Korea: First Impressions

That's pretty good. I'm short on the facts to add, so I'm not remarkably helpful until I do some research (look on wikipedia).

I would go: Geography (like you have), three kingdoms, unity, Sejong.
Then the stuff about China and Japan, falling to Japan, rising again in the 20th Century. Then something like: Unfortunately, Korea was once again split between factions of the Cold War. Still, Korea managed to rise once again to economic prosperity as one of the Four Asian Tigers. Today, Korea stands once again as a center for science and culture.

Then about the call to unify Korea once again.

But yours works as well. It just has the positives, not the negatives. For me, it's weird writing about cultures that didn't fall. How do they do China? I figured the final lines would be similar to that.

Somehow it feels word to introduce a leader by referring to the modern day, as the player it's just about to lead his people from 4000bc onwards...

They do talk about modern countries' histories even for leaders not alive at the time (i.e. Washington intro). I feel there'd be a place to mention modern Korea, I'm just not sure where. In the very least they should mention the Three Kingdoms (I didn't), and traits of the Korean land and people (as they do for nearly every other civ), and maybe list some accomplishments of that civ.

The reason I'd want to mention modern accomplishments is I think they're pretty good. I guarantee you'd find something modern in America, China, or India. I just forget how they transition.

here's what they have for america:

Welcome President Washington! You lead the industrious American civilization! Formed in the conflagration of revolution in the 18th century, within a hundred years, the young nation became embroiled in a terrible civil war that nearly tore the country apart, but it was just a few short years later in the 20th century that the United States reached the height of its power, emerging triumphant and mighty from the two terrible wars that destroyed so many other great nations. The United States is a nation of immigrants, filled with optimism and determination. They lack only a leader to help them fulfill their promise.
President Washington, can you lead the American people to greatness? Can you build a civilization that will stand the test of time?

A special spacebattleship korean origin you would need to when its time to go outer earth

Turtle Space Ironcladder with Dragonhead you have there in Gobukseon

well I finished my Korea game. OCC, immortal, large, normal speed, pangea. Won via culture around turn 330 but was extremely close...spaceship parts were going up all over the place and I got nuked with 2 turns left...huge armies were closing in, I probably couldn't have lasted 10 more turns. Had zero strategic resources and no marble either, those were the main challenges. 4 luxuries tho so I had enough gold for constant RAs.

build order was scout, scout, worker, mausoleum, purchase worker, purchase stone works (had 2), great library, archer, hanging gardens, national college, oracle, HS, PT. The tech boosts from GL & NC were instrumental in getting me to education.

Polices were tradition (aristocracy, oligarchy, legalism, monarchy, landed elite) commerce opener, Piety (close out), Freedom (close out), Commerce (close out), Honor.

Settled all my great artists & scientists since I was beelining Freedom. Had 5 academies and 7 landmarks at the end. Also 1 customs house. A couple engineers were used on PT and Sydney Opera House. At the end (before the nuke) Seoul was producing about 330 beakers, 75 gold, and 500 culture.

One of my scouts turned into an archer and defended myself with the 2 archers and starting warrior. Was repeatedly invaded & backstabbed by all the nearby civs and had to fight them off with ranged units pretty much all game. 4 or 5 RAs got cancelled by backstabbers but managed to get enough to hit acoustics, archaeology, radio early. City was coastal so bulbed mass media for Sydney House. Then just tried to hold on defense until I finished. At one point I had to sign a peace deal giving away all my gold & gpt or would have been crushed. That was while i was researching artillery. Once upgraded they were effective for quite a long time, until helipcopters & rocket artillery started coming at me. There was zero aluminum around for me so no rocket artillery for me...this was almost my downfall. There was an aluminum mine near me that I tried to culture bomb but my guy was 2 turns late in getting to the right tile...

Anyways thats enough storytelling. What I noticed about the Koreans:

- the tech boost from building science stuff in the capital seems strong, maybe equivalent to an RA? Anyway it was noticeable, I was able to stay slightly ahead of the AI all game with only the 1 city and no rationalism. It definitely helped get to education a good deal faster.
- porcelain tower doesn't seem to count for this bonus, but great library, national college, and Oxford all do. I couldn't tell if the free library bestowed by the GL did anything or not.
- +2 science on GPP improvements IS doubled with Freedom finisher. Academy = 16 science
- the new wonders were built very early. They were the first 3 off the board...I built mausoleum and the AIs built the other 2, way before GL was built. Could be good distractions for the AI.
- Mausoleum really comes in handy for this victory type. Added enough gold for 3-4 RAs over the course of the game. Early extra gold on stone combined with stoneworks makes for some very powerful tiles. Dunno if it was necessary for me to build it before the GL, but it worked out for me ok.
- Hwacha is a lifesaver in this exact circumstance. No resources and very effective anti-personnel ranged weapon.
- Turtle ship also had its uses. On the edge of a Pangea is pretty much the perfect spot for Korea.

All in all Korea was very well suited for this victory type and particular map. I think they are probably 1st tier with the science bonuses. If I can keep up on immortal with 1 city and no rationalism, that's saying something. I think a 3-4 city tall empire with strong specialist economy would be a real powerhouse.

I think a 3-4 city tall empire with strong specialist economy would be a real powerhouse.

I think I've played the perfect game with Korea (standart settings, continents, emperor).

Screenshots tell more than a 1000 words :)

1st) I managed to get Electronics (mech infantry) on turn 173 (year 1130AD, look at the production queue)
2nd) 2 turns later I opened the Militarism social policy so I could rush-buy a few mechinfs for ~700 :c5gold:
3rd) I still had my oxford university (two free techs because of korean tech boost) and two additional free techs from Scientific Revolution -> Lasers on turn 189 :)
4th) Domination victory on turn 220, sniping capitals in one turn with modern armor :D

I only built three cities and didn't attack anyone before mechinf.

Buildorder:
Scout -> Worker -> Granary -> Settler -> Temple of Artemis -> Library (tech boost to Mathematics) -> Hanging Gardens -> Settler -> Mausoleum of Halicarnassus -> National College -> Hagia Sophia -> Porcelain Tower with engie -> Academy

Buildorder in 2nd and 3rd city:
Library -> Granary (and quick water mill to fully "exploit" the TOA)

The delayed library gave me a decent boost to mathematics and oh boy, temple of artemis + landed elite + tradition finisher + hanging gardens is just insane.

After mathematics I teched my way to education and built universities, temples, markets and workshops for all the specialist slots.

With all those specialists, my tech rate was much faster than with any other civ and my cities still grew. Thanks to tradition finisher + TOA. Signing RAs did the rest.

Best Civ in the game :goodjob:

Turtle ships have utility in war. Because of their insanely high strength they can sit outside a city and bombard away for a long time. Get 2-3 of them and coastal cities will be candy. They are certainly nothing game changing and only situational, but they aren't worthless.

Hwatcha's are nice. People also forget that the city bombard promotion returns them to a 24 vs cities and catching them up a bit with Trebuchets.

The UA is fun.
