (Can be on if wanted) --> EDIT: Raging Barbs are on the grill!
Roster: --> EDIT: FULL AGAIN

-- mike_p (15)
-- sooooo (10 turns from here on out)
-- Talamane

Alternates:
-- GreyFox

Anybody is welcome as long as you are up to playing at Prince level. After much thinking about it, I have gone for Prince difficulty. I'll consider raising the difficultly if there are enough experienced people to play at that level. At Monarch level, experienced players are much more important. At Prince level it should be a bit more forgiving. Please indicate a preference. I myself consider Monarch level to be quite a challenge, but it can be done. And who wants things to be easy?

SG Etiquette

Normal SG etiquette applies. 24 hour got it, 48 hours to post. Missing the 24 hours is an automatic skip to keep the game flowing. We will only drop people who routinely miss or are not heard of for a period.

Lurker's Comment:

Good premise, though it might be too easy to just dominate or conquer in the pre-flight eras. Maybe you could role play to require a victory after 1900. You could also go a step further by requiring SAM and destroyers in an unbalanced quantity.

Definitely sounds interesting :D to me. I am at the "usually win on Prince but can easily still lose if I make a misatke" :mischief: level so would prefer Prince to Monarch. However if more experienced players join and want Monarch and don't mind giving me advice that is also cool.

I like the theme, but it is quite generous (not much of a restriction) and might be worth buidling on e.g

Isabella of Spain - "The world is clearly flat because his Holiness says so" so no flight, no space travel, no circumnavigating the world bonus & Must Research Christianity as soon as it is available, must not research another religion giving tech until the relgion has been FIDL.

@rex: Actually I am just sick of winning by space and want some other type of win. Fear of flying is just me justifying that we can't win by space. You may find it easy to get early domination or conquest but I tend to find my wars dwindle out as I get too worried about my economy and then I eventually win by space.

@ralph: So can I count you in? I was thinking that I could add no rocketry as well, but as rex noted it's a bit late game before there is any restriction. I like your idea of playing isabella and sticking to no circumnavigation as the world is flat. If you're in we can work on that idea.

@Grey: too busy? That's a shame, you would be an asset to any team.

scorpion, you are welcome to play. All I ask is that you see it through and contribute what you can. Can't ask for much more.

Definitely in if you want me. Feel free to do what you wish with my development of your idea as it is you Idea for an SG and I was just trying to flesh it out.

Ralph

If you still have a roster spot open, I'd like to give a succession game a try. I can usually beat on Monarch and win sometimes on Emperor, so this sounds like a good game for my first sucession game.

I'm assuming that it will be using the new patch?

A good question. People involved in other SG's may not wish to apply the new patch just yet in case it changes to much an they may be committed in theri other SG's to staying on 1.52) so we should certainly agree new patch or Sticking with 1.52 BEFORE we start.

Personally I would stick with 1.52 until we know if there are any issues with the new patch just in case.

Ralph & Mike, you're both in. We only need 1 more and we can get going.

I think with the patch, we'll discuss it when it comes out. I have no idea what my other SG's are planning to do or what it will do anyway. Let's cross that bridge when we get to it.

Ralph, to be honest with the idea, all I wanted was a game that doesn't end up with winning by space so let's just play a standard SG and keep that target in the back of our minds.

Scorpion, I've moved you to the bottom of the roster.

Let's discuss the final settings so I can roll a start and get this game moving. I think the difficulty level of prince is a good starting point. If we're all together and doing well at the end, we can try and monarch level game.

On map type, I was thinking Terra so we have to develop a strong navy. We won't have flight later, so we'll have to rule the seas instead. I also like to turn raging barbarians on, but what will be the outcome in this map with it on? I have got the new world before without them on and they have huge developed cities already. With raging barbarians on, they will probably have the whole continent filled and it will be a real challenge to just get a foothold there. Sounds like fun :D .

On leaders, I think Isabella of Spain with Expansive and Spiritual will be a good leader for us to start with. At least we won't have to deal with her diplomatically that way. I don't think I've ever played as her and have no idea what her Conquistador is like. She has fishing and mysticism as starting techs, so we could go for a religion straight out of the door, get a few worker techs, build the oracle and slingshot to code of laws. I find this slingshot relatively easy to get as you only need writing. Problem is not to ignore too many worker techs and if we've got raging barbs on, we'll need copper or iron too!

So let's here your ideas and hopefully one more person will volunteer and then we can get going before we're too far into this easter long weekend.

EDIT: The patch is out. I came in here without reading even the front pages so missed that. I guess we are at the bridge and will have to cross it already.

It's my opinion that we should all patch before we start a new game. It doesn't make sense to do it mid-way through.

One of my other SG's is patching immediately and the other hasn't said anything yet. I think I am going to do it straight away and have a try in my single player game.

GreyFox, thanks for that. I will put you in as an alternate for now and roll a start in a few hours. Hopefully I'll get one more by then. By the way are you upgrading to the new patch yet or waiting?

EDIT: Um.. hopefully I can get some feedback on the last few settings before I roll...

Well Prince, Terra sounds cool. I have never played it wath Raging Barbs on and seen the effect on the new world but it should be entertaining.

If most people are patching then I guess we should to - I do think it is important that we are all using the same version so you need to make it clear from the start of Patch or No Patch.

Ralph

Now. Here are the settings I am rolling. Start position up shortly.
