Legacy of Civilization

Alas, the city of Honac, upon the island of Rosalew, surrounded by the River Asthens (Bunrun in the Sumrum tongue)

The bulk of the population live on the island itself, the river acting as natural barriers to the roaming tribesmen who have yet to find civilization. The island is roughly divided into 5 districts that seamlessly blend into one another to form a cohesive whole.

Chamin District
Home to the apartments of the Chamin, the priestly district is among the cleanest and well-cared for of the city. Regular bands of carpenters and servants scour the streets and alleys to chase away pests and clean waste. The district is also the cite of the Gates of the Chanted Light, gateway to the Gardens of Hornac that occupy the northern portion of the island. The manicured gardens provide a great service for the Chamin, who spend most of their day contemplating the gods in the solitude of nature.

The Chamin District is technically also home to the Great Temple of Onsalum, which is undergoing construction and is set to become of the largest structures known to man. This structure is more than just the temple to Onsalum and the headquarters of the Chamin, it is also the last refuge for those who are unable to escape a sudden flood of the river. Its high altitude and broad levels are well suited to hold thousands of people in the event of a catastrophe. It is really the centerpiece of Honacian culture.

The Sacred Gardens, a walled-off and perhaps the most sacred of Honacian places, is off-limits to all but the High Malificum, leader of the Chamin and communicator to Onsalum. She spends most of her days tending to the gardens here, secluded from the normal population. The gardens themselves are located on the highest point of the island, only susceptible to the greatest of floods.

The Royal District

Tucked behind the Great Temple, the Royal District is sparsely populated and home to just the monarchy and their royal court and ministers. Rarely visited though nicely maintained, the Royal District is often avoided by most for its unusual laws regarding speech and loitering.

Commercial District

The bulk of the commercial district is made up of granaries where surplus food is stored for safe keeping and the stores of food for the city is often held. The open area of the Central Market is often the cite for numerous commercial dealings, mostly with Surnamian merchants. It is often the cite where the Monarch or Chamin address the people of Honac. The official harbor and piers are also located here, though most of the perimeter of the island remain open for easy loading.

The People District

Home to the better-off craftsmen of Honac, the People District is often riddled with violence and pest outbreaks. Though density remains lower than most of the city, waste usually relies on the occasional flood to be cleaned out of the streets. The small apartments and huts that characterize this area are usually made of poor quality stone or wood, and most are constantly rebuilt due to poor maintenance and know-how. The district is near to the commercial stores, though, and benefits from commerce and easy access to food and clean water.

The Rest

The southern portion of the island and the city within the walls on the north bank are usually referred to as "The Rest." This land usually consists of sparse huts made for single families. Makeshift shrines to the minor gods are major attractions in these parts, attracting the attention of the rest of the population. Farmers who prefer to live within the city walls make up this population, the largest segment of the city.

Update 1: Years 26-50

The queendom of Aagödia has begun to truly prosper in recent years, recovering from the plagues of vermin which until recently hindered development. Recent flooding along the river has led to increased prosperity and development of the society, as a greater surplus of foods than ever before has been secured over the past twenty-five years. The clever people of the city have devised cunning ways to trap and ensnare the rates who bothered the farmers and have thus gained growing influence in society from their ingenuity. Needless to say, the growing city population and the influence of the residents there have grated upon the farmers who have had resentment begin to grow. The recent development of a standing armed guard has also assisted in the development of the Aagödian nation, as the new warriors pledge allegiance to the Nobility. New lands have been opened in the south, further pleasing the crafters of the nation, as new sources of Clay have been acquired for production purposes.

Under pressure from attack by slavers, the city state of Drellen has been formed along the Plavant River. Consisting of those fleeing from attack by Klaplant enslavers, various tribes and nomads have taken refuge near the fork of the Plavant. The Drellen culture is a very haphazard one, as the variety of societies, some even speaking different languages and worshipping different gods, occasionally fail to click together. The nobility who theoretically rule the city, must still pay respects to the city dwellers who possess the true power, and run the levies which defend Drellen from attack. The farmers of the region view the city with wariness, concerned that the community could pose just as much of a threat to them as the marauders from the west.

Honacia has continued to expand their capital of Honac, which is a growing testament to the gods and man. Honacia has also been part of the first signs of international trade among civilizations in this early period of history with the Surmum nation, as stone and goods have been transported down the Bunrun River for use in local construction. In exchange, large amounts of grains and other foods have been sent upriver to help feed the populations of Hondallab and Ludallab. The stones have been strictly used in the beginning of the construction of a truly massive Temple to the god Onsalum. The temple is designed not only for worship, but to protect the denizens of the Honac Island from flooding. This has correspondingly given the Chamin ever greater political influence among the population, as they praise them for providing for their physical safety.

Klaplant, in a search for a larger workforce, has developed a new method of labor for the population, the first in the Keralian Sea region. Levied warriors of Plen have begun kidnapping people from other towns and tribes which have made their homes along the Plavant River. If you are not a citizen of the city of Plen or an associated farmer, you may quickly find yourself brought in chains back to the capital for sale. The new method of labor has risen some ire among the populace at home, as well as among those taken for enslavement. At a fork where the Plavant River divides, the new city state of Drellen has emerged as local tribes and communities band together to defend themselves from Klaplant slavers. At home, both farmers and city craftsmen alike have begun to view slavery with some unease, believing that if it could happen to others, it could happen to them as well.

The nation of Korala has been beset by a period of weakened food production and a smaller surplus than expected. The city of Kayyatek continues to swell as the population proceeds to grow at a steady, if reduced, rate. The Upper Class of Kayyatek have recently begun to achieve greater standing within the community, as the first band of organized warriors were assembled to assist in protecting the region from bandits and pledged allegiance to the nation's rulers. The rise of the warriors and the decline in production have begun to give cause to the farmers of Korala for concern towards the government. Many have begun to fear that perhaps the gods have begun to withdraw their support from the ruling regime.

The island of Neek can only recently be counted among the civilized regions of the Keralian Sea region. Neek has developed a fledgling city, forming a unique island culture and society highly mistrustful of others. The Neek have truly been able to prosper over recent years with the introduction of organized agriculture to the island, irrigating and exploiting the local waters to provide resources. An Oligarchy of the wealthy land owners has formed to rule the people and much of the political influence upon the island rests with them. The status quo has begun to change, however, with the introduction of a new class of city dwellers within Neek, those who do not toil the land for wealthier individuals.

Upon the banks of the Rhend River, the new civilization of Ruhin has emerged over recent years. Celebrating self-appeasement and arrogance, it seems almost a miracle that such a nation even exists in the first place. They believe greatly in individual freedom for the people in service for the overall civilization and gods. The clan-based society has provided a new measure of stability to the southeastern part of the Keralian Sea region, and security for its people.

The kingdom of Surmum, the strongest nation in the Keralian Sea area, has further increased its strength this year. Another community nestled in the base of the Gilasha Mountains, Gedallab, has been brought into the realm of the larger kingdom. Gedallab has had a large population of Eannumites, and they have brought their strength and local gem harvesting to that faction within larger Surmum. The Karubites have in response looked upon the newcomers with some unease, feeling more outnumbered between the Honacian people of Hondallab and the growing numbers of Eannumites. The population in Hondallab is also increasingly uncomfortable with the government of Surmum, finding more in common with the gods and people of Honacia further down the river. The connection with Honacia has grown as Surmum has become a part of the first international trade route along the Bunrun River. Surmum's Nobility have gained some strength as late with the training of the world's first archers, an organized warrior element of Surmum society.

Sylvania has entered some troubled times as of late. While expansion has continued to the east along the river, the total population growth has slowed as less food is being harvested from the countryside. The Fathers have been called into doubt by the people, as the Sons have recently begun to view the government with wariness. Rabble rousers have been preaching against the divinity of the views of the Fathers and this has greatly caused disturbances among the more ignorant population.

The Tau-Ren civilization have begun to possibly even surpass the "more civilized" Tau in the north, with a larger population and food surplus. This year has seen record production for the farmers of the Tau-Ren and this has increased independent thought among those people. They have been increasingly irritated by the growing population of Thunbloof, as the city dwellers become increasingly prosperous by newly discovered wealth from recently acquired marble sources. The Nobility's effort to levy warriors for the defense of the community has also grown ire from the farmers, many of whom fielded the people for the new levies.

OOC Notes

A larger territory will not by itself increase the power of the nation. Empty fertile land may as well be desert. I just feel to point out that a rapidly expanding nation may find itself under considerable strain with not enough people, or people too spread out to be effective. For civilization players: Think Civ4, not Civ3.

As a note, I have adjusted the default strength to None for the moment for all classes.

Remember, the quicker orders are in, the quicker the updates come! Ya'll mostly don't need to do much diplomacy, so keep it quick for these early stages! :)

Very nice update :)
Description of Kayyatek:

Guide to the City of Kayyatek
~~~~~~~~~
The City of Kayyatek is situated on the south side of the River Kooyyr. The main areas in the city are the Imperial Palace, in which the King resided in, the Hooyr Park, the Market District, the harbor, and the temple district.
Ch. I
The Imperial palace
The Great King of our nation lives in this Elegant White Marble Building, it is patrolled by the Royal Guard, a force devoted to protecting his highness. The Imperial Palace has over 100 rooms. A large ball room, many guest rooms. On the outside is the Imperial Gardens, which include many species of rare plants and beautiful flowers of every kind and color. The Gardens also include many fountains which have the calming sound of sprinkling water but also double as a refreshing place to get water for the King and his Guests.
Ch. II
The Hooyr Park/I]
The Hooyr Park is much like the Imperial Gardens but on a much less elegant scale, with only 3 fountains in the park and less exotic plants, it is mainly a place for people to take a leisurely stroll, or just hang out and watch the world go by. It is a pretty fairly sized park of 15 acres. The park also includes 2 pretty good sized ponds. With many paths winding through its trees and flowers, it is a must see if you are visiting the city!
Ch. III
The Market District
If you want to buy anything visit this part of the city! It has many kinds of shops from Blacksmiths to Masons, to General Goods Stores. But be ready to spend a coin or two. Many merchants also live here atop their shops, there are also a few inns to stay at if you out of town, such as the Garden Inn (15 Coins a night) or the Merchant's Inn (10 Coins a Night).
Ch. IV
The Temple District
This is where all people come to worship, there are temples to almost every god, some of the notable ones include, The Temple of Riiya, Kooyra and Leera. But there are temples to many others too, The City Council has begun construction of a great temple dedicated to all the gods, called The Great Temple (Wonder). It is being constructed out of Limestone and will have many rooms devouted to worship. If you get a chance to come to this part of the city (Everyone should or the gods will look down apon you!) you should spend at least a few hours showing you love for the Gods and Goddesses. There are also a few Inns here as well.
Aagödia orders sent!
Well, the scheduled deadline is on the front page, as long as it is in by then, you're all good.
In general, if all orders are sent in tonight, we may once more be able to do an early update.
Birtumur looked at his teacher and chanted:
Nan reigned for 5000 years in Eanna and wedded Unu in Ludallab,
Nan'shur reigned for 100 years in Ludallab,
Nan'kigal reigned for 20 years in Ludallab,
Nan'shun reigned for 40 years in Ludallab,
Nan'bilnin reigned for 9 years in Ludallab,
Nan'luldun reigned for 33 years in Ludallab,
Nan'shubad reigned for 17 years in Ludallab,
Nan'shibarta reigned for 23 years in Ludallab,
Nan'shibirtut reigned for 8 years in Ludallab,
Nan'shimmun reigned for 12 years in Ludallab,
Nan'eballa reigns in Ludallab.
This is very good, En'Birtumur. Now tell me the names of the God, will you?
But this is harder. There are more of them. I ...
Would you like to be forgotten when you are dead, my prince? Do you think the God would like you, among all the folk of Surmum, to forget His name?
Sigh... No, teacher. You are right. I know the names. Listen:
The child stood upright, and sang a monotonous song:
Unu reigned for 5000 years in Kurab and wedded Nan in Ludallab,
Unu'egal reigned for 100 years in Ludallab,
Unu'mirritur reigned for 20 years in Ludallab,
Unu'langal reigned for 30 years in Ludallab,
Unu'bandar reigned for 12 years in Ludallab,
Unu'lesh reigned for 44 years in Ludallab,
Unu'timrit reigned for 7 years in Ludallab,
Unu'roshar reigned for 9 years in Ludallab,
Unu'ru reigned for 4 years in Ludallab,
Unu'ru reigned for 14 years in Ludallab,
Unu'tana reigned for 21 years in Ludallab,
Unu'merkenkar reigns in Ludallab.
That's very well, En'Birtumur. But You repeated Unu'ru twice. Who reigned before Unu'ru?
It was... He only reigned four years!
Who reigned before Unu'ru?
It was... I know. It was Unu'shebal! See, teacher. I know it!
I didn't doubt you knew, my prince. I am sure Unu'merkenkar will be glad when I tell Him you know the Lists. Now can you explain me who will be the next Unu' and Nan', and why it must be so?
I will be the next Unu', because I am the son of Nan'eballa and En'meshkar, and because my father died of a wound which didn't want to be healed. And Nin'sharna will be the next Nan', because she is the daughter of Unu'merkenkar and Nin'shubur.
What if Nan'eballa dies before Unu'merkenkar?
Why? Grandfather is older than her, and father died already. This should not happen.
En'Birtumur, the Goddess may want to remain young. You don't know what she will decide. I certainly do not. But I know what should happen then, and the Queen ordered me to teach you because she wants you to know. So tell me, what would happen?
It's too hard to learn all that by heart, teacher. Why can't I just ask you when I need it since you know it?
You are very clever, my prince. A king can ask his counselors, and certainly he should do so. But what if you have no advisor with you? What if you are alone in your stone palace? Will you ask the stones? What if you are alone by the riverbank? Will you ask the reeds?
The reeds would know, if you taught them.
Haw!Haw!Haw! My prince, reeds don't speak. Stones don't speak. Now tell me, will you? What if the Goddess decides to change first?
Nin'sharna will be the Queen, and her son Guldug would be Unu'. But he won't be, because he's stupid. Mother promised me he won't be. She told me she will live older than Nin'sharna, and that I can marry Elanna and she becomes Nan' when Nin'sharna gets too old to bear children if mother lives long enough! I...
The teacher tried to calm down the young prince. It wasn't done to talk badly of his cousin. More importantly, the teacher couldn't let Nin'sharna think he thought more of Birurtur than of her son...
Prince Birtumur calmed down indeed. He had to know the rules of inheritance, he knew it. How nobles could marry kings and queens and hope to get their child or grandchild on the throne. Even this young, he knew it mattered a lot. He was fairly certain Unu'shebal hadn't known that. Mother had said so. And he had only reigned four years. He didn't want to reign for four small years.
Still.
It would be easier if the stones or the reeds could tell him and he didn't have to learn it.
Very nice story.
For those concerned, no rush on the orders if you don't want to. As I have a wedding to attend this evening, it doesn't really matter to me if we do an update tonight or tomorrow, though I'd prefer to keep a quick pace. I'll only do an update tonight if I recieve ALL orders.
Update 2: Years 51-75
The nation of Aagödia has faced both adversity and prosperity as the year progressed, bringing great change to the queendom. Construction began upon a great collection of buildings, known as Serephina's House of Detoxification upon the river. Using the river's natural flow of water, the building is to provide clean bathing quarters not just for the wealthy but the masses as well. Despite this growing achievement, the people have been rendered unhappy by a growing famine in the lands, which resulted in many hundreds of people starving in the streets, while the nobility feasted. This has grown resentment both in the cities and the farms of the nation, as the people become riled. The setbacks of famine to the nation's population have still been offset by the founding of the city of Grold on the coast of the Keralian Sea. Populated by migrants and former nomads, they have recognized the glory of Aagödia and joined under the unified government.
The Fimbulvetrese have established a kingdom upon the coast, near the great woods of the north. The city has grown up over the past twenty-five years as a small fishing and farming village along the coast of the Keralian Sea. The community has become increasingly prosperous and filled with Honacian migrants. After building a small temple to the Honacian gods themselves, they soon joined the growing power on the Bunrun River. The Rowachan people are said to be a sturdy bunch, eking out an existence in a truly hostile environment, particularly during the winter. The story of Surmum continues to remain a divisive one, as the monarchy struggles to maintain some balance between Honacians, Karubites, and Eannumites. They have received some aid by the exploitation of forests within the Gilasha Mountains, providing wood for further construction. Exploration into the mountains, while yielding new materials, has still led to the discovery of the rest of the Eannumite tribe. They have established the city of Noptro and created the new kingdom of Eannuma, offering a new opponent for control of the land's fields. The monarchy has attempted to appeal to the failing support from both Hondallab and the Karubites by constructing new temples in both primary regions. The Karubites have reconciled with the government over this noble gesture, leading to improved support from that faction. Unfortunately, the Honacians of Hondallab have viewed the effort as blasphemy, which has led to the city being pushed to the brink of rebellion. To make matters worse, the Eannumites feel that the monarch of Surmum has ignored their own religious faiths in favor of others. Combined with the establishment of Eannuma, it seems that the Eannumites are filling with resentment rapidly.
The population size continues to grow as Thunbloof becomes the second largest city in the Keralian Sea region, second only to Plen. Several levies have been returned to the fields, pleasing the farmer-folk, though this has brought about some concern in the higher classes of society. Some believe however, that they may well be appeased by the construction of the new Megalith Totems. Constructed out of newly acquired marble, the new efforts are to glorify the gods and the Tau-Ren way of life.
The people of Waluka have mostly managed a quiet existence upon the Wakiki River, but some problems have emerged of late. Dissidents have been seeding anger among the Slaves and this has raised the concern of rebellion against the upper classes of society. The Lower Class has also been affected by the increasing dissent, and some of the nobility are concerned that a full blown rebellion could emerge if the issues are not resolved and the dissidents exiled.
