The Drengin Digest for February was published and it gives a bit of news related to the upcoming Gal Civ expansion, Twilight of the Arnor.

Galactic Civilizations II: Twilight of the Arnor is being worked on heavily. This week we started implementing a new feature that allows players to have the AI design ships for them. So for new players in particular who just want a decently designed ship, they can now get it with this new option.

Obviously the AI is going to be a major element of what we start working on. Beta 5, which is due out later this month to those who have pre-ordered it, will be the first beta with significant AI enhancements. It will also have a host of other tweaks based on increased internal play testing.

Well, just in case anyone wants an update:

Twilight of the Arnor is sheduled to be released in earlyish April. Beta5 will be coming soon as mentioned above, but the latest beta, 0.96a.006 (4C) was released on the 19th. It doesn't contain all the much, some AI tweaks and bug fixes. Beta 5, as posted, will have more AI updates than the previous few updates.

The last few updates have been slow because the guys at the office had been concentrating on getting Sins of a Solar Empire ready and released, as well as Stardock's newest game. With Sins well on it's way to becoming a smash hit, the focus has returned on finishing up Twilight and getting out the last few betas.

If anyone has any questions, feel free to ask :).

I have a question.

GalCiv2 runs a bit slow on my nearly four year old laptop (which is understandable). I heard that the new expansion contains a rework of the game-engine and that everything should run smoother and use less resources. Can I expect that the game will run better on my old laptop with the new expansion?

Twilight uses vastly less resources than Dark Avatar or Dread Lords, it's the most optimized version yet. However, there is no garantee that it will run better on your specific hardware. However, barring any unusual circumstances, i would say that you *should* expect to see it perform better, and use less memory than the previous versions of the game.
