Due to the nature of the updates previous savegames might very often not work. Just imagine when a unique unit is replaced when by a unique building like currently discussed for India: The game would search for unit files no longer available and most likely crash.
AFAIK Thal generally discourages users from updating during an ongoing game, but due to the sheer size of this project such information might be easily overseen.
I generally wait to see if the new version is causing any major bugs anyway before running it and stick it in a backup folder to look over what changed before updating.
And I understand now why this crashing often occurs. But no I didn't actually read it anywhere. One thing I had mentioned was this mod doesn't have a very concrete place to read the core changes and important things to keep in mind.
I guess part of the issue is important things to know is in the eye of the beholder ;-)
It's okay to post old versions AnthonyG. The mod browser Civ 5 used before the steam workshop had an easy way to download any past versions of any mods. Sadly, the workshop does not support this feature.
As Tomice mentioned, update Civ 5 between ending one game and starting the next. Savefiles are usually compatible only with the version of the game they were saved at.
You CAN take some components of an update and mix them in without too much trouble. Changing/updating the xml or sql files shouldn't (usually, if they haven't been renamed or functions moved to new files) break the save game in the sense that it will load, but it will alter the rules of the game, so I wouldn't advise it unless you're doing it deliberately to test bugs or features.
Or the game has progressed past the relevant changes (nobody is using knights or pikes or something and let's say an update changed knights and pikes).
... It's also more painstaking to go in and manually override files like that just to finish a save game. If there are that bad of bugs or issues, it's better to start over with bug fixes.
Thanks for the tips all. And for the files! My game is working again the last version is exactly what I needed. I'll upgrade on my next game. I definately want to finish this one. I'm currently beating up the Polynesians!
