Ishanna pondered as she waited in the room by the queen's bed.
After the death of the old king of Noptro, his son by his first wife had inherited the throne, while the aging queen-goddess remained in power in her own temple.
The cohabitation between the secular king and the sacred queen had not been an easy one. The king was the victor of a war he had fought in as a prince, while the queen was the goddess. Both had enormous support among the Eannumites, and much less among the other people. Kurabites resented the new kingship, and the heir of the godhood, Unu'enlil, had been imprisoned by the queen and detained in his own temple, acting as a puppet for the queen. She probably regretted her decision, as the king wasn't a man easily manipulated, but who ever knew what Nan'eballa thought? She had had the final voice in all religious matters, but more practical decisions had escaped her.
The situation had remained stable if tense for a few years, but today the queen was dying, and all the priestesses were acting like some strange spirits had turned them mad.
Had the old succession rules been followed, Nin'elanna should have become the new Nan. But she had been the wife of the previous Unu, and the mother of the new one, and the new king had clearly stated that she was not to be the goddess's new vessel.
Priests from Noptro had all agreed about that. Despite the appearances, they said, Nin'elanna was too old to become the new goddess.
Therefore, a new vessel for the goddess was to be designated. Normally, priests and priestesses would study the succession rules and find out who was to be the new queen from the nobles. But times changed, and the rules of Surmum were no more. Both the king and the priesthood agreed that the people would follow the new goddess appointed by the clergy, they just had to find who was the best candidate.
Nin'shari was the next in line according to the old laws, but she lacked charisma and her beauty didn't fit the goddess.
Nin'lullu was the sister of the king, and a popular princess, with lots of support from her brother party and Noptro.
Then there was Nin'Illa. She was certainly the most handsome, a young priestess daughter of a Noptro noblewoman and a Ludallab priest. She could cement the nation more than any other according to her supporters.
And then there was Ishanna herself. Nin'ishanna. Daughter of the old queen. Godhood wasn't passed directly from mother to daughter, it was more complex than that. The new Nan' was often the daughter of the old Unu', but it depended on the dates of birth and death of the previous gods, and whether Unu or Nan died first. It was far too complex. Noptro kings had a simple system: The new king was the old king's son. Ishanna could push the godhood to be inherited this way too. She might even be able to convince the king that it was in his interest to have queenship and kingship respect the same rules. If only she received her messenger's answer...
In her death-bed, the old queen stirred, and her daughter shivered at her side.
"Not now, mother. Please. I'm not yet ready..."
