[NFP] Kublai Khan Discussion Thread

I actually feel cautiously excited. The ability is solid, "boring" or not, as most people keep an econ card in a wildcard slot when possible. For a leader playing as either a builder or warmonger, having trade benefits is a nice touch that can be useful. I think I prefer Kublai over Ghengis, though he is weaker and more general than Qin (which I don’t mind as I'm not much of a wonder builder, and it's okay for civs to be weaker than average).

Chinese Kublai isn't THAT bad...

I feel it relies too much on randomness and this lack of control isn't particularly engaging.

If he could somehow mark techs/civics as what he wants to get inspirations/eurekas on that would help a lot.

I only now noticed this comment. THAT would be fun, since it would be an entirely unique mechanic. I would have no qualms with the ability as it stands atm if it did this.

Forgive my harsh words, however - reusing a code that long existed in the game (Edit: Well no, that code was specifically for him) plus an extra policy card slot which already happened in several civs, a wonder, and a gamemode. That's okay-level strong, but very, very boring.

I am a bit disappointed by the lack of creativity and variety in Kublai's tool kit, especially compare to other NFP civs. His entire ability is centered around trade routes - but with a possibly underwhelming bonus and no way to get more trade routes easily.

Kublai's ability can synergize with Mongol and China CUA, yes, but only an okay synergy, far from being well-synergized. And not to say that China without extra builder charge and wonder rush is already fairly underwhelming.

Not every leader needs to be tailored to a very specific playstyle and victory condition.
I’m fine with another balanced and adaptable leader, as we have had plenty of specialists recently.
Me too, although I wish the Eurekas and Inspirations gained from Trade Routes were increased to at least two of each. You could then get... at least 24 Eurekas and Inspirations.

I feel like this should go in the Vietnam discussion thread, but it did come from Kublai Khan's first look video, so I'll put it here:

We can see that Vietnam has founded Taoism and is converting China to it from Confucianism. They also had Korea and Japan both as Buddhists so this indicates to me that Taoism's going to be Lady Trieu's preferred religion.

Hm, maybe it could be every other trade post established in a single Civ? Maybe every other 3? Maybe every 3rd or 4th trade post established across all Civs instead of just one? Change depending on map size? Idk, I’m still excited to play him though, just wondering if it’s not enough.

Nothing was reused. The effect for Kublai was added to the dll with the first NFP patch (probably because Kublai was already complete or something similar). It was never used in the game or actually added to the database. The only reason anyone knew about it is because someone crawled through the dll. This is completely normal. The Teddy Persona effect for city state envoys and trade routes was also found as well as numerous others.

By this logic, the tables used for the Economy game mode that are coming up with this patch, which were loaded into the game database with a previous patch in preparation for this release, would also constitute “reusing” something ;)

Just watched Saxygamer's video and he brought up a good point... how is Mongolia Kublai better than China Kublai again? It isn't like Mongolia Kublia is bringing extra domination power over Mongolia ability. ..

My impression is the intent is to have flexible civ that is a middle ground for both Mongolia and China.

Thank you for pointing that out. I don't remember the original code exactly, if possible, can you tell if that code can allow Eureka and Inspiration bonus triggered when sending a trade route to a City State?
