Welcome to the 10th edition of the Lonely Hearts Club for BTS. In the Lonely Hearts Club we explore strategies to cope with one of the most dreaded situations in Civ IV ( possibly the main reason for reloads after the military collapse one :p ): starting in isolation....

For the 10th game ( yeah, the xmas edition was a treat :p ) in BTS the choosed leader was Wang Kon of the Koreans:

Aka, space turtler....
Wang is Fin/Pro. As we already played both traits, I'll not talk much about them, but a Fin civ with out of the bat CG I defenders ( CG II with barracks ) is a tough nut to crack ( as most of you already discovered when in a game against him ) and makes a perfect space turtler. Not that a pretty rifle invasion to other lands would not be softened by a drill II promo or by a defender CG II rifle.... His UB helps with the space race as well, but it may help you to get a infantry vs rifle war. So you can choose between peace and war with Wang...

His UU.

Civ4ScreenShot0085.jpg

The Hwatcha is a catapult that has a bonus vs melee units...One of the most loved units in pre-BtS ( hwatcha+swords +axes would break any city of that era ), the nerfing of siege in BtS dropped his utility to really low levels ( in fact they are the only military UU that can't kill in ofense :crazyeye: ). Added to the fact that in isolation you probably won't have much of oportunity to use them ( as well as most of the pre gunpowder UU ), I think that the Koreans will play as they didn't had UU

His UB.

Now this is the building that all the Fin civs would love to have.... the Seowon
is a university that gives a extra 10% in research ( 35% vs 25% of a regular university ). Like in this game tech is power ( at least it helps ;) ) a boosted :science: multiplier is always welcomed. Good for peace and good for war...
So, here are the settings( from noble save ). Game is Fractal :

And the start:

Strange start.... good grassland area with seafood, but desert not far away. I wonder if this will not be one of those capitol powered games :(

About saves: As usual, pick the level you prefer in the end of the post. Deity save is in the next post.

Again a small request ( not mandatory :p ) :

We ask the participants to do, if possible, a write-up with the victory save and a description of your game ( strategies, techs researched, wars,...). All the info should be in spoiler tags ( to not disturb other people's games ). If you want ( we would like to :p ) post reports at this moments of the game:

Checkpoint 1 - when we have explored the island and are aware of what resources it has. Its not so important when this is, but this is a time to discuss city sites etc. Don't look into a checkpoint 1 spoiler until you have reached this point yourself.

Checkpoint 2 - first contact - when we have met all the other AIs. At this point we can discuss our strategy to get to this point and our plans for dealing with them.

Checkpoint 3 - when we are committed to a victory condition (or at least think we are).

Checkpoint 4 - Victory (or defeat).

The last words are to wish good luck to all :goodjob: . And let the games begin!

P.S We don't have any kind of problem with defeats and reruns. Just play and enjoy ;)

Never done one these Lonely Hearts Club thingies. Will have a crack at it on Monarch.

I've started this one out on Immortal, but I'll probably try again on emperor simply cause I'm worried about the starting location.

Spoiler :

Lots of tundra/ice/dessert on a small island, no pre-calender luxuries, floodplains, or stone. Might be a good challenge tho.

Going to start monarch because :
- though I never ever ever played him before, I have a positive feeling with Wang
- notes about the starting spot scare me a little bit :scared:

I'll either try immortal or emperor, depending if I win on my Ragnar christmas edition (I'll try to finish that soon). Land doesn't look very friendly.

Monarch Checkpoint 1:

Spoiler :
Settled in place. I quite like the capital - 2 clams a pig and some hills for hammers, and some for wood for chopping. There's also marble (a bit too far away to be of any use for Oracle) and copper. What I don't like is the rest of the map. Tundra to the south, random deserts and mountains dotted around, lack of happiness resources. I'm also annoyed that river is in the tundra, and I hate building towns in the tundra until biology.

I think the best thing to do here is use the financial trait, coupled with the Colossus to work the coastal tiles to get the economy going. That would mean chopping Oracle for Metal Casting. This would also put me on the path to Monarchy, which seems like a priority. I'm also thinking of shooting for the Great Lighthouse, to help out the economy when Astronomy is finally researched. Maybe I'm being a bit optimistic here, but I'll give it a go. The marble can help with building the Great Library and Parthenon.

I've got 4 additional towns in mind:
1. Pig + Clam to the south of the capital.
2. Pig + Clam + Copper on the northern coast.
3. Fish + Marble in the southwest.
4. Pig in the northwest.

Monarch checkpoint 2 ( finally had time to play :( )
Spoiler :
Settled in place and started reseach with fishing ( this is a all forest start, no need for agri before BW... and we have 2 seafood in capitol BFC )
As I already knew the countryside is pretty bad ( lately my RNG has been creating a lot of this stupid starts ), I started to plan a MC slingshot + collosus.
After some animal hunt ( lots of wolfs and bears ) I settled my second city
Spoiler :
Civ4ScreenShot0031.jpg

Not exactly stellar, but has a good food potential and cooper.

Soon enough I got the first part of my plan going
Spoiler :
Civ4ScreenShot0032.jpg

Got CoL soon after... and:
Spoiler :
Civ4ScreenShot0035.jpg

Now I could start to settle more cities ( only had 2 at the time )

Another crucial tech to maximize the few decent land we have:
Spoiler :
Civ4ScreenShot0037.jpg

Revolted to HR ASAP... and to Beuaro when we got to CS
Spoiler :
Civ4ScreenShot0040.jpg

Soon, I finished the wonder that some players consider to be the most important in game... in a beuaro capitol it can really make a diference
Spoiler :
Civ4ScreenShot0045.jpg

Some techs earlier ( and after avoiding founding Tao ), I got my UB:

And some turns later ( 1 turn before getting Optics and long after the circum navigation bonus has been collected ( after seeing the map it is easy to understand why ) ), my first chap appeard:
Spoiler :
Civ4ScreenShot0051.jpg

Clearly not the best guy to have in game, especially after switching to Theo and going to "hands full" status ASAP. And taking in account that he got astro soon ( in the same turn that I lib'ed it ) ( a wise move of Nappy: he has the Great lighthouse ), it became my #1 concern.

And another chaps came by:

Not exactly thrilled... HC is a serious tech leader and I doubt that we'll get to catch him soon. Raggie is agressive enough, Surya is a backsttabber and João is a bully... Peter could be trouble , but looks that João gave him a beating ( Portuguese cities with russian names )... but I still fear Nappy more. Routing to Chemistry ATM...

Map of the world ATM

Thoughts

Clearly this will be hard... two fin civs and a good warmonger. HC is already trailing to Demo  Nappy most surely is preparing to dow me sooner or later ( gave him tribute once, but i doubt that it will be enough )

After chemistry, I'll follow the classic route of the Fin civs ( PP ,demo, bio... )

I've started playing on the immortal save. I can deal with this land on emperor but it may be too large of a disadvantage against the immortals...

checkpoint 1.5
Spoiler :

I haven't reached checkpoint 2 but I paused after the circumnavigation bonus was grabbed by another civ. And I don't even have optics yet! I'm currently beelining optics after going up to paper on the lib. line. I have a GS for most of education so I'm going to try to get astronomy ASAP. Although I didn't built that many coastal cities...

I settled in place and started exploring and found the tundra to the south. I planted my second city down there to grab the pigs and the tundra river tiles. I cottaged the river tiles and got CoL with the oracle. I settled my third city west of my capital on the coast to run some GS. I got a slave revolt in my capital and immediately changed to caste system. I'm not going to stay in slavery this game if the slave revolt event is active and I don't have much food

I then settled my fourth city west of the second on the tundra river again. The fifth went west of that near the wheat. I just settled my 6th at the end of this set. I barely survived a barb uprising event. Go protective archers!!! One repelled 4 barb spears with a 20% cultural bonus. I was pleasantly surprised as I thought I'd lose that city...

Civ4ScreenShot0077.jpg

I was playing this for a little bit on Cheftain...going for a culture victory.

First, I founded Buddhism. Then, I was greeted rather early on with messages saying "the Incan civilization has been destroyed!!!" and "the Viking civilization has been destroyed!" Barb events, I guess. Hinduism got destroyed when the Incans were wiped out, as I noticed it was now 0% and had no holy city....

I also got Confucianism with the Oracle and Taoism with a GP...right around the time I got Taoism I seen a message "the Russian civilization has been destroyed!!!" and Judaism and Christianity were 0% as well....odd. Late for a barb event, but the AI doesn't really raze cities (Espesically holy cities)...

Anyway, so I was then greeted with a "the Khmer civilization has been destroyed!!!" message about 20 turns later. Did I mention that like 20 great generals have been born? So then I grab Islam...so then about 60 turns later I'm informed I have lost a domination victory to Joao II, without ever meeting him. :crazyeye:

The log showed that it was infact Barbs wiping out the Incans, but the Vikings and Russians were attacked by the Portugese. Then Napolean took out Survarayavarayaraman II and then Joao declared on Napolean and won a domination victory as soon as he captured one or 2 cities...also, there was no religion on the other continent after the Russians got wiped out...

Well....faliure of a game :(

Why does this thread have so little posts? Did this happen to everyone else?

Aww man. Why did Wang Kon get so little love? Nobody even beat the game? I actually like Korea. The UB is one of the best in the game, and protective is actually pretty good for post-rifling wars, the only kind in LHC games. Protective marines are awesome. Promote down the drill line and they'll take out the defenders weakened by fighters with minimal injuries.
