Lonely Hearts Club, BtS Edition, Chapter LII: Stalin

I tried deity and w/ the same strategy built both the lighthouse and the pyramids (around 1800BC).
Spoiler :
W/ such strategy (settle over the stone) it should be quite winnable.

Checkpoint 4: Cultural Victory 1818AD

Spoiler :
Took Biology with Liberalism, but had to self-research through to Corp after Medicine because only Willem had those techs. Sid's Sushi founded in 1535. Sadly, only the AGG AIs have surplus seafood to trade, but I'm still gettting +23 :culture: and the 'free' food. I spread Sid's to my 3 legends and my Artist pump.

I kept an eye on Monty, and whe I saw he had Rifling (he'd been in WHEOOH for ages), I set some cities to build research to complete it myself. Trained some Rifles to add to my cat stacks (1 at St Pete in case of Boudica/Alex, and one by Smolensk for Monty/Toku).

Civ4ScreenShot0241-2.jpg

Meh! Traded for Steel with Willem to upgrade some cats. But that's not a SoD, is it:

Civ4ScreenShot0245-1.jpg

Still, I needed to scramble around for cash to upgrade. Thankfully, I had a couple of turns while the Alex bombed the defences down. Once he'd done so, I smashed him with Cannons and left him one half-wounded Curry. He duly suicided all but one treb, and we were home & hosed. Couldn't quite line up the 3 to go Legendary together, but one turn between 2nd & 3rd isn't too bad at all.

Civ4ScreenShot0247-4.jpg

No AI had completed Apollo, and Willem didn't have a city over 30k culture, so a very clear victory. Surprisingly, Monty didn't declare war on anyone in the endgame, in spite of being first to infantry...

Imm/Normal Checkpoints 1 - 3

Spoiler :

I started off settling in place and decided to play for some early wonders. Managed to get GLh and Parth in a city built to the South. Moscow has SH, Oracle (took MC), Mids, GLib and UoS. Also for a bit of cash I part built SoZ and Coll. basically the next 5400 years were spent rexing the island. I was first to Lib, I should have delayed it as no-one is still getting near it but at the time I had only met 2 AI and Wil was 1 who only had 2 cities.

So tech situation after I've met all the AI. Alex is the biggie as he has Just as a vassal and is currently at war with Monte. It might be an idea to stop this war and let Monte who only has 5 or 6 cities left time to recover a bit.

LonelyStalinTechs13600000.jpg

I've settled all GP so far (GS for acad) in Moscow so far with a GA ready to use for a Golden Age sometime. I'll probably head for space, too lazy to spend time moving lots of troops overseas. As long as I can keep Alex happy I shouldn't have any diplo problems. I just need to avoid trading with Monte. :)

Checkpoint 4 - 1914 End

Spoiler :

Well I thought I would have an easy end to this game but it seemed that Tok then Alex had different ideas.:)

Firstly Tok decided he would have a go at me. Unfortunatley for him he should realise Samurai/Knights v Inf is not a good match up. He did land a few units on my mainland but I think 1 inf killed them all with out losing 1 strength point. After this he decided to capitulate to me without me even taking a city. :) I was a bit worried as my plan had been to keep Alex happy and a vassal might ruin it for me. Seems I was right. Alex had also taken Boud as a vassal to go with everyone else so that only left me and my vassal Tok.

Civ4ScreenShot0003-5.jpg

Not often I end up drafting Mech Inf but this was a good time. I had built the CR so no anarchy. He did land a few troops on my little island but I was able to kill them quite easily and capture a Byzantine city Just had settled on the E coast of the little island. His main troops landed on Toks island so I was gifting him plenty of techs/money to upgrade his troops although he did lose 1 city. As soon as this became available I grabbed it.

AlexPeace0000.jpg

Just enough time to finish my ship and launch. So victory in 1914.

Thanks for hosting this r rolo. :goodjob:

Stalin's LHC
The Quest for space part 1

I've decided to have a go at this, Normal speed, Emperor difficulity, Monarch save.

Looking at start, 1 gold mine, flood plains etc, looking good.

Spoiler :

I won't settle on a flood plain, cardinal sin I believe, so I move 1 NE, to the next flood plain, with the intention of settling on the plains hill, unless something dramatic jumps out.

I settle on the plains hill, lots of hills about, so no loss of production, I may have invalidated the clam city, except to the north of it. Many flood plains, so health will be a problem. This city looks to be my iron works city, or wonder city.

Spoiler :
Moscow.jpg

Searching about, I come across a bear, which my scout runs from, straight into a lion on the oasis, I survive and heal.

The barb animal bull* continues, 6/7 times I'm struck by a lion at 28.3% on a hill top, still yet to scout out entire island mass.

Next, my warrior, on a forested hill, is reduced to 0.8 by a lion attack, I have to heal, stone is spotted, and I'm aiming for the Pyramids and Hanging Gardens both, 1st city settled Al la Obsolete style.

The Crap roles continue, my healing warrior, is killed by a barb warrior at 2.5% OMFG, Now I need to send a warrior escort with my settler and worker.

1440 BC I build the Great wall, so as to stop the barb intrusions, not really needed, but I'm using only warriors, and just now researching bronze working. Moscow will now build the Pyramids and Hanging Gardens with stone. St Petersburg, my 2nd city, to the west of Moscow, is settler generation, with rice and cows. 3rd city, by the stone, is for stone only.

900 BC I've explored the island, 1 turn from Pyramids with stone connected, I'm going to try for space, with a 'don't leave the Island' variation. Specialists till Emancipation, then maybe cottages.

I”ve set out potential cities in Green as 1st wave to settle, yellow and Cyan as 2nd wave and Red is the 3rd or last wave of settlements. Forbidden palace to be built in the red zone, with gold and flood plains.

Spoiler :
Mainlands.jpg

I'll need calender quickly, Oracle still hasn't been built, I could try for it and do a civil service sling shot, but too late I feel.

Tech path had been Agriculture, animal husbandry, Literacy, Masonry (Pyramids) Bronze working, Mathematics and currently on Aesthetics.

Spoiler :
Redlands.jpg

I have 13 cities set out for settlement, Plan to build Pyramids (1 turn) Hanging gardens (next), the Shwedagon Pagoda (free religion) and the Great Library. Try for as many other wonders I can get, Angkor Wat, for 1, and spam over island.

The Quest for space continues apace, will the Glorious Russian peoples be lead to space or to eternal blackness. Continued in part 2

Stalin's LHC
Check point 2

We left off our intrepid space cadets, with 1 turn to the Pyramids;
Spoiler :
Spoiler :
Wonders.jpg

Pyramids is in, I do a double civics switch to Slavery and Representation, start on a Aqua duct/Hanging Gardens combo next in Moscow.

Oracle was just built in 650 BC seems to be rather slow to me??still I had no hope of reaching it, didn't even try or want.

525 BC I settle Rostov my 5th city, and hold the Hanging Gardens for 1 turn, I may go for a 6th, with the Gardens, or 7th and be ultra greedy.

450 BC I pop out my 1st Great Engineer, settle or build a wonder, settle for the +3 under Representation is best I feel.

300 BC I produce the Hanging Gardens and achieved the greedy 7 cities, I'm losing cash to 10% research now, I need libraries in all cities for Culture and science. Next tech will be currency, code of laws and Calender.

I've messed up, I've gone on strike and losing money at 0% heh heh.

Spoiler :
strike.jpg

250 BC The strike is over, I lost 2 warriors, I now build more warriors to allow Moscow to grow, and plan on recovering my economy now. Great Light house still hasn't gone, I may build it yet.

175 BC Science is up to 52 Beakers, Aesthetics due in 1 turn, build Shewagon Pagoda, and Parthenon. Mass build workers out of St Petersburg, as its reached max happy at 8.

100 AD The Great Lighthouse was just built, oh well, and I birthed my 1st Great Scientist, who made an academy in Moscow. I've set Moscow to max growth, by firing all scientist.

125 AD Believe it or not, the Temple of Artemis was only just built, this is just incredible, my timing is now way off. I never even considered it achievable. Looking to spam the Cyan cities now, then consolidate to code of laws, and move to red phase of settlements.

600 AD The Colossus was just built, I finished 4 turns short, only tried because I could. Building the Mausoleum of Massolos, :hmm: maybe I won't get that either. Great Library was build, that really shocked me. Going for Currency, Code of Laws, Civil Service now, spam those farms about.

820 AD I lose the race for the Parthenon, I didn't really go all out, I got the Mausoleum of Massolos, 1st for me, think I'll build a market and then wealth in Moscow.

900 AD Taoism and Notre Dame were founded and built on the same turn respectively, with the Great Engineer just being born 1 turn before, such a coincidence that :dubious:.

910 AD Iron working is in, rather late, but who cares, Isolated baby 2 sources found, both in cities BFC's, so lucky there.
1080 AD The Leaders of Christianity have united under the apostolic Palace, and my 1st Great General has been born, oh joyous day's have I.

1130 AD I do a switch to Bureaucracy and Caste system, these 2 civic's I'm comfortable with, I'll now use Artists for border pops, Great Engineer who's been popped will be settled in Forbidden Palace, my designated Iron works city. Good combo...maybe not, but not really that serious about it, barb archers still in 1100's..really.

1340 AD I come across the 1st of our Enem....errr Civ's, and its the Girl with her Butt hanging out of her dress, if she's isolated, I'll trade calender for Alphabet. Founder of Christianity and the builder of the Apostolic Palace as well, a force to be watched, near to my South East.
Spoiler :

Boadica.jpg

1360 AD I come across 2 more Civ's, Willhem of the Dutch;

Spoiler :
Villhenm.jpg

and Alexander of the Greeks,

Spoiler :
Alexander.jpg

Boadica, would seem to be isolated, and I made the following trade with her, what the hell;

Spoiler :
Calender.jpg

Liberalism just went as well, no biggie, I'm not that fussed about it, going for space after all, so will trade away. Seem to have tech's on the all at the moment.

1450 AD I do a round of map trading , and unofficially find the last 2 civ's, Monty boy, and Tokie san. My 2 Caravels were deleted due to lack of funds, so I'll have to build 2 new one's to meet the civ's officially.

1520 AD I met the 5th Civ officially, and its;'

Spoiler :
Tokiesan.jpg

Behind the ball, Oh, Boadica, just gained astronomy as well, I did a couple of trades with her, got to watch my defenses now, Justinian has it as well.

1555 AD I've finally met the last Civ, and it just happens to be;

Spoiler :
Montybaby.jpg

I've now offically met all the civs, Justinian is a runaway success, Oh boy, is he what.

Spoiler :
Techs.jpg

if not for the relations, I should have accepted his request to adopt Theocracy, :hmm: may have been a mistake, maybe not.

Spoiler :
Relations.jpg

That's it for Check point 2 onto Check point 3, if I can survive.

Oh Rolo, I do have most of the world builder saves actually if your interested, leave me a note

Monarch/Normal

Spoiler :
Gold in the capital's BFC! Never gotten that with a Russian leader before! Anyway, I settle in place. Scouts had very poor luck, had to wait until Archery to explore the continent much. Build Great Wall, Stonehenge, Great Lighthouse, Great Library, Colossus, and the Temple of Artemis. Two cities, Smolensk and Orenburg, were just founded (should have founded Smolensk quite a while ago). The turn after I built my first Caravel:

mightyempirestalinlhc.jpg

Since all but one of my cities are coastal, I built the Great Lighthouse and ToA, and every foreign city will also be intercontinental, I'm going for a trade route economy. My guess is at least one other civ is isolated and probably backward, I might target them with privateers.

Part 2:

Spoiler :
Met a caravel of Willem's right before finding Boudica's continent:

stalinlhcmetwill.jpg

Ouch.

Then met Boudica.

stalinlhcmetboudica.jpg

More like it. Massive trade with her, Code of Laws/Currency/Alphabet/Calendar for HBR/Meditation/Monotheism/Monarchy/Construction plus 60 gold!

Alex was next, he's at war with Willem so I assume they're on the same continent. He wouldn't trade Civil Service so I ignored him.

Justinian:

stalinlhcmetjustin.jpg

Poopie.

Met Tokugawa. Finally I'm ahead of someone!

mettoku.jpg

Like the real Russians, I moved the capital to St. Petersburg.

I'm sure this trade will help a lot.

bigtradestalinlhc.jpg

Finally met Monty:

stalinlhcmetmonty.jpg

Typically backward.

I'm mediocre!

Immediocre.jpg

Miraculously, I was first to Liberalism and got the Great Merchant from Economics. I completed Mining Inc. and Broadway. Willem was able to found Sid's but didn't. Beelined Rocketry/Fission after Steam Power. I hope Justinian is ready to burn.

Part 3:

Spoiler :
Didn't end up attacking Justin. Both he and Willem stopped reserach and went for culture. Both were too strong to conquer; Willem even had Monty as a vassal. I didn't even notice Willem was going for culture until Amsterdam went legendary, I had to launch eight nukes to capture it with my backward Rifleman army (he had Tanks, Marines, etc.) Founded Sid's, build the Internet and the Space Elevator. Launched my spaceship in 1972; final score 13889.
