A Batavian woman offers flowers to a soldier of the Reichsrepublik
GERMAN POLICE ACTION IN BATAVIA. Amsterdam, the Emergency District of Batavia
Ultimately, public indignation towards the powerful industrial, shipbuilding and military conglomerates and cliques that are the powers behind the throne in the Federal Republic of Batavia and the principal backers of all influential political parties could not be sustained. The loss of the crown jewel of the Batavian empire - Eastasia and Indochina - to an "irreproachable cabal" of corporate schemers was not weathered well by the Batavian people, especially in light of the decision to pursue an unprovoked and dubious war in Central America. Demonstrations turned to walk-outs and strikes, and as Batavian soldiers deserted their posts, mobs of various and sundry radicals contended with one another. Batavian industrialists and parliamentarians fled the country to the Reichsrepublik, begging for intervention. The Reichsrepublik was only too happy to oblige.

Soldiers of the recently engorged German army flooded across the border into Batavia. Presently the army and its close political allies, Rhinelander industrialists, represent the most cogent force in German affairs. In an open letter printed throughout Germany, General Siegfried Lohengram, the face of the new Wehrmacht, justified the intervention on the grounds of maintaining the balance of power in Europe and ensuring that the chaos and lawlessness that "today afflicts the Netherlands" does not spread to other nations.

Much to the disappointment of the Batavian parliament requesting the intervention, the Germans have chosen not to enact reprisals against socialists, labor activists and strikers who respectable people in Batavia see as culpable for the disorder. Instead, it seems the Reichsrepublik has functionally annexed Batavia as an "Emergency District" and administers martial law with an eye to ensuring a vice grip on Batavian manufacturing centers.

LHASA CEASEFIRE ENDS THE CATHAY WAR? Lhasa, Tibet
Guangzhou emperor now sits in a dungeon somewhere in Tokyo, thanks to a ceasefire brokered between the Empire of Japan and the State of Tibet, which now enjoys the return of ancient homelands in the east. Unwilling to prosecute war against Japan, despite its home field advantage, Tibet agreed to draw a line in the Gobi Desert that now marks the border between the engorged Japanese domains and the rest of Asia. Total victory for Japan? Tokyo's hold on its new possessions in Cathay is precarious indeed, as the Japanese emperor's ministers struggle to assimilate Guangzhou emperor's bureaucracy in time to contend with what appears to be a massive peasant uprising in the making, with uncertain but supposed support from a great number of regional administrators, even those that the Japanese had thought could be bought.

EASTASIA BEGINS MASSIVE NAVAL BUILD-UP. Jakarta, United Shareholders Republik of Eastasia
While Batavia burns, Eastasia has begun taking "whatever steps necessary" to ensure its independence. Surely by doing so the shareholders will protect not only their profit margins but also the great and forever-threatened White Race. In Jakarta, well-heeled transplants from Amsterdam march back and forth from government offices to corporate headquarters and vice versa, writing editorials warning "those back at home" of the coming war for supremacy in Asia and the Pacific that must be fought to secure the region for white civilization. Alliance with White Ubuntuland, and rumors of a similar pact with the United Empire, has provided much-needed legitimacy to the Shareholders Republik, which looks nervously across the seas to Tokyo, seat of the "yellow warmonger."

Crowds of protesters and lookie-loos in Amsterdam
GENERAL STRIKES, WALK-OUTS AND DEMONSTRATIONS BRING BATAVIAN ECONOMY TO A GRINDING HALT. Amsterdam, Federal Republic of Batavia
The loss of the Republic's crown jewels - Eastasia and Indochina - thanks to the activities of a "monied cabal" was not well-received by ordinary people in Batavia, or even by otherwise orthodox politicos who were excluded from the coup. This bald-faced disrespect for the public trust by important and powerful people, coupled with the unprovoked attack against Aztlan and the ignominious surrender of the expeditionary force, provoked a series of demonstrations and strikes that have culminated in a walk-out of workers from nearly all of the Republic's most important industries. Railroads, ports and factories have all been shuttered as workers take to the streets waving red flags, shouting slogans and throwing rocks at police officers who futilely attempt to stem the tide of public discontent. Emergency sessions of the Republic's parliament were convened only to further accent the dire nature of the situation, as so many representatives refused to endorse any kind of measures to recognize the demands of the Dutch public, and so many others refused to make any kind of compromise with their more conservative counterparts.

Total anarchy now threatens to engulf Batavia, as martial law is tentatively and begrudgingly enforced by an occupying German army that shows no signs of leaving when - if - the anarchy ends. Jobless youths roam the streets of Amsterdam, Rotterdam, Groningen and numerous other cities in gangs, competing for dominance of the byways with socialist militias who clash even more still with their reactionary counterparts. Those who can have begun leaving the country in large numbers, either to the Reichsrepublik and the Angevin heartland or defecting like so many others to the Shareholders Republik.

It is only the presence of German soldiers that prevents open conflict between the factious groups which now compete for legitimacy in Batavia.

An excerpt from a pamphlet depicting Imperial troops defending a trench against the Khwarezmid horde
STALEMATE ON THE EASTERN FRONT. Eurasia
Khwarezmid forces have been successfully pushed out of the Caucasus by the Empire and the Slavonic Theocracy, though a more truthful retelling of events is that Khwarezmid emperor withdrew his armies from the mountains to fight the advancing Slavonic armies on the steppe, where they would be more useful. But the open plains are no less of a meatgrinder. Trench warfare now engages the majority of Imperial, Khwarezmid and Slavonic forces. Unfortunately, the front lines have moved not at all as the size and sophistication of each side's fortifications grows daily, and so do the artillery batteries assembled in seemingly futile attempts to break them. Rumors of food shortages escape the borders of the Slavonic Theocracy, despite the best efforts of its clergy. How long the grinding, bloody struggle can be kept up by either side is anyone's guess, as the sheer size of the conflict and its front lines in the middle of nowhere proves difficult for the powers to maintain.

One of many demonstrations by radical factions of the Christian Commune in the Empire
SOCIALISTS DEMONSTRATE FOR INTERNATIONAL REVOLUTION IN THE EMPIRE. Krakow, Sacred Slavic Empire
It's a very scary world for traditionalists in the Empire, who have only now begun to make peace with the incredible power over hearts and minds wielded by the Christian Commune. In sympathy with their comrades in Batavia, Slavic socialists - "communists" - under the Commune have taken to the streets with their banners and their pamphlets and their slogans, calling for the Empire to act to bring about international socialist revolution and thereby, the Kingdom of Heaven. Radical clergy and hotheaded Commune politicos have taken to the airwaves, broadcasting from public squares their demands, a list that is always topped with bringing an end to the war against the Khwarezmids and turning the attention of the Empire's armies to God's true enemies: merchants, bankers, ungodly nobles and the Great Satan, the United Empire of America, whose persecution of socialists has been taken very seriously and very personally by the Commune.

Depiction of Scandinavian troops beating back the "savage hordes" in a Stockholm newspaper
MASSIVE NATIVE UPRISING IN THE GOLD COAST. New Malmo, Scandinavian Gold Coast
Centuries of subjugation, first by the Kingdom of Sweden and now by all the "Nordic fatherlands" of the United Kingdoms of Scandinavia, has not worn well on the Ashanti in what is called the Scandinavian Gold Coast. Under the leadership of an Uppsala University-educated prodigal son figure called only Commandant Kofi, thousands of native mine workers and their families have risen up in the brush and various inland outposts, sending the white pigs running to the coast where fortifications are being assembled to hold back what appears to be a quasi-professional army of native dissidents. It appears that the Commandant is a well-read man, as in skirmishes with his adherents, those captured speak of how they will bring "Andean-style socialism" to Mother Africa. This has sent shudders throughout all the offices and environs of the Scandinavian imperial system, which fears not only African rebels with leftist pamphlets but also the unruly Swedish schoolboys who distribute them.

Provencal troops line up to exit trenches outside of Marseilles
THE INVASION OF PROVENCE. Marseilles, Kingdom of Provence
Most disturbing news leaves the port of Marseilles, where last ditch defenses are being made by the Royal Army of Provence to hold back an unprovoked avalanche of German soldiers descending from the Swiss Alps. For several decades the Kingdom of Provence has enjoyed a charmed existence, pledged to neutrality, reaping millions in petrol and textile profits from its colony in the Niger. No longer, as the Reichsrepublik finds it necessary to obviate treaties signed in the first half of the last century by its constituent Kingdom of Switzerland and Bavaria. To "ensure strategic solvency" and "maintain the balance of power in Europe," the Reichsrepublik has declared Provence once again a part of the quasi-sovereign German Realm, and taken harsh measures to put it back in line with its fellows.

Provence's mostly nominal military, strongest in Niger rather than at home, crumbled beneath the unexpected onslaught. By the time the Royal Army could properly react, German front lines approached the coast and Marseilles, which holds on thanks only to Corsica and Sardinia, whose garrisons barely supply and reinforce what remains of the Provencal army.

In London, Angevin ministers debate what is to be done about supposedly neutral Germany's acts of aggression in western Europe.

Imperial Gendarmes respond to a socialist demonstration in Montreal with mass arrests
INTERNMENT, DISAPPEARING OF AMERICAN SOCIALISTS. Quebec, United Empire of America
The House de Quebec has had enough. In response to the rising tide of international socialism, mass arrests of socialists and socialist-sympathizers throughout the United Empire were ordered, neatly coinciding with demonstrations by American leftists who object to the Empire's war-footing and preparation for hostilities with its neighbors. For many, these arrests came in the form of jackbooted paramilitaries knocking on their doors in the dead of night, billy clubs in hand, ripping fathers from their children, sons from their mothers and so on. Public outcry has been more or less silenced by a press blackout, with news of the "disappearing" of America's leftists broadcast only by foreign news services. The blackout has been effective insofar as it has prevented friends and family of those disappeared from communicating with one another, but inside America's cities, unrest brews as those who were not radicalized by pamphlets and magazines are now radicalized by the actions of their government.

A "Revolutionary art" depiction of People's Republic troops fighting for global liberation
HOSTILITIES RESUME IN THE ANDES. Lima, People's Republic of the Andes
Despite the best efforts of the Avalonian embassy in Lima, the People's Republic and the Empire of the Andes are once again openly at war. Regiments of the People's Army's new "stormtroopers" flooded across what was once the "demilitarized zone" in a surprise attack that painted the mountain passes red with the blood of patriots and martyrs. This new offensive comes after the end of the internecine conflicts that previously hobbled the leadership of the People's Republic. The rise to power of the radical faction, under the leadership of the steely-eyed and photogenic First Revolutionary Salazar, has brought about what concerned Avalonian observers are calling a bloodthirsty frenzy. Salazar has authorized a new circuit of revolutionary tribunals to try and if necessary execute his political opponents. Moderates - "collaborators" - languish in dungeons underneath the new Revolutionary Assembly and are hauled into these same courts to face summary judgment in what can only be called show trials. Blood runs into the gutters at public executions where the decades-repressed Andean people cheer when the firing squad takes aim. A new department of secret police has also been created by Salazar to root out closet capitalists and strangle counterrevolution in its crib.

Meanwhile, the Empire of the Andes buckles under the sheer numbers brought to bear by the People's Republic, whose so-called peasant hordes beat against the gates of Santiago. It seems that the Empire's days are numbers if the war, recommenced, continues as it has recently. In Avalon, many wonder if they have not created a monster, as the People's Republic becomes more and more authoritarian, more and more bloody-minded and more and more bent on what First Revolutionary Salazar calls "total control of the message" of international socialism. Pamphlets about the "transcendant ideology" of the Revolution enjoy significant traffic among Avalonian radicals, who have already begun to hail Salazar as the face of global liberation.

Batavian troops surrender at the Panamanian Isthmus
BATAVIAN EXPEDITIONARY FORCE SURRENDERS. Panamanian Isthmus, People's Republic of Aztlan
Operation De Ruyter has come to an unfortunate end as the supply train for Batavia's expeditionary force dries up and Batavia's dubious war machine clicks, clicks and stalls. For some time the Batavian expeditionary force remained more or less unaware of events in the home country, as they set about an occupation of the isthmus. It was as Aztec forces moved south, and it became clear that reinforcements were not on the way, that the ranking officers on the ground began to doubt the feasibility of their orders to hold the isthmus and prosecute a campaign north. More gutsy figures in the rank and file attempted to furnish a last stand against the advancing Aztec army by foraging in the homes of Aztec peasants, who proved themselves to be just as warlike as their propaganda purported. Quickly, the expedition force's control of the canal and the surrounding area unraveled as the civilian population rose up, and supplies began to dwindle. By the time the forces dispatched to reclaim the canal actually arrived, the expeditionary force had already decided to pack it in, and folded without a fight, knowing that there would be no relief coming from the occupied homeland. Meanwhile, the naval contingent that had been sent to assist the expeditionary force steams back across the Atlantic to dock in German ports.

TEZCATLIPOCA LINE NEARS COMPLETION. Aztec-Nueces Border
As the Batavian expeditionary force and "Army of the Panamanian Isthmus" surrenders far to the south, Aztec forces begin garrisoning the almost wholly finished Tezcatlipoca Line, now the most extensive and sophisticated network of defenses in the world. Supposedly, the Line exists to defend Aztlan forever more against colonialist aggression from the Frontier Republic of the Nueces, although supposedly the Frontier Republic is not making preparations for a war against Aztlan. On the wrong side of the Line's impressive anti-infantry cannons, the Frontier Republic continues acting out of character, granting land rights and allowances to native groups who are being armed as auxiliary troops to complement a growing professional military.

Troops of the Imperial Army disembark at Dzentiki Heeni's re-constructed port facilities
OCCUPATION AND ANNEXATION OF ETERNAL NUNAVUT. Dzentiki Heeni, the Imperial Military District of the Inuit
Under orders directly from the Emperor, troops in the recently-occupied Eternal Nunavut are now overseeing the settlement and constitution of a new province of the United Empire of America, one in what was once "the Inuit State" and is now new land made safe for civilization by the White Race. For their collusion with the pseudo-genocidal regime in Dzentiki Heeni, American troops have begun rounding up "native landowners," known by any other name as Inuit chiefs, though Imperial policy dictates that native titles are not to be used in reference to savage authorities. The tribal homesteads and mining lands collected in these seizures and arrests is being turned over to the authority of the House de Quebec, rather than to white landowners, who now constitute an under-class in comparison to the well-to-do eastern bourgeoisie who have come out to survey new properties and establish "business and industry" in the new territories.

The Monetary/Financial System of the Sacred Slavic Empire

The Sacred Slavic Empire’s currency system was based on the historical significance of the three power structures of Holy Roman society. The Imperium. The Clergy. And the Urban Guilds. Generally, minting is done by either sanctioned guilds of several Imperial Cities, or by the Emperor’s royal mint.

First was the gold coin, the Eagle Crown, or the “Orzel”, also known as the “Zloty.” On one side, it is marked with the Crowns of Holy Rome imposed over the imperial two-headed eagle. On the other, they are marked with the left profile of the current Emperor.

Second was the silver coin, the Papal Cross, or the “Krzyz”, also known as the “Grosz”. One one side, it is marked with the Papal Cross. On the other side, it is marked with the right profile of the current Pope.

Finally was the bronze coin, the Guilder Mark, or the “Grzywna”, also known as the “Kopa”. On one side, it is marked with the symbol of the minting city, which is always an Imperial city. On the other side, it is marked with the principle guilds of that city.

Generally, 30 Guilder Marks equals a Papal Cross, and 12 Papal Crosses equals an Eagle Crown. This means 360 Guilder Marks equals a Eagle Crown. Henceforth, they shall be called Crowns, Crosses, and Marks. Also common, as the Guilders became more wealthy, they also begun minting the Duzmark, which was worth 10 Guilder Marks. The Duzmark was a larger bronze medallion, with a delicate silver center facing. Their (albeit limited) usage of silver in their currency was gaudy, and served to represent their increased status in the late middle ages.

In the past, the Crown was used primarily for payment of military services and dowries amongst the nobility, and the Cross was most commonly used by the Clergy. The common people, if they happen to use coins, generally settled on the Mark and Duzmark. This division is less official and more economic: the Monarch and Nobility held the most wealth and power, and best distributed their wealth between each other with the Crown. The Papal Cross allowed an simple coin for those of moderate wealth in their tithes, as well as preserved the illusion of their relatively humble status in the physical realm. The Guilder Mark served as the small values most commonly used by the common people.

During the height of Holy Roman power at the end of the failed Reformations, the Eagle and Cross were tied with the Iberio-Batavian Ducats as the common currency of Catholic Europe. However, the great rise of Angevin power (and especially, their prodigious banking institutions) led to the slow marginalization of their monetary system. The “New Model” monetary system, first launched by Holy Roman Empress Christina V and reformed by the Slavic Republic/Second Republic (reforms adopted by the young Catholic Republic/Third Republic) established national banking institutions under Guilder control, reforms the Imperial Mint/Treasury into a proper arm of government, and begun the issue of accredited paper money, which was decimalized as per the popular enlightenment monetary thinking of the time. The Crown remained the currency of exchange, but instead of the Cross and Mark, it is decimalized into thousandths, with this new smallest currency called the “Tsi” or “Tsiak” (one thousandth). However, it is often nicknamed the “Malekopa” or “Malopa/Makopa” aka “Little Mark” because three Tsi is approximately worth one Mark.

This “New Model” system, practically, runs concurrently with the “Old Model” system, almost purely due to the popularity of the old model coinage system. It is pretty much an open secret, however, that much of the newly minted “Old Model” coins are heavily debased for circulation, with common metals forming cores for gold and silver facings. Commemorative runs of pure specie “Old Model” coins are fantastic collectables and investments in this day and age. However, foreign investments and payments almost all run on the “New Model” system, other than the new fashioned tradition of exchanging gifts of said commemorative pure specie coins to seal the start of long-term partnerships.

The modern Holy Roman Monetary and Financial System, like many other institutions of the Sacred Slavic Empire, are a curious mixture of old and new, medieval and modern, ancient sacred cows and newfangled pet projects. It serves well enough, with an almost charming inefficiency and backwardness clashing with the growing tide of new management. Already, there are those eyeing the newest banking innovations of the United Empire of America, wondering how, and in what political climate, could such a system be implemented here, the most Sacred Empire in the world.
