After the war a plague spread to Russia from England in 1835. Catherine also caught it and died later that year. After her death she was announced Catherine the Great. The throne passed on to Nicholas I. The plague wasn't as deadly as was first fiered, only around million Russians lost their lives because of it.
Nicholas continued Catherine's work of building up the great Empire. He also traded new inventions from the loyal Malinese peoples. A new corporation system was also copied from the Ottomans.
Spoiler:
In case you were wondering how the espionage points are adding up:
And some other statistics, because I remembered to take a screenshot:
In 1852 the occupied German state of Berlin rebelled against the Kingdom of Spain and expelled their garrisons. The rebellion quickly spread to Warsaw, whose governor decided to join the new Kingdom of Germany. The Russian garrison was expelled by an outraging mob.
Nicholas I didn't take the rebellion lightly, as soon as the first news of it reached him, he ordered the Imperial Cavalry Platoons to retake Warsaw at any cost. The Russian army arrived in Poland just cuople months later. They joined forces with the expelled garrison of Polish Riflemen.
The commander of the Polish Riflemen informed the Russian Field Marshal Mikhail Kutuzov that Warsaw was defended by weak German Militia. The Field Marshal wasted no time and ordered an attack against the city. The battle quick and ruthless. The 5th European Platoon wasn't able to break through the defences, but when the legendary 2th European Platoon accompanied with the Polish Riflemen charged against the city the German Militia was easily crushed.
Mikhail Kutuzov received new orders from Nicholas I. He ordered the Cavalry to strike against Berlin. Kutuzov gathered most of his elite forces together rode quickly towards Berlin. The city was also defended by German Militia. These were better equipped troops than the ones slaughtered in Poland, but Kutuzov knew that they couldn't match the powers of the 1st European Platoon, 1st Siberian Platoon and 1st Novski Horsemen combined. He rode straight against the stunned German forces.
The battle was fierce and the 1st European Platoon was almost cmpletely destroyed. Nontheless 1st Siberian Platoon and the 1st Novski Horsemen managed to break through the defences and claim the city in the name of the Emperor. The German Rebel was decisively suppressed and Nicholas attached Germany to his Empire.
I'm going to go ahead and say the obvious: the German area is going to be a lot of trouble. Watch out for your stability, I've had last second civil wars ruin a game for me.
Wow... I have never ramped up so much espionage... are you concentrating solely on Turkey or are you putting some spies to other nations as well?
I am VERY impressed how you've been able to keep you stability this high! I mean even in your Japanese game I've never been able to keep a empire that large AND keep it stable!
@Kullervo: It is true that Germany will give me some trouble, but I'll soon get Radio and Cristo Redentor, which will eventually lead to me being able to change civics. And that's going to improve my stability a lot!
@Kullervo/west india man: I did concentrate all my espionage towards Turkey, but after they collapsed (gladly I just got Corporation from them) I switched it a part of it towards France and the rest against Spain. Note that Spain is gunning for Biology, which I definetly want ASAP. Though I'll also need fascism (I need AL first) from France. Both are techs that I can't go for right now, actually I am incredibly lucky that Spain went for Biology and France for Fascism so early. Even more luckily (though I was running 4 spies to get it) I spawned a great spy while back. I left it in Moskva just in case I need later.
@Stewie: My stability has been slightly above zero after I took Mongolia, so no real problems there, at least yet. To maintain a big empire you'll have to move slowly in terms of new acquisitions. However, my stability will soon improve greatly as I will get biology, levees, and the five star civic combo. After that I can conquer new territories.
Constantinople and Athens would have been very useful early on, but not so much now (since you have steam power and know SM already). In fact a respawned Greece might be a good vassal.

A new World Congress was held in Vasa in 1866. This time all participants were eager to be more civilized than the last time. China still wanted Vladivostok from Russia, but the motion was dismissed. Russia on the hand didn't get Toyohara from Japan.
After the congress United States offered to vassalize under Russia, if Russia would declare war on France and Spain. This European alliance had been fighting against the United States from the day it declared independence from England. However, Nicholas didn't want to participate in this war.
The Frankish Empire had been very displeased by the Russian conquest of Berlin. They held it as a hostile act towards France. Therefore in 1872 they finally declared war on Russia in order to take Berlin for themselves.
Napolean had already sent Cavalry regiments from Italy towards Budapest, but the 1st European Platoon that was based in Budapest easily defeated the advancing French Cavalry.
However, the war created enough chaos in the divided Italy that Russia could exploit it. Russian spies were sent to Venice and Reggia to steal the new Frankish and Spanish inventions.
Spoiler:
Tech situation after stealing Biology and Steam Power:
France also sent an Infantry Battallion against Berlin, but the 5th European Platoon defeated them. Nicholas and his generals assumed that france real intentions laid elsewhere as they didn't seem to be interested in committing enough forces for an attack against Berlin. This phony war was ended in 1880, as neither side was willing to risk open war.
Spoiler:
Stability is rising, because of the GA and Biology:
You know, I used to aim for Radio first, but nowadays I usually go for AL first because of the production benefits (building CR in 10 turns in my Ironworks+factory+coal plant city rather than 20+ turns). Also you can devote more hammers to gold so it actually speeds up your research even more.
I really don't know why the AI values Steel so much (yes it gives ironclads but so what). By the time you get to Railroad and Chunnel your science probably won't benefit from it as much as if you got AL first.

It has always been a three way race between Medicine, AL and Radio. Nowadays I usually take Radio first if there is a risk that somebody else beats me to it. That's the case in this game, with big empires you just can't risk losing CR. Otherwise I also take AL first and then Radio. I might also take AL, if I really needed infantry, which is rare though. Although, if I am way ahead in tech, I have no imminent threats and I know there will be a plague in the next 20-30 turns, I might go for Biology/Medicine first.
Also I went for steel, because I knew that I am going to steal Biology and Steam Power, so I didn't have anything else to research.
BTW, ironclads together with machine guns are probably the most useless units in the game.
I thought about it, I would've persuaded Spain to make peace and then vassalised. But in the end I don't really need them and the extra costs. Having too many vassals cripples your research.
In 1882 Alexander II formed an important foreign defence pact with China. This pact meant that all of Asia, excluding Middle East, nearly half of Europe and Mali would unite in face of common threat. Other world powers were shocked by these news, which made an attack against Russia or China close to a suicide.
Alexander also invested on making new aviation regulations and sent airships around the world to map the uncharted regions of the world.
Spoiler:
And some statistics from 1824.
No worries about domination victory, yet.
In 1892 Alexander ordered his Cavalry Platoons to cross the border and enter Kazakstan. He wanted attach the unstable and scattered Kazakstan area into his vast Empire.
The city of Samarkant fell almost instantly as it's under equipped militia didn't have a change against the veteran Cossacks.
Alexander made also new deals with Spain and continued to copy and apply France's new technologies, tough this time his spies were captured and executed. Napoleon was furious.
In 1900 Alexander completed a great monument to celebrate the new century. Alexander passed away later that year and the crown of Russia moved on to his son Nicholas II.
Yes, I think that Nicholas II is a perfect candidate for that.
And yes, of course recreated USSR has to be called USSR and Sankt-Peterburg Leningrad in the game too. (Well that and it is a great stability boost too)
