I am totally intrigued with the idea that this game can be played with so many variations of strategy, especially at high levels. Usually, as you go up the difficulty ladder, the "road to victory" gets narrower and narrower. Here, it seems to stay fairly diversified.

That being said, I could use some tips. I currently can only play the game through GameTap, which only offers the original vanilla version, currently. I am planning to buy the game + BTS soon, but for now, I am stuck with what I have. I have looked on this board, but cant seem to find many tutorial/walkthroughs for the version I have, most of the SE advice has been re-vamped for BTS and its new features.

So what are the basics for Vanilla SE wins at Prince or above? Which leaders are best? What is the best tile management strat? Tech research order? GP management? I have searched, but so much seems to be written on BTS that vanilla is falling though the cracks.

well someone will, so i might as well refer you to a few educational postings:

1) the war academy - there is loads of advice for high and low levels in there
2) sistulli's ALC - well, he's moved on to emperor but they are still a good read for all-round strategy.
3) any post in strategy articles

other than that, just playing and reading strategy board will help.

i won't attempt to answer all your questions but i will say that all leaders can be won with but need different strategy. my vanilla favourite was catherine of russia. good techer, nice traits combination and an incredible UU. just my two cents.

also, bts isn't that different in principle. still very worth getting though.

oh and welcome to civfanatics. :)

Thanks mate. I actually FINALLY found what I was looking for in JackOfClubs' thread in the Articles forum, but I still hope to get some tips in this thread, as I come up with questions I cant find answers too.

Also, I have been reading a lot of Obsoletes ideas, and his "style" is so anti-establishment I want to play it, LOL

Ask DaveM....just don't mention cottages to him. He hates them
