LotR29 Odd Aztecs

We will want a good core of puppet cities. At some point, though, we might want to sow salt and let various AIs come in and compete, so we have more units to kill and cities to raze, so we can get more culture. That makes sense, right? Burn and pillage our way to Utopia?!?

I like puppeting Hanoi. Sidon may well get the same fate. If we can reach that barb camp by Oslo, though, I'd be pretty tempted to go out and get it. Free (essentially) influence with a city-state isn't something to sneeze at. And a maritime one to boot? It would benefit our puppets, too, IIRC.

Barracks and Heroic Epic would be good in Tenochtitlan, too. That 15% strength upgrade isn't something we want to ignore.

To be clear, we get the culture benefit from all unit kills, not just those from jaguars. Jaguars are good in jungles, so we can use that, but they're not entirely necessary for culture.

As for great artist spots, I suppose we can build buildings that provide them, but we shouldn't actively be using those specialist slots. If our puppets produce great artists, well, we can use them for whatever. Same with city-states that might gift us great artists (possible with the right social policies). We can use those however we like.

Wonders which happen to provide more than one culture are OK, as long as culture isn't their sole purpose. Stonehenge is out. The National Wonder that doubles culture in a city (once you have a monument in every city) is out. Hanging Gardens and regular Gardens are OK, because they serve many purposes.

I'm still on the fence about the wonder that creates two great artists. That's quite a ways in our future, though.

Lurker's comment :

The Hermitage requires a museum in every city.
To build a museum, the city must have an opera house, which requires a temple + monument.
All 4 buildings produce a total of 15 cpt and cost 9 gpt.
Only the temple and museum have artist slots, a total of 4.
And last but not least, an artist produces 1 cpt.
Well, that's a lot of investment with a very small reward.

Btw, puppet states do have the habit to build a monument first.

Given Sparthage's schedule, as previously covered, should I be picking up the save? Maybe have him do a double-turn on the weekend to compensate?
Sure, I think that that might just be the best way to get my turns in. Just go ahead and play on. I'll play some this weekend.

Last comment.
Because the Aztec UB conflicts with a lighthouse, I've noticed cities also give :c5culture: when killing an enemy unit.

They produce a lot more than 15cpt after you factor in the effects of social policies and wonders that improve culture output, which you'd certainly be getting if you're interested enough in culture to build opera houses and museums.

So comes a new dawn. The cycle continues. Our place is clear, and the Gods must be appeased. Our feet walk the path.

Our warriors report many new barbarian settlements; we shall remember them, for they may someday produce worthy foes and sacrifices.

The same cannot be said for some of our rich but weak neighbors:

Their proposals are, of course, rejected. For the Aztecs, there can be only one path. All our strength must be devoted to walking that path. Our time is now:

Some of our neighbors understand the nature of war. We hold common ground, and we shall cooperate.

Now even stone yields to our dedication and strength:

CivilizationV_DX112010-11-0601-49-40-48.png

In time, we shall defeat even the hardest metals of the earth. For now, our feet walk the path:

Our temples run with the blood of Hanoi's defenders, and their people serve as decreed by the gods and enforced by our strength. It is enough - for now. A new dawn shall arise, and the cycle shall begin anew.

The new dawn, however, belongs to the next generation. They shall follow our footprints down the same eternal path, for the Gods demand it.

[OOC: I seem to habitually ransack SG coffers whenever my turn rolls around, but I think that the results are worth every penny. By spending our standing cash reserves on Jaguars, we've acquired Hanoi, it's gems, and it's horses without delaying our progress on the Oracle. Our happiness has dipped into the negatives, but we'll bounce back when our marble quarry completes. We even have a substantial standing army of 5 total Jaguars and a Great General, including our scouting unit. If we have or can take Iron then we'll have a solid, upgradeable infantry army that heals after every enemy killed.

Important foreign policy information: on the same turn that we discover Masonry, Hiawatha and Ghandi both declare war on Napoleon. He's apparently been expanding fast enough to piss off his neighbors.]

Roster
Arathorn -> On Deck
Methos
Sparthage -> UP NOW (for 20 turns)

Nice progress, Corbeau. I hope Hanoi produces some culture for us fairly soon. :) We need a good source of puppets.

After Oracle, I think we should work on barracks and Heroic Epic in Tenochtitlan. It will be our only source of military production, so we might as well have stronger units coming out. Because we will have some casualties at some point.

I'm getting this every time I try to load the save.

Any of you know how to fix it?

FML. I thought they fixed this? I thought we proved that they fixed this?! What the hell, Firaxis!?

I withdraw. I'm done with CiV SGs. I don't know when or what will break the game, and I take long enough to play my turns anyway. This is just stupid and frustrating for everyone involved.

Lurker's comment :
I'm sorry to interrupt again.

@Sparthage
Other players, including me, are also facing the same error message when loading someone else's savegame.
In your screenshot I've noticed you have Steam in the on-line mode.
Two others, in this thread : http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?t=396534 have updated Steam also very recently.

Btw, I've been able to load Corbeau's last save without problems in my regular civ5 version and my last Steam update was the day when the 1.0.0.621 patch came out.

Lurker:

I am sure that is the issue as that is about when many of the saves started to not work.

I can load the save-game, and my Steam client was updated yesterday.

@Sparthage: you definitely have Civ5 version 1.0.0.621 ?

@Sparthage: you definitely have Civ5 version 1.0.0.621 ?
Definitely. I'm not writing from the civ5 computer, but the last time I checked, I did have it. I've also downloaded the mongolia civ if that has anything to do with it.

I'm back, though after scrolling up it appears I didn't post in this thread I'd be gone for the weekend.

I've also downloaded the mongolia civ if that has anything to do with it.

Anyone who updated has the Mongolian civ, so that shouldn't be the problem. This is irritating. I haven't tried to load it yet, but I will tonight.

Edit: I can't recall, was the .62 the Mongol patch, or was it .621?
