You do realise that games run on computers don't you? if the computers get faster then it stands to reason that games will make use that extra speed, therefore the minimum requirements for games will increase with time as well.

Again, if your machine meets your needs for other things, and you're unwilling to upgrade, let it go. The game's not worth it for you. It makes absolutely no sense for you to waste your time spamming forums about conspiracy theories and your deep denial over Firaxis being a business, not a social service.

could not get game to work myself. temporarily installed on a better computer and played it fine for about an hour. (could not leave it installed) all these video problems could be taken care of by eliminating them. game design seemed excellent, but the new graphics did not improve the game at all!! much too much attention given to the "flash". poor job sid.

EDIT- seems fair dannyevilcat, but why alienate a core group of paying customers for an element of the game that i felt added nothing to how it played. who needs to see a group of horses? i just need to spot the resource to start getting my units build, period. or scroll zooming in and out. not needed. despite what jason from gamespot says, too much unnecessary attention on graphics and flash.

Hmm, you honestly think the "core group of players" for the game are using PC's that are 4+ years old? Umm, not hardly.

The 3D world was done to make the game easier to build, modify, etc. Go read Soren's interview on Slashdot in it they specifically ask about 2D vs 3D and his answer pretty much nails the reason why they did it in 3D.

Don't complain if you're behind the technology curve and soemthing -new- doesn't run on your old PC. That's like complaining the asphalt road hurts the hooves of the horse you ride, when 95%+ of the population doesn't ride a horse anymore.

If you don’t raise the minimum requirements you’ll end up having to support a huge range of hardware. Do you have any idea how long it would take and how difficult it would be to design a game engine that would run on such a wide range of architectures?

You need a certain amount of CPU speed, RAM and graphics capability to run the AI, basic interface, etc. The idea you can scale things down infinitely is assanine. Obviously no modern game can be made to run on an original IBM PC from 1981.

Developers are very good about this. A decade ago the minimum standard was often a PC a couple of years old. Civ IV's minimum is a PC you could buy 5 or 6 years ago, and the recommended one you could buy 4 years ago, which I think is more than reasonable to expect people to have.

I'm not sure how you would pulse a "maximum speed" to be used. This would have a serious negative effect of making the game quickly unplayable as people upgraded to processor types/etc. that the game didn't understand and caused the game to run too fast.

I mean, seriously, you're complaining about performance on a P3/900, and that's fine, but they also have to satisfy the other end, people like me with AMD64 3800 X2 Dual Core chips & 7800GTs (and higher). So, if they set a "maximum" performance rate, eventually someone comes out with a dual or quad core chip (the Athlon 5000+ is due out before Christmas) and the game becomes an unplayable mess for the high end gamer, which are the people most likely to buy the game.

(The assumptive is, people who spend money on computer parts, etc. are more likely to buy software vs. those who spend nothing on their computer in upgrades, etc.)
