KK-06 -- The Special One

Ouch. Our economy really is a mess. :crazyeye: The war is ongoing and really really tough. All of the major cities I got to were on hills with walls and archers with CG1. :( Our exploration has been a bit poor as we don't know where half of Roosevelt's cities are even though we've had open borders with him.

I'll get the report up in a while. I've got to put the pictures together first and write it up and eat dinner!

omglazers has left things looking good.

Roosevelt has the same power as we have but only 2 archers in the only city visible in this turn. Where is his power coming from? We need to declare now and get this started before he gets even more powerful.

Civ4ScreenShot0031.jpg

State of our cities:
Builds: We're building swords in all our cities. Unit cost is already 10gpt and our economy can only just survive at 0%! We will be surviving on the proceeds of war it looks like. 0% with only 4 cities really stinks. I think I'll have to forgo building too many more units after this lot.

Civ4ScreenShot0032.jpg

Designations: Mecca is our GP farm, Medina is a production city, Damascus is a commercy city* and Baghdad is a hybrid city.

*As I went through this and read my rules, I realise that I called this a commerce city but we need to specialise it as a gold or science city! I chose science city here as we can change to gold city if it every becomes a holy city. I presume that as Roosevelt and us are both confused, one of his cities we can't see must be the Confucian holy city.

Signs added:

Civ4ScreenShot0033.jpg

I start by declaring and selecting all the units in Medina except 4 axes and 1 spear. The remaining units will head for another city once more swords arrive.

Civ4ScreenShot0034.jpg

New York when I get there had 1 sword, 1 axe and 2 CG1 archers. Starting odds on CR1 sword are 9.9% v. Axe, CR1 axe is 16.6% v. CG1 archer. City also has 50% cultural defense. Time to roll the dice.

I end up taking the city with the loss of 3 swords and 1 axe. Even money so far. The fights were all tough and it took all 4 units to weaken each of Roosevelt's units. I designated NY gold city but this can be vetoed if anyone things better of it.

OUCH! I realise at this stage that we haven't read the rules properly again. As damascus is science it needs to build a Madrassa. I start one to meet the rules.

Double OUCH! Roosey is sending forces at us all over the place and eventually one of his archers take out our copper over east. I had no local units that were strong enough to put on it and defend. After that I put a sword there for a while to protect it whilst I connected it back up. In fact I spent quite a bit of time swapping units around at Medina to the copper depending on what units Roosey sent to attack. Managed to do quite well and took out a fair number of chariots and ocassional axe with a loss every now and then.

When I got to Washington, the odds were terrible. I decided to pillage a bit to see if I could draw a few units out. It didn't work but I cut off his horses at the capital.

Civ4ScreenShot0036.jpg

His capital is on a hill with 6 defenders & walls. It's suicide! His best archer has guerilla 2 and is a fearsome unit with those hills, walls and cultural defense! I decided at this stage to look east for some easier pickings. We'll have to come back for the capital when we've got cats. EDIT: I know the picture shows 4 but I was still waiting on some units to arrive and could not attack before the next turn when there were 6 units.

Atlanta is out to the east and is also on a damned hill! it's only size 1 anyway so I leave it for now and look further south.

We got a GG. I need a unit that can crack these cities so I promote an axe to CRIII + Combat I + Shock. I realise later that I should have put cover instead of shock but have to make decisions at the time so it's too late by the time I realised later.

Triple OUCH! Our economy really stinks at this stage. As I've spent so many turns exploring which during war takes forever! We've spent all our money are -ve at 0%!! I have to kill of all our warriors to get it to even at 0%.

I send some units to cut of Roosey's iron so he's now without iron and horses (that we can see).

I finally found a city we can hit that's not on a hill! I took Chicago with the loss of only 1 sword.

Civ4ScreenShot0037.jpg

After even more exploring I found the holy city, Boston, on the western coast.

I lost the GG taking the city. Sorry about that but it was the only unit with any where near decent odds but we then took the city with no more losses. The city doesn't yet have the Kong Miao which is a real shame but we'll just have to prioritise a great prophet to get it as soon as we can.

I finally decide to stop here. I played too many turns but didn't want to hand it over in the positions I was in where I had units heading back and forth trying to work out where everything was. At this stage I think we should take peace and try to get a prophet and build some cottages to get our economy on track. We are in enough trouble economically already without taking any more cities.

As you can tell by my tone, we could have done a lot better with our exploration. We've had open borders with Roosey for ages and had no idea where his cities were when we declared. With some fore knowledge, I could have gone straight for the holy city instead of going east then all the way back west. During war this takes a very long time and needs decent stacks so as not to get decimated. Oh well, live and learn huh :) I enjoyed the turns even though it looks like we might struggle to win from here.

EDIT: Forgot to post this picture of our kingdom.

We'll need to do something to stop Boston flipping. The only way I can see doing that is to take philly and Washington, but we can't do that until we get cats, which we can't do because our ecomy's is bollax, and we can't fix that unless we keep Boston.

You can tell that I always see the glass half full.

For now, I think this is the least of our worries, since it is a long term goal to destroy Roosevelt anyways

By default cities can't revert back from civ we conquered from.

Who cares about flipping. We'll crush Roosevelt and end this war, then head over to Code of Laws and Currency to rebuild.

Sounds like a plan? Playing now. The war continues.

EDIT: Guys, should've razed Chicago! :|
EDIT2: AND BOSTON TOO!

Well, we shouldn't really have kept all of those cities. Distance maintenance is killing us.

I think we're in really bad shape from keeping a lot of cities. But never mind. Here's the plan:
1. Academy won't get us too many beakers, so scientist should settle in Mecca.
2. Gather troops for attack on Washington.
3. Stop building misc. buildings and build/whip more troops (really).

Pre-turn:
Abandon Chicago

Next turn...
Abandon Boston
Re-take and raze Chicago

... ... ...

370AD
Raze Seattle at a cost of 1 Axeman.
kk621ij5.jpg

385AD
America doesn't seem intent on re-taking Boston.
Great Scientist is up, settle 'em at Mecca (other options aren't that great, I mean Academy won't provide enough beakers, free tech is too temporary, we need long-term science especially running at 0%).

445AD
This may look bleak, but we still have more units on the way.
I'll play until I TAKE WASHINGTON!!!
Spoiler :
kk622washxy9.jpg

460AD
Lose Boston FINALLY

505AD
NOW WE'RE TALKING!
That's much better.

And after one of the bloodiest battles you've ever seen in the ancient era... think Braveheart and the hammer...

Washington, Stonehenge and Pyramids are ours!

Revolt to Representation IMMEDIATELY. (Hey, we're Spiritual, it's no big deal.)
...and our situation improves dramatically.
Spoiler :
kk626allgoodcy6.jpg

We are now running a healthy 40% science. AND we have free beakers per specialist. AND we have free happines in largest cities. Groovy!

I declare a Cease Fire with Roosevelt to save our injured units outside Washington. (Sorry, would've taken peace treaty + free techs but Roosevelt doesn't have Alphabet.)

We're looking good, let's keep it up. We can probably eliminate Roosevelt before Optics.

Here's my recommendations:
0. Move injured units inside Washington and heal up.
1. Now that we are on Representation, don't mind the science rate. Our specialists will provide our research.
2. Now the we have Stonehenge, no more building culture-producing buildings for now when we can build units!
3. Don't back down, let's build MORE units! Especially Swordsmen and Axemen. We have a couple of units remaining at Washington and Medina. Get about 8 swords and 6 axes then eventually continue where we left off. Take Philadelpha and Boston, raze Atlanta. Roosevelt should be finished off.
WARNING: Philadelphia has a wall. When we're ready, try declaring war then waiting for Roosey to send a small stack at our cities.

Let's go!

Why did you give up Boston? Wasn't that a holy city? It could have been usefull. Also there's no save.

Give up Boston? Why not?
1. It's costing us too much maintenance money. It doesn't have the shrine yet.
2. Protecting it is tying up our troops when they could be attacking somewhere else. (See: Washington)
3. We can always re-take it later. Roosevelt did not raze it.

We are going back into war later, aren't we?

Also, save is 2 posts above this one. :D

Well done on taking Washington. I didn't have all those CRII swords and I chickened out. I should have thought more about the benefits of taking it due to the wonders though. Good stuff.

Not entirely sure I agree about giving up Boston but your reasoning was sound and it has bought our economy back online.

Roster: (turnsets should be 10-15 from now on)
- Kikinit -- Took Roosey's holy city and completely sent our economy down the drain!
- Robo Kai -- Rescued the economy by taking Washington
- glenmetz -- Up
- pat4 -- on deck
- Xyqtt -- Got the army ready
- omglazers -- Repelled the barbarians

Thanks Robo for abandoning Boston. Had I gotten to declare war I would've razed that place immediately.

We're so confined on space, wasting it on a desert city that will just suck up maintenance is not something we need.

Also, have the Gems been mined? I can see the quarry is finished; not sure about the gems though.

Things look good pre-turn, the Gems south of Mecca are online

520AD-Sailing in, Science to Compass

535AD-We now have 1/2 million citizens
Mecca grows to size 7, throw a Priest in

550AD-Medina Axe->Forge (Production City and it does not have one yet)

565AD-Washington comes out of Revolt, trying to decide what the focus of the city should be. I think its a production city because the nearby hills.
Whip an axe in Damascus

580AD-Damascus Axe->Lighthouse (needs on bad for growth)
Mecca hits size 8, starts working a Grass/Hill

595AD-Mecca completes a Forge, starts working on Duct (badly needed)

610AD-New York wants to revolt, freaking New Yorkers always have to be different (what, I'm from NY, what am I saying). I don't let them.
Mecca Axe->Duct
Whip the Lighthouse in Damascus
And the Duct in Baghdad

625AD-Damascus Lighthouse->Barracks
Baghdad Duct->Axe

640AD-Baghdad Axe->Spear
Mecca hits Size 9, whip the Duct for 3 Pop

655AD-Mecca Duct->Axe

685AD-We get a border pop from Washingon
Mecca grows to 7, hire a Priest

700AD-Not much happens, and I'm all set

Played 17 turns to get our turns and date back on even numbers. Really the only sticking point here is what to do with Washington (city type) and then going back after Roosevelt. Might not be a bad idea to pick up whatever tech will let us build Trebuchets first if its only 1 tech. Can't remember what tech it is.

The Save is here folks, enjoy

Ok I got it, I'll have it back in a few hours.

Edit: I think there's a problem with the save I tried to load it and my game just shut down. I tried to load it a few times with the same effect.

Hmm... never encountered that before. You were able to play the first time around right?

Glen, try submitting another save?
(Try closing the chat/combat/event log as it does cause people without BUG Mod to crash.)
