[GS] Livestreamer Previews Discussion Thread

Potatoes Mali game just shows how differently you have to play and he seems so used to playing one way he hasn't adjusted, and he knows it too. I know mistake are part of the game and god knows I've worn out my reload last turn button so I can't fault anyone for mistakes. Whats great about Potato is he knows it, explains it and works through it.

Finished his 1st video. The map settings with increased desert certainly hurt. And his 1st and 2nd city start locations were pretty bad, though I see why he did those. 3rd city isn't that great either except for the spice forest hills. Just because they have a desert bonus doesn't mean every city should be in the desert in my opinion. Though I guess his 3rd city wasn't in the desert. The lack of growth in his capital is certainly hurting him. He just doesn't have the growth like in his Maori game. Growth is the thing hurting him most right now. That and lack of good space to expand and early war declaration from Hungary. But he should have no problem overcoming these challenges and winning the game.

This video is a must watch . . . its the most fun 30 minutes of Civ 6 I've ever seen. Just DON'T play the take a shot whenever Marbs says "Insane or Crazy" drinking game . . . you won't make it to the end and may suffer fatal alcohol poisoning. ;)

I'm playing Hungary either 1st or 2nd . . . I want to give them a try before they get nerfed.
Take a shot whenever he says "sounds good to me".

The problem I anticipate with Mali is that if you survive in any kind of strength to the mid game, you may as well stop going because you've won. It just seems to further distort the massive drop-off in difficulty if you manage to pull through the early game with any civ.

Quill is not a bad player. He has one playing style and it works. He does the same every single game he plays (regardless of what he say he will do). He does a couple of mistakes sometimes, but only smaller things, mostly due to that he talks all times.

Deity can be tough in the beginning when you play catch-up, but playing a water map makes it a lot easier, since the AI spread out their fleet like there is no tomorrow. An AI can have a decent fleet sometimes, but it is all over the world and the AI seems to never try to go back home with it. The AI needs to be thought to have most of their fleet at home (they also need to learn not to auto-accept alliances).

As long as the AI actually build planes and also uses them, I will be happy (haven't seen it so far).

Poland had planes in the devs' Hungary livestream.

I know there hasn't been much opportunity for air combat in any livestream yet. I have a vague memory that Poland even built an AA-unit. And that is almost worth a gold star. I have never seen an AI build an AA-unit in civ 6.

I believe you are talking about Quill18 as others are. You are all correct, he isn't the greatest player, but the really frightening thing is he doesn't have to be, & won on Deity in his first game on an expansion that is being previewed. If you are a better player than him where does that leave you, particularly as most people learn as they go on.

If you mean the Canada game, that was not deity. Was emperor I think. Maybe king.

Emperor

Potato is recovering quite nicely in his Mali game from the rough start. Shows that even with a 51% production penalty, getting war declared on him twice, low growth desert cities, the Mali can still thrive. He's already got the sprawling empire message. I was thinking he didn't have much room to expand, turns out there was a ton of room to the SouthEast, and to the West. And some to the East as well. Of course his science is still garbage. I'm surprised he hasn't faith purchased any campus districts. I have no idea what victory he's going for.

I love that he faith purchased a dam. His people prayed hard, and a dam popped up from nowhere.

Well, I certainly appreciate the comments about the live-streams here. I chose not to watch any fully; in reality just one or two and the first few minutes, except Marbozir’s short canals and railroad video. Really want to have my own first experience with the game.
I watched a little bit when they starting posting them, but they made me annoyed that I couldn't be playing myself. And I wanted to get a feel for the new stuff myself without seeing how everyone else is doing things, so I'm also holding off watching any more.

Thanks to all of those reporting on interesting things in this thread!

Based on what I've read here, I think they're up to second or third for me now - sounds like a lot of fun!

I see in Potatoes game that the AI is still making great people wander aimlessly around the map for zero reason and the free settler just coming into his territory for no reason is still a thing

I'm pretty sure he hasn't even thought about a victory condition yet. Other than expanding he hasn't done anything to work toward any of them.

It also strange that you can apparently build dams downstream from floodplains and apparently they still work?

And Hungary was sending the settler through his empire while at war with him! But hey, at least it was escorted with a warrior. :)

So far the AI appears the same or worse than before GS.

ACTUALLY, using Great People as Scouts is an amazing strategy, because they can't be killed, if an enemy units "Attacks" a GP they get respawned to the nearest city.

However, I notice that a lot of times they tend to earn those people and use them as scouts when they don't have a way to activate them.

and even when they do have a spot to use them they won't.

Yeah they make great scouts, and if they have no place to settle them, they will just wander around. Doesn't bother me much. The settler was escorted by a warrior, but honestly a warrior was pretty weak at that stage of the game. And I have no idea where they were trying to get to, they would have had loyalty issues if they settled to the SouthEast of Potato. The Maori settler wasn't a big issue since they were friends with Potato.

Thought the AI might put up a fight in Quill's game, but he eventually just overwhelmed them in ships. Again the issue with military emergencies after Quill took the city (and that was only 1 city and still within the grievance range). We seen this on the Firaxis live stream. Still seems weird to me. A weird glitch with the way the grievance system interacts with the emergency system. In a way it helped him stabilize the loyalty in that city while he was in a dark age. It was nice to see the AI actually participate in an emergency for once.

So we seen the AI (both of them) participate in a military emergency and both of them levied troops I believe.

And yeah, deity ai cannot defend itself. I noticed this in my games, when even I can stomp on deity ai, and I'm not that good a player. I noticed in rise and fall the AI doesn't build walls as much as it used to in vanilla. I wonder why.
