In my last game I was lucky enough to get Liberalism first, and man it was probably the best move technologically I could have made. Not only are the Civics great, but I was able to get two free technologies out of the deal. I took Economics, granting me a Great Merchant, and then had him discover a tech for free (well almost free, but I had enough tech to finish it next turn)

So there we go, 3 techs for the price of one.

Interesting idea. Generally I am not in position to get Economics as my free tech (don't have banking yet), but I will reconsider my thoughts about liberalism because of this possibility.

My favorite free Liberalism tech is Democracy (I'd rather discover the less-than-half-as-expensive Economics the old-fashioned way), but that may only be practical on Noble or below.

Just make sure you learn banking before liberalism if you want to get economics for your free tech. Generally on higher levels pulling this off is not easy as 1) the AI loves to shoot for liberalism early and 2) if you waste turns learning banking first you're probably not going to get liberalism first anyway.

I've said this in 5 different posts, I may be new to the game, but I know a broken tech when I see it, and that tech is Liberalism. I make it a point to grab that ASAP, and DO NOT TRADE IT. The time garnered when I'm exploiting those Civics and the comp is still researching nets more trade material out of it than otherwise.

It works on lower levels.

But when you move up, there are times when you just have to trade. If you get a tech like Liberalism first, you can sell it for 5 or more well-known techs, which grant you tech parity.

Also, they'll research it very fast, so delaying has little effect. I don't think it's worth that 5 techs.

Getting a tech by Great Person is not quite free. It means all your future Great People will cost 100 extra GPP.

pls explain.
I know every great person costs more, but did not find any info that the usage of teh Great person matters on that

It is free if your great person comes from being the first to discover one of the special techs (i.e. music, economics, etc). These do not add to the cost of your next great person.

If you went up the metals branch through guilds, HOPEFULLY you can grab banking before this move and go for Economics and the great merchant.

But if you went through the artistic branch through paper and education, the smartest move I've seen is to keep music around, so you can grab Nationalism and quickly hit Military Tradition.

I can't decide which is better -- which means they're both good in different situations. I've won bigtime with both.
