Do you have to be directly adjacent to a river in order to build a levee or dike? Or can you be next to any fresh water source? Do you have to have river tiles somewhere in your city radius to build them?

I am about to try the Dutch (with the dike UU) so I want to know where I have to build my city in order to get them.

Yeah you have to be on a river to build a levee or dike. It would defeat the whole purpose of calling it that otherwise :P.

Nah you DO NOT have to be on a river to put dike on. That's the greatest thing about you. Even if your city is not exactly set up on a river but your has water tiles available it's feasible to build a dike.

For leeve once need a river tile city to enable the building. The same holds true to water plant and the three gorges wonder.

Surely I read this wrong.

Actually, you can build a dike next to an inland lake as well.

Levee: River only

Dike: River, ocean, lake (but not oasis)

I love the Netherlands. :)

@dalamb

If the city is adjacent only to a lake, but has a lot of riverside (or coastal) tiles in the BFC... or if the lake is really big! :D

you could, conceivably, have every tile in your fat cross by a river tile, but the city isnt' on a river.

I'd really like the levee to be available if there is a tile that could benefit from it in the fat cross, myself...
