Learning a Language

If you're trying to learn a language "for profit" I'd say go with Chinese. Everybody is flipping out lately over what a huge economic power china is becoming, and most Chinese don't speak a lick of English.
I think i've read somewhere that there is more Chinese understanding English than English speaking countries knowing Chinese.

I would like to learn latin, remember german, remember italian, and learn arabic. (in this order:))
No french for me, thank you. :p

you should learn italian. it seems like a cool language, and from what I have heard, its similar to spanish and french (romance languages), so once you learn it, the other 2 should be easier. I guess, learning any of the 3 would have the same result.
I agree with Steph that you can only speak it in Italy, but it's (IMO) the most beautiful language of the world.

I have never seen the whole world, but I agree Italian is nice to the ears.

I don't know, it depends on what you want to do I guess.

But I am learning Japanese for my move there :).

I think Mandarin is the way to go. It uses a rather different part of the brain (meaning it will help increase your mental health), and there are a lot of people who speak it. Finally, Mandarin is destined to become more powerful economically.

Really? A different part of the brain? Could you elaborate a bit, or give me a link? That sounds interesting. :)

So instead of debating on what languages would be the best to learn for whatever reason, what are the ways one could learn it quickly but accurately?

This would be useful to me. I think I'm the only person in my Russian class that did not know any part of the language (mostly spoken, it seems that there were fluent speakers, but were illiterate in the language) before starting the course.

Aside from (obviously) simply studying the language, I think that the only supplement really would be to try to immerse yourself in it. Reading children's books in the language can be useful until you become more advanced.

Okay. This has been interesting.

In terms of what I want to get out of it, I would like the knowledge, because I think it's cool to be able to converse in other languages, when I get married and have kids I'd like to know a language with my wife and get my kid(s) tutored on another so we could have our own language to communicate in.

Also, you know when you go to a friend's house that speaks Spanish and you don't get any of it? And then they start yelling and you hear your name thrown in and they look at you for a sec? It's really awkward. I'd like to have my own language to talk in that guests wouldn't understand.

Also, I might join the Navy. What are some of the main countries they go to. Do they go to Mexico, Central America, South America, or Spain much?
Besides German and Russia (if those are some), what are some main countries you might go to for a while if you joined the Navy?
