Sorry if this has been discussed before, but I used search and didnt see my specific question. Is there a coded limit of map size no larger than 169X121? Ive tried the bigger worlds mod and the unofficial world builder. With some testing of changing the height and width I cant load a larger size than the 169X121. The unofficial world builder has slider up to 256X128, but does that only work for 8 gigs of ram? I have 4 gig and windows 7 64 bit and get an exception dump. Thanks

This isn't exactly solving your problem (sorry), but out of interest what do you want a large size for?

Because of the way area of maps works, area grows a LOT after only a few more hexes per side are added. For instance, a 140x90 map is a TON bigger than a 128x80 map.

Personally I couldn't imagine playing on a map much larger than 150x128.

Curiosity mainly. I know 166X118 is huge, but wondered if you could get a wider map to work. I usually played civ4 on the really big maps, just a preference.

184x96 is the max I was able to play with. I'm going to release a giant earth, it runs without crash on my PC so far, but I don't know how it will perform on other PC...

With a little experimenting, I was able to play with maps of 180X80 and 168X120. I would be curious if any one else could try these sizes and see if they work on their PCs. The 184X96 size didnt work on mine.

hmmm, in fact it was 180x96 or 182x96, sorry :D

184 was crashing.

Ok. The 182X96 size worked on mine as well. I just tried to load it and play a few turns with these sizes, so dont know how slow they would be mid or late game. But we do know some custom sizes that work. :)

With seemingly 1 to 3 hex count difference on different sizes, are we hitting a definite
'maximum' x and y dimension of a map? I know that the map generators use plate tectonic etc in some of the scripts, is that causing some sizes to fail?
