I watched Return of the Jedi this afternoon and the general cloak-and-dagger-recycled-IN-SPACE feeling (plus some cowboy stuff and bike chases and an evil high priest) was better than the prequels' attempts at explaining everything.

To understand the true meaning of Jar-Jar in episode I, you have to see through a couple of levels, to the true foundation of Star Wars. It's really remade old westerns with a layer of sci fi on top, with a layer of cutesy kid stuff on top of that to appeal to the children and grandchildren of fans of the original, which itself was sci fi layered on top of an old western in the first place. Jar-Jar's role is, of course, an upgraded version of an oldie but goodie.
