Least Flexible Leader

Surely Julius Caesar is the least flexible leader. When you start a game as him you HAVE to attack, attack, attack with praetorians. (Well you dont have to but whats the point of being Rome then?)

Watch ppl disagree with me.... ;)

Funny, I would normally not disagree but my BTS win with him I actually got a cultural win!!! It was me and Tokugawa on a continent, I cut him off early (thankyou Snaaty), limited him to 2 cities, then kicked him off with Prats. He still had 2 cities off shore but I had an entire continent to myself. Essentially was an isolated start sinc ethe AIs could not reach me to meet since Toku did not open borders  . Long story, shortened I turlted up, settled and built up the civilization. BY the time I met the other AIs, they were involved in religious wars, I terrorized them with privateers but kept teching and eventually set for the culture win while I was very far ahead in tech (faster than space). The thing that really did it, is I could afford a large empire in isolation and did well in science because of the organized trait.

ummmm, I Disagree with you

Caesar is inflexible in a different way as most people seem to imply. Unlike pure warmongers like Tokugawa he doesn't necessarily need someone to trounce, he just needs land. Whether he takes it with Praetorians or REXes on his own power (which he is very very good at), he can get a decent-sized empire if he has the space.

I generally agree that the heavy-duty warmonger traits are inflexible: Peacetime traits are still useful for war (Spiritual means you can win wars you weren't prepared for and gets your economy out of the gutter more quickly. Philosphy is beneficial for a specialist-heavy economy that is less prone to pillaging and war weariness).

Industrial and Financial seem like inflexible peacemonger traits, but they are powerful enough to be turned into an overwhelming military. Their problem with military use is that they work best when you have some breathing space: If things go pear-shaped, they won't dig you out of a hole.

The others usually have less specialised benefits and lend themselves to many different playstyles, apart from Creative which I always have to adjust for.

One thing that mostly fell under table is the difference in the Unique Units: Free promotions carry over, so I don't feel cheated if I don't wage major wars with my UU if something gets to stick.

Joao and Mao are both awesome. They and Hauyna have the fastest starts in the game.

Joao gets a discount on his settlers AND workers, and starts with Mining. He is the fastest Axe rush in the game, and then he backs it up with tons of Great Generals.

Mao combines the cheap Granneries and Workers from Expansive with China's best starting techs in the game only civ that starts with both Agriculture and Mining. He is at least twice as strong as Qin, and Qin is no General Tso's chicken. On higher AI levels he is even more overpowering since the AIs automatically get Hunting and Archery as well.

I'd probably go with one of the Protective leaders as least flexible, Sitting Bull and Toku come to mind. You don't have too many options with Protective since you need to beeline to Feudalism/ Rifling ASAP. The leader that's Protective Organized, is it Hannurabbi or Charlemagne? would be there as well.

Cheers,

Dai

There isn't an Org/Pro leader; it's one of the three missing combos (Org/Pro, Cha/Cre, Ind/Phi).

Hammurabi is Agg/Org, a solid combo for warfare and holding onto your gains, and Charlemagne has the Imp/Pro combo, which is not to my liking.

Protective leaders, I've found, can also do well with a Metal Casting slingshot or an otherwise early focus on Machinery so they can use crossbows. I've had a lot of success with the crossbow early in the game...sometimes, I'll go for Machinery way before Feudalism just for the upgraded archer unit.
