I have several screen capturing utilities, such as OUSU and Fraps, but want a utility that can capture in-game screen shots of game action - ie. a capture of when a unit is being killed. All the utilities I have cannot capture in-game action, so if I try to capture a pic of a unit when it dies, I only get a shot after the unit is gone. Any suggestions?

Brucha, I would ask Mumpulus if he ever comes around, I've seen the type of screenshots you want in his story "surrounded by insanity".

Or PM him ... according to his profile, he was active recently.

Well, I'd go for the VLC media player. You can make a screencast, then freeze the image and either take an individual frame as a pic or make a short animated GIF of whatever it is you're recording.

Then there's always the "Print Screen + GIMP" approach. Lotsa trial and error. There are some add-ons and plug-ins you can try.
You can also try using Tiffany.

Generally, you can always try browsing the Sourceforge for free progs, e.g. greenshot; but always remember that it's open source software, it can crash without warning and you can't always be sure of the program maker's intention.

With Screenshots, the problem is it is very hard to get the precise screen shot you want... often the screenshot cannot grab the actual animations in game.

You could use something such as Debut Video Capture Software (freeware) to quickly grab a video of Civ3 ingame; although any video capture software should work, and there are plenty of freeware ones out there. Then simply play the video in a video player such as Media Player, and this way you can simply pause the video at the part of the action you like, and just use the Print Screen keyboard button to capture the precise screenshot you want.

This would be the easier method of getting shots of units being killed, etc... w/o all the frustrating trial and error of hoping the screenshot got the perfect shot you wanted.

Can someone sticky this so that they don't keep asking the same question?

I use Irfanview, which does take the picture at the moment you push the button.

I will try this out, I hope it works.

I did a search for this subject before posting, but all I came up with were general questions on how to capture screen shots and not in-game action. However, my search ability stats can be sometimes pretty bad....

Your best bet is to capture a quick video image of the action, then from that video get a screen shot of the exact action shot you want. It might take a minute more to do, but if just doing a screenshot does not work (which is usually doesn't, perhaps Irfanview is different), then you will spend much greater time getting the same result.

You need to wear the +1000 gloves of smash!

Yep. Use VLC for that.

There's the fanmade Screenshot assistant in the first page of the Utility Programs sub-forum.:wavey:
A forum truism: The surest way to get a thread ignored completely is to sticky it.
So true, I've been a member of a few forums (thankfully, I've never been an Apolyton fagn).
Or, even worse, make a specific sub-forum for it, like the Tutorials or Utility Programs sub-forums. :wallbash:

SSA is a good program -- it's been my default screenshot program ever since I found it here -- but I don't think it captures in-game actions. If I take a picture during a battle, seems as though the shot is of what "will" happen a half-second later.

Hey you just need civ 4

I started playing Civ III again the AoI mod, tell me how do you take screenshots during the game?

Read above. :whipped:
I'm too lazy to re-post or even do a multi-quote.

The story of mankind asking the same things over and over. Welcome to Earth Dude. In any case I will just play the game. I really do not need to take screenshots, but I was just curious.

Just read the posts in this very same thread and you'll find half a dozen useful programs. :whipped:

If the game is that backwards it's not worth it. Although it is fun to play.

Backwards? Dear me! all you have to do is press "Print Screen" and then save the clipboard to somthing else.
