Cavalrymen of God's Army prepare for battle against the Khazar horde​

THE CRUSADE AGAINST THE KHAZAR HORDE. The Khazar Steppe, Near East
A fire blows across the plains. Once again, a butterfly has flapped its wings a world away and pushed events into motion that might otherwise have remained fixed. Had the Sacred Slavic Empire not signed an alliance with its neighbors and previous regional rivals, Germany and the United Kingdoms, the Slavonic Theocracy might have stayed at peace with its heathen neighbors, the Khazars. Yet Khazarkhan has for many centuries now been a practicing Jew at the admittedly nominal behest of the Khwarezmid emperor, and the languishing, arguably stagnating Slavonic state needed to breathe free in the open air of the Khazar plains. The Pontiff of Moskva, secure in the knowledge of support from the Empire in Krakow, declared the beginning of a crusade to liberate the plains from the heathen Khazar and suddenly clerics all throughout the land were shaving boy's heads and commending them to Almighty God.

Whatever the state of the training and the equipment of God's Army, it was certainly better than the topknot-sporting boys that Khazarkhan's hetmen would collect from the tribes. And it would have been no contest, with the overwhelming combined force of the Empire and God's State, had the Khazars not been supplied with machine guns and artillery from Khwarezmid armories. God's generals had not prepared adequately for the defense that the Khazars were able to muster, and the initial thrust southward by Slavonic cavalry towards Xacitarxan was cut short by Khazar artillery and Khazar trenches. For a short time it seemed as if Khazarkhan might have pre-empted crushing military defeat, but in short order the arrival of reinforcements from the Empire turned the tide of the war.

In the end, even a modern army with state of the art training might not have been able to withstand the onslaught the Empire brought to bear. Shipped by train from the Slavic heartland, well-appointed Imperial men-at-arms massed in such numbers that the blinding gleam of their bayonets from across the field compelled many Khazars to abandon their redoubts and surrender. More frightening still were the warbirds that flew in circles over Khazar positions, reporting back to airfields miles away from the front line in the Imperial camps. Eventually, the only troops that did not desert Khazarkhan in battle affected an orderly retreat to Xacitarxan, where after several weeks' bombardment by the Empire's heavy siege guns, there was parlay.

It was then that the Empire and the Slavonians discovered they had arrived at cross purposes. Emissaries of the Slavic Emperor laid out plans for the annexation of deposed Khazarkhan's realm by the Sacred Domain, much to the surprise of Slavonic diplomats who had expected their Imperial allies to stand aside once the fighting had been done. For the moment, the Empire and the Slavonic Theocracy maintain a joint occupation of what had once been the Khazar State, made possible chiefly by the supplication of Khazarkhan and the grudging respect paid to victors by the cowed Khazar tribes.

THE THIRD CATHAY WAR. All of Cathay BURNS
It began innocently enough as a dispute of extraterritoriality between Tatarkhan and the Guangzhou emperor. As these things go, Guangzhou merchants knew what they were signing up for when they began surreptitiously undercutting Mongol state industries. Ever since an awkward state visit to the Sacred Republic of Avalon - meant to demonstrate Mongolia's independence from European influence - Tatarkhan had become fascinated with "state socialism." This new take on Mongol autarky was quickly sent down from Tatarkhan's court to all his offices throughout the land, and the results were surprisingly positive. Not only was Tatarkhan finally able to secure economic solvency, but confused European diplomats were beginning to take him seriously as an independent actor. All this came crashing down when Guangzhou emperor and his slimy Han tricksters began pushing on the Mongol system.

Of course, after that, there could only be war. While this was deeply obvious to both Tatarkhan and the Guangzhou emperor, it fell on the capitals of Europe like a storm when everyone began to take seriously the prospect that their investments in Cathay could be compromised. For a few weeks, Europe held its breath, hoping that when the Mongols and Guangzhou went to war it would merely be another in a series of awkward face-saving conflicts that sputtered out. But it was not to be.

The Empire of Japan, which European alarmists had long predicted would rise to upset the white man's order, made its opening move in a sudden and surprise assertion to Tatarkhan's court that Mongol cavalry had crossed into Japanese territory in Manchuria and even assaulted several villages, whose names had been unimportant until now. It was about here that Tatarkhan realized he had made a terrible mistake, but these things being as they are, he had no choice but to play his hand to the end.

Tatarkhan's hordes moved quickly. Knowing that he could never hope to raise force numbers matching those of Japan, Tatarkhan instead ordered the construction of a massive network of fortifications north of Peking. In every direction Tatarkhan could see, trenchworks and artillery batteries snaked into the distance. Yet there was only so much that could be done before the arrival of the Japanese, who had already crushed Tatarkhan's highly nominal navy. Forty divisions spilled from Manchuria, falling on halfway-built Mongol defenses like a swarm of locusts. The ferocity and tenacity of the armies of the Rising Sun seemed unmatched, as much to Tatarkhan's surprise Japanese generals took one look at the astounding casualties incurred by the thrust south to Peking and simply ordered more troops into the meatgrinder. Under naval bombardment and pursued by Japan's armies, Tatarkhan fled Peking with his entourage, headed west to a hopeful asylum in the Khwarezmid Empire.

It was just when the Empire of the Rising Sun took Peking, and Guangzhou emperor's armies broke the Mongol line in the south, that something very awkward happened. A flotilla of Batavian troops passed Formosa in the South China Sea and entered the Yellow Bay, intent on passing through the Japanese blockade and deploying behind what remained of Mongol lines. Or at least, one can only presume that was the shareholders' plan, as when the virtually defenseless flotilla refused to stand down and leave "Japanese waters," Japanese admirals felt they had no choice but to sink the whole thing, leaving many thousands to drown at sea and refusing to take the dishonored and defeated as prisoners.

"MITTELEUROPA" INDUSTRIALIZES. Krakow, Sacred Slavic Empire
A mutual lowering of tariffs between the Empire, the United Kingdoms of Scandinavia and the Reichsrepublik has brought significant economic growth and all the social turmoil that accompanies it to central Europe. As part of the formation of the Baltic Pact, Krakow, Stockholm and Munich coordinated a campaign of economic cooperation that has allowed the construction of a vast network of railroads throughout central Europe. This direct linking of German and Slavic industrial centers has allowed for the unfettered flow of materiel from the Rhineland to the Empire's factories, which have begun churning out absurd amounts of military armament to match the most gun-happy of Burgundian weapons magnates.

In Scandinavia, all the industrial activity to the south has precipitated a similar expansion of Norwegian steel production. The economic juggernaut that could arise from continued cooperation between the Empire, Scandinavia and Germany has raised many eyebrows particularly in London where the Angevins begin to fear that the economic supremacy of the Empire of England and France is about to be usurped by the continentals.

Yet as the wheels of industry turn, many begin to fear for the health of the machine. The success of Slavic industry has propelled a number of rabble-rousing figures to prominence in the Empire's guilds, leading to the renewed success of the "Christian Commune," an awkward alliance between radical bishops and the labor movement. The Commune's leadership has publicly disavowed any association with the socialist ideologies prominent in the New World, but their proposed policies almost always hurt the guilds and favor low-level, factory floor journeymen.

Everything in central Europe is now in motion.

New troops of the Shahankesar's legions report for training​

RHOM-SAHR MODERNIZES. Konstantinoupolis, the Empire of Rhom-sahr
Shahankesar Khosrow XX is no fool, or at least that is what his propaganda asserts. As fires burn to the north, to the east and all directions in general, the "Sick Empire" of Rhom-sahr has begun to put out its own small blazes. First and foremost Khosrow's agenda was the modernization of the legions. For years, the Imperial Legions of Rhom have been culled haphazardly from districts and millets and small townships throughout the Shahankesar's domains. Pressed into boots and leathers, young boys who already knew how to fire a rifle and how to wrestle each other to the ground were sent on tours throughout the empire with the expectation that this kind of training would be enough to enforce Shahankesar's peace. No more.

The order came down from Konstantinoupolis to begin the modernization of the legions according to European standards, and new uniforms, guns and orders were summarily distributed to centurions. This military retooling and build-up has come on the heels of disturbing events in Turkey, where construction of mass fortifications on the western border with Rhom-sahr's ally and nominal protectorate Kurdistan has finally been completed with the help of both the Khwarezmid Empire and the United Kingdoms of Scandinavia. Rumors that these new Khwarezmid and Swedish cannons are merely a prelude to a massive foreign horde knocking on the Shahankesar's gates are unabated, but the rumormongers can take heart in the fact that if there is to be a fight, Khosrow XX seems determined to go down swinging.

In addition to the significant military reformation, the Shahankesar has begun subsidies of Rhom's already significant cotton industry. It comes with the usual sense of irony that Turkish uniforms are still made with Egyptian and Levantine cotton, which is now being harvested with such a surplus that many approach Shahankesar's court with entreaty to bring workers in from outside of the Empire to thread and fashion the stuff. Many around Shahankesar speak of the potential gains to be made by allying the Empire's new economic power with the Mitteleuropan giant of the Baltic Pact, but he remains coy.

"Communistas" of the Navarre Commune​

THE RISE OF THE NAVARRE COMMUNE. Pamplona, the Navarre Commune
Perhaps recent events could have been avoided had His Majesty's government chosen to do something to bring an end to the mine strikes and walk-outs in Navarre, instead of beginning construction of a pan-Algerian railway. But then again, one of the biggest complaints of nascent Spanish socialists is that government in Madrid is both ignorant and incompetent, unequal to the challenges of the time. Armed confrontations between Guardia Civil in Pamplona and striking mine workers finally reached a head when mine workers under the leadership of local socialist ideologues seized royal armories and began distributing guns to angry Basques. What followed was a haphazard, far-too-late mobilization of the Royal Army to confront the threat of Navarrese "communistas," who had already seized the countryside and were busy fortifying and closing the mountain passes into Basqueland.

This is when things truly became ugly, in a number of ways. What is known for certain is that the sudden loss of contact with Navarre and its iron deposits was A Bad Thing for the Spanish colonial empire and for the construction of the United Kingdom's pan-Algerian rail. Determined to complete the project, His Majesty's government and contracted corporations began importing Norwegian iron and often wholesale steel from Scandinavia. With luck and this infusion of materiel, the Spaniards were able to finish their African railway. Yet this boon has been negated by the truly distressing news emerging - according to many, at least - from the new Navarre Commune.

Supposedly, after taking control of the region, Navarrese communistas began a campagn of retribution not just against land and factory-owners but against Castilians in general. Reports of these retributions range in severity, though the most outspoken and concerned speak of the coming campaign of extermination against Navarrese Castilians, who are painted as a besieged minority. Meanwhile, the Navarre Commune extends what requests for support it can to the New World, where the forces of international socialism are massing.

ANGEVINS INSTITUTE STATE ART PROTOCOLS. London, Angevin Empire of England and France
In response to the Bordeaux "art riot," the word has come down from the royal court to put the screws to bohemian artists throughout the Empire. Under royal decree, privately owned galleries throughout the Angevin Empire have been shut down by gendarmes, and dissident art confiscated. In order to ensure that art and culture reflect the godly values of the state, the imperial government has instituted a campaign of censorship and created "artistic districts" in London, Paris, Bordeaux and other culturally important cities. These reforms have come under attack from both within and without the empire, as the royal grip begins to crush free expression and channel the energies of the empire's intellectuals towards propaganda.

TURKEY COMPLETES WESTERN BORDER FORTIFICATIONS. Istanbul, the Turkish Khanate
Turkkhan has announced that his vaunted fortifications along the border with Kurdistan have been completed, with the help of Scandinavian and German industrialists who descended on Istanbul with entreaties for contract work. Great earthworks, as well as bunkers and artillery batteries have been assembled along Turkey's western border, now manned with German cannons trained - so they say - on first the Kurds, and then on Rhom. Yet if Turkkhan has aggressive intentions, so far he has held back, preferring to staff his new fortifications heavily and then sit, and wait. Perhaps, as the rumors say, he truly is insane.

LATINATE WHISPERS SILENCED AS ANCONA FORTIFIED. Ancona, Republic of Venice and Genoa
As quickly and mysteriously as they appeared, professions of Latinate nationalist sentiment in the ranks of the Doge's army have disappeared. Perhaps it had something to do with the way the Doge disappeared many of the "retired" cavalry officers who demonstrated against the Pontiff of Rome and the Ecumenical City, but perhaps instead it had something to do with the massive fortifications being erected in the port city of Ancona, with great guns boasting devastating potential against ships of all kinds. In addition to the works being built in and around Ancona's harbor, like many European states the Republic of Venice and Genoa now boasts an air force which made a dramatic entrance over Ancona, as for the first time reconnaissance planes of the Doge's Air Force took flight.

SHIP, TROOP BUILD-UP IN NORTHERN RAJYA. Northern territories of the Daksindwipa Rajya
Both the Rajya and Batavia let the killing of Batavian missionaries in the north go without comment, yet many suspect the issue is far from settled as the Rajya has slowly begun moving most of its naval operations to the depopulated northern coasts. The sudden appearance of industry and military garrison in the north has further transformed the lives of the northerners, whose time as isolated religious ascetics may be coming to an end, as more and more young villagers are recruited either for the navy or for shipbuilding.

BATAVIAN INDIES INDUSTRIALIZE. Jakarta, Batavian East Indies
The shareholders of the Batavian East Indies corporation have ordered the construction of vast rail networks throughout the East Indies, as well as the importation of modern machinery for the harvesting and procuring of the Indies coffee crop. To meet the demand for manpower necessitated by the construction of all the new rail, officers of the East Indies Publik Force have begun conscripting natives into chain gangs which march up and down the new rail lines hammering this and that, grumbling ominously. Much to the concern of more traditional figures in the East Indies corporation, the party of "radical colonialists" have authorized the construction of factories in Jakarta and other urban centers in the Indies and the training of natives in machine construction and management, in the hopes that the East Indies will become an on-site manufacturing center for the Batavian Asian empire.

ANGEVINS LOST IN THE DESERT. Nejd, Arabian Peninsula
In an attempt to consolidate Angevin holdings in Arabia, the order came down from London to begin the pacification of the Arab tribes of the Nejd. This has been met with extremely limited success, given the Arabs' ability to fade in and out of the desert, obfuscating Angevin troop movements and exhausting water-laden patrols. There have also been rumors of support and succor being given to these new enemies of the Angevin realm by the Sultanate of Baghdad, which continues to control - at least nominally - the Persian Gulf.

AMERICANS ALLY WITH WHITE UBUNTU. Cape Town, Republik of White Ubuntuland
The United Empire of America and the Republik of White Ubuntuland signed an alliance granting the Americans basing rights within Ubuntuland's borders, which the House de Quebec has used to begin constructing a major American naval installation just outside of Cape Town harbor. What will come of this is uncertain, but White Ubuntuland has welcomed a small American garrison and begun importing American guns and ammunition in huge numbers, as they eye native tribes suspiciously.

KHWAREZMID NATIONAL STEEL COMPANY. Khwarezmid Empire
In a bid to establish more independent industry within his borders, the Khwarezmid emperor authorized the creation of the "Khwarezmid National Steel Company" with the goal of creating a native manufacturing industry to match those of the European powers. Insufficient funding however, and the breakdown of the nascent economic relationship with the Khazar State due to that polity's crushing military defeat, has rendered the National Steel Company's gains more or less moot for the moment.

Soldiers of the new Andean Popular Front defend earthworks​

WAR, SOCIALISM COME TO THE ANDES. Empire of the Andes, South America
It has finally happened. As sharp political minds had been predicting for decades, the Andean Empire's project of labor repression and peasant relocation has finally ended in blood. The Red Hand, linking up with smaller and less famous socialist "terrorist" cells throughout the Andes seized armories with the help of defecting regiments of the Imperial Army and entire provinces rose up in support of what the revolution's leaders are calling the "Andean Popular Front."

In the north, Peruvian mine workers and their peasant relatives rose up in support of the Popular Front, seizing first Lima and then the surrounding townships. To the exception of a coastal strip that remains loyal to the Emperor, Peru declares its allegiance to Andean socialism. But like so much else throughout the former Andean Empire, this progress was not bloodless. Guerrilla warfare in the Andes has been costly not just for the royalists but also for the Popular Front, which with inferior funding and inferior training has sustained heavy casualties throughout the ongoing hostilities.

Matters have gotten even more complicated thanks to the intervention of the United Empire American Empire and, nominally, the Sacred People's Republic. With the Republic of Aztlan, at the formation of the Popular Front, Avalon declared a blockade of the Panama Canal. The result was that American forces scheduled to pass through the canal from the east coast had instead to be transported across the continent to a western port in Seattle, delaying American support for the royalists, and making significantly clear that the detente between the United Empire and its socialist neighbors cannot last forever or indeed, for long. When the American intervention force arrived, it met an Avalonian "humanitarian blockade" armada that was in the process of shelling royalist ports. Not wanting to get ahead of themselves, both sides waited until American troops were deployed to begin firing on one another, as formally neutral Avalon fields volunteer brigades called the Sons of Cuchulainn.

Above, the skies are filled with the new aircraft of the United Empire and the Sacred People's Republic, which out of awkward courtesy spy on each other's troop movements but agree not to fire on one another. At least for the moment. The royalists, with help from the United Empire, have managed to secure Santiago and its environs, as well as put down peasant uprisings in Patagonia. Many have fled east into the Pampas frontiers of the Platine Audience, which has announced its intention to shelter refugees from the war.

Most significant to the outside world is probably the pioneering of aerial bombardment by the Sons of Cuchulainn, who have begun lobbing grenades and rigged cans of petrol from aircraft at enemy positions. In most cases, this has been a purely psychological measure, but occasionally the bomb-lobbing Avalonians have achieved spectacular results when a well-aimed grenade lights up the ammunition of an entire American gun battery.

THE ANTI-TERRORIST ACT. Quebec, the United Empire of America
Determined to bring about an end to whispers of socialism and revolt throughout the Empire, the Imperial Parliament passed the Anti-Terrorist and Bank Acts at the suggestion of the House de Quebec. The Anti-Terrorist Act grants the government extensive powers to crush socialist dissent, and already gendarmeries throughout the United Empire are taking out the lists they had compiled for the past several years of potential socialist rabblerousers, and making house calls. Huge raids on dissident newspapers and magazines have crushed entire subcultures of American socialists, who had previously avoided notice. The Bank Act has granted the government significant powers over the economy to regulate the actions of American banks and the flow of currency throughout the Empire. The result has been the spectacle of an increasingly centralized, increasingly militarized American state that has become a model for right, forward-thinking politicos throughout the capitalist world.

One of dozens of Nunavut internment camps for whites​

ETERNAL NUNAVUT BEGINS INTERNING WHITES. Eternal Nunavut, Alaska
In some of the weirder and more discomfiting news coming from the western hemisphere, Eternal Nunavut has reasserted its membership in the international fraternity of socialist states by rounding up and interning its white citizens in order to secure the independence of the "commune of the native peoples of Nunavut." American nationals and white settlers along the coast have been pushed into mass work camps called "concentration camps" at gunpoint. The camps themselves are certainly cold and ugly, but no one can corroborate the rumors that Eternal Nunavut has begun starving and working its whites to death. Either way, tribal authorities have begun producing anti-white propaganda in line with the new position of the government, and reports of racially-motivated killings have begun to spread as whites flee the country in large numbers, flooding into the United Empire and creating a not insignificant and very angry diaspora.

AZTLAN MILITARIZES BORDER WITH THE NUECES. People's Republic of Aztlan
Under the pretext of stopping smuggling by citizens of the Frontier Republic, the People's Republic has deployed a massive force to the border with the Nueces. These troops have begun constructing a network of forts and redoubts to house what appears to be a new permanent troop presence on the Aztlan-Nueces border. Indeed, the new garrison has been hard at work arresting smugglers from the Nueces, which has precipitated even icier relations as the Frontier Republic begins to suspect that Aztlan is detaining its citizens in large numbers simply for spite. Yet, at the same time, the Frontier Republic has begun repairing its relationship with the Lakotas and other northerly tribes, who they have been arming and training as a makeshift border patrol. All serious people agree nothing good can come of this kind of escalation, yet it goes on.

AVALON HOSTS INTERNATIONAL SOCIALIST CONFERENCE. Port Saint-Breandán, Sacred People's Republic of Avalon
In the midst of all the uproar and upheaval, the Sacred People's Republic has attempted to rise to leadership over the international effort to liberate the workers. In Port Saint-Breandán, delegates have gathered from the People's Republic of Aztlan, Eternal Nunavut, the Platine Audience and even a small commission from the Empire claiming to represent the Christian Commune, to discuss the weighty issues of the day and bring about liberation. More than anything else, the conference has demonstrated the practical if not ideological conformity of the world's socialist states, who as American propaganda asserts, seem to be coming together to bring about the end of the old order. The conference was kicked off with a parade through Port Saint-Breandán's streets, showcasing the Sons of Cuchulainn and a number of parade "floats" dreamed up by local Laochí.

AZTLAN DEVELOPS OIL INDUSTRY. People's Republic of Aztlan
In order to ensure economic self-sufficiency along the lines of the late Mongol Empire, the Aztec government has ordered significant subsidies of Aztlan's oil industry and the construction of refineries to ensure that the Aztecs control both the drilling and the refining processes. Many speculate that the development of Aztec oil is the harbinger of the People's Republic acting as the coinpurse and fuel depot of the coming armies of international socialism, which are already engaged in a hateful campaign to crush honest men. What can practically be said about Aztec accomplishments is that they have been successful to a significant degree, so much so that many foreigners have begun touring the new Aztec refineries to take note of how the People's Republic conducts its business. Interestingly, the Aztec government has declared an embargo on sales to capitalist states of the new refined fuel reserves.

"MONKEY BUSINESS" PUT TO REST. Frontier Republic of the Nueces
After consulting with his cabinet, the President of the Frontier Republic opted to allow local governments to decide the legal status of gradualism. Quickly, most of the Frontier Republic's district legislatures passed laws banning the teaching of gradualism or indeed any mention of gradualism in a state capacity. Intellectuals the world over have decried the Frontier Republic as pioneering a wholly new form of atavism, as its government continues to use the cudgel of lawmaking to crush new ideas.

The document basically outlines
1) a division of former Mongol lands such that the coast and north would fall under Japanese control and the south and inland would fall under Guangzhou jurisdiction. The mongol lands, worth 5EP, would be divided into 2EP for us and 3EP for Guangzhou. (based loosely on current borders)
2) Guangzhou, recognizing that the lands are unequally divided, would pay 5EP to Japan as a one-off payment.
3) We would commit to recognition of one-another's borders and the sovereignty of each others's empires.
