yeah I noticed he got the game as well which surprised me. He's mostly a Fallout player. I normally only watch his Fallout New Vegas videos. Don't care for his Fallout 4/76 videos.
Grievance is a new mechanic introduced in GS that ties in to diplomacy. It essentially acts as a buffer for aggressive actions.
Say you ask an AI to not settle near you. The AI agrees (gaining some diplomatic favor if they do). If the AI then settles near you, you gain some grievance. You can then declare war and conquer that city, consuming that grievance. So you won't be viewed as a warmonger by anyone as you did something viewed as just in their eyes.
Really liking this new grievance system. Normally I don't mind if the AI forward settles me but if I see a city they settled near my capital before I even started exploring then i'm taking that city.
It's the equivalent of a back seat driver. I enjoy Quill's streams despite the criticism here. There's more to the game than playing optimally. You guys criticize him for settling close, but then later on he settles further away, but right next to a volcano. He mostly did that for funsies. His games are more entertaining than the better players even when he does things like go for Petra cities (which I don't even bother with anymore). Tried watching game mechanic, and oh God that was too slow. Civtrader I learned a lot from, but he's not entertaining compared to quill. Admittedly the live streams are better than YouTube only videos. He is playing worse than usual.
He'd play the game for a minute then he'd read chat for 2 minutes, I cannot put up with that. Plus it is always like that throughout his entire stream, he never plays the game continuously for at least 5 minutes straight. That is the advantage of YouTubers, they just focus on playing the game at all times. If I do have to watch TheGameMechanic it's to watch a VOD where i'm able to skip when he talks to chat.
Double diplomatic favour per turn from a city states sounds like it could be powerful if you are suzeiran of at least 3 city states. I think i'll be going for this wonder more often than not.
Its odd that they sensibly dropped the free settler (at low difficulty levels) that previous civs allowed but then permit things as OP as a chance of a relic on turn 1. Governor titles seem pretty OP as well. Until you get to future tech they're finite, you get one for reaching a particular point, not at random. Well not any more.
I think it does. Apparently the GPPs are't mentioned in the tooltip, but that's not something new, it was like that in Rise and Fall. The only changed thing for Russia in GS is the blizzards

Yeah, watching someone else play a game is one thing. Watching someone else read twitch chat is insufferable. I gave up on quill again. TGM has gotten better about it lately but a lot of his early stuff was the same.

I'm not really that interested in watching people play. It's more frustrating than it is informative. Plus it will ruin my first experience if I get a feel for it beforehand. So I've just been skimming through Quill18's videos trying to find which Civic or Tech unlock the Ice Hockey Rinks.
So I'm noticing Dido is still expanding towards Quill (in his #5 video) despite him asking her not to forward settle twice. It's possible the agreement expired, I have no idea how long that lasts. Honestly I don't think it's worth it.
edit: LOL at China's massive forward settle snagging tiles away from Kilmanjaro. I would be sooooo ticked if I was him. Cultural alliance is still a mixed bag. I never take it with someone I border with for this reason. And even someone far away it sometimes comes back to bite you.

I can't really remember if it was ever different but when I've been playing the game lately, the AI has never kept the promises it has made for me. The "don't spread religion" thing is the most common one I ask from them probably and it *never* works for me. Even if they say that they won't spread, they always do it anyway. Sometimes, it seems like the they will retreat their units a bit but then they are pulled right back and continue spreading a turn or two later. I wonder if there's maybe something wrong with the decisionmaking there.
I like that this also a metacommentary on Eagle's "I'm not really that interested in watching people play" (as someone who doesn't watch professional sports or let's plays for that reason)
