LotR29 Odd Aztecs

I don't know, between those two I was finishing two games that had been affected by the fixed bugs. I only just found the Mongolia civ on Friday.

Lurker's comment :

I can't recall, was the .62 the Mongol patch, or was it .621?
The Mongol DLC came during the 1.0.0.62 patch, at Friday IIRC.
A few days later, at Monday, the 1.0.0.621 patch was available.
I had no plans to update to the latest patch immediately,
but I had no choice because I had forgotten to set Steam back in the off-line mode.

You don't have to set it to off-line mode. You can also set Civ V to never update. I haven't done it yet, since I'm not sure its needed, but eventually I'll set up multiple versions of the game, as I'm thinking SG players should probably do. :hmm: That might be good to do now, come to think of it.

If Civ5 were blowing me away, then I would probably be much more willing to set up multiple versions. As it is, my frustration with stupid, inexcusable save incompatibility and bugs is making that prospect seem like a lot of work for little gain.

I'll hopefully have time tonight to at least load up Civ5 and check the save with my system. I was away all weekend at state volleyball.

Feel free to play. I'll try and figure out the problems on my computer. When I am able to play (without the error), I'll tell you guys.

First order of business: HEAL! Our jags are a bit under the weather from taking Hanoi. Barbs are around. They can die, but I do occasionally protect them from others, so we can be the ones to kill them.

A cultural city has a quest we may well want to take up. It'll mean another puppet (out in the sticks), but it's probably a good idea, at some point.

Research-wise, after Bronze Working, I went for Iron Working. We will want swords at some point. Then I recommend Trapping and then the Wheel.

In terms of game-winning directions...

All that experience should hopefully help us build up some great units.

We are rather lacking in targets right now. Though I think I have found one.

Osaka should burn. That area will get rebuilt and we'll get to kill more units to get more culture. We can hopefully kill a number of Japanese reinforcements, too.

After Oracle, I was working on barracks to unlock Heroic Epic. I think we should build HE (for the minimal culture, sure) to get stronger units. Armory, too, should come, I think, somewhat quickly.

After wheel, we have to decide on HBR vs. Math (vs. something else?). Gold and science are both going to be hard to come by, I imagine.

Corbeau, I understand. I wish I could disagree, but I really can't. If it improves, I hope you'll come back. But I don't think any of us are really holding our breaths...

Spot is open if anyone else is interested!

Looks like Hanoi is building a Monument, so we'll gain some culture from that city soon.

I burned Osaka and killed a single unit and lost a jag due to a three way bombarbment. Japan didn't send any units at me, so I moved north to pull some out and wound up in another crossfire and lost another jag. At that point I pulled my two remaining units and general south and am in the process of working around Japan looking for units to kill. He came to me at one point offering peace for everything we had, which I refused. Out of curiosity I just checked what he'd do for peace and he isn't willing to do anything. I do have another jag in the queue, which will be complete in 1 turn. I also swiped a worker and he's working his way home.

Due to the high amount of ranged units, one of our jags does have the cover promo. It's already benefitted him.

I stopped at turn 79 since we need to discuss what our tech plans are.

I also sold our OP to a few AIs. Looks like the going rate is 43 gold.

Is there any way to list all the CS requests in-game?

City-states that have available quests have a little symbol next to their name in the diplomacy window. Those can be checked, so the quests don't go away -- they just hide for a little while. I try to check those when I play alone or anytime I grab a SG. It's something, at least. As a plyer, I try to highlight the important ones.

We started with something of a disaster. Our jaguars on a hill, with the GG, were killed by Japanese warriors. Which means we lost the GG too. Ack!

29-625BC-1.jpg

After that, everything went more or less smoothly. I hired some archers and brought them and all our three remaining jaguars to the front lines, and was able to take out the Japanese spearmen and two Japanese archers without further losses.

Here is the situation as it stands currently.

29-625BC-2.jpg

The jags on the hill have 4hp, and a promotion available. I think they are safe, and would take the rough terrain II promotion instead of healing, but I've left it up to the next leader to decide.

Other things which happened:

We met a Chinese scout, and sold open borders for 50g.

Our workers have hooked up two units of iron, and are working on another two. We could at this point upgrade a couple of our jags to swordsmen (but would have to return to friendly territory to do so).

We learned about Horseback Riding, and next turn will have discovered Trapping. We could use some trading posts. Our workers are currently building a road to Hanoi.

Tenochtitlan has started building the Heroic Epic.

City-State news:

Seoul (cultured) wants Genoa (maritime) eliminated.
Warsaw (cultured) wants Budapest (military) eliminated.
Budapest and Oslo both want the same barbarian camp eliminated.

We could go after Genoa and/or Budapest (Genoa is closer). The only thing to watch out for is the city state perma-war declarations if we become too aggressive. I think we're safe with taking out one more CS.

That puts me up, I think. And unless we can get a couple more easy kills from Japan, I may well just take peace. Any objections? I mean, I think we want to be at war a lot, like nearly all the time, but the particular enemy isn't terribly important, IMO.

I'll try to play tonight. If I can't, though, we may let Sparthage jump in, since it's the weekend.

Oba didn't have a reasonable view of peace to start with. So I stayed around, promoted, and captured a worker. Then we got peace for free.

I took advantage of the peace to heal for a bit. But peace isn't the Aztec way. So before the turnset was over, I declared war on Napeleon. He was much closer than any of the city-states under a death warrant from others. All that really matters is that we're at war.

I built a horseman and then started on the National College. Science is a bit of a problem for us right now. We need to keep on it.

One jag got trapped behind a new Japanese city and is on its way to the front. It should be able to stop by and promote to a sword en route.

Here's the current front....

Once we raze Orleans, we may well want to get peace and swing around and puppet Grand River. We could use more population and such. It's also in our immediate core, so it has value and doesn't expand our borders.

We'll let Sparthage play up to 20 this weekend. Just be careful to maintain our forces. Casualties are to be avoided at nearly all cost. Also be sure not to gain a social policy while we are burning a city, because it counts as ours and raises SP cost.

Grand River is cancelling our trade route and while I realize we're going to be capturing GR soon, we're also currently at -8 :gold:/turn. He's willing to trade OB and 217 :gold: for our gems, or straight OB for OB.

I'm not sure if the rules allow it, but any excess workers and/or other units that we capture or don't need, we could gift to a cultured city-state to make them our allies.

Did some checking on possible trades and the best so far is:

Gems: 244 :gold: and OB (China) or 100 :gold:, 3 horse, and OB (Japan)
Marble: 26 :gold:, 2 iron and 4 horse (Russia)

I'd sell at least one of our luxes, if not both, and trade straight OB for OB to the Iriquois.

Drawing out units: I was thinking about using captured workers to draw out units. Basically capture a worker and then move it within capture distance of an enemy unit. Make sure we have a jag, or horse, within range who could retrieve our unit and earn :culture: from killing the unit that captured the bait (worker). So far we don't seem to be having very good luck drawing enemy units out.

The Persian city of Susa looks like a great puppet city. We can see four FP, plus a bunch of grass tiles that could hold a lot of trading posts for us. I'd like to capture that city soon.

Speaking of puppeted cities, Hanoi is making more :culture: then our own city is. While I like puppet cities for the income, we may end up earning most of our :culture: from puppets then from killing units.

Well, wars will let us kill units, I guess. That's one way to get culture. :P Seriously, though, Sparthage, I don't see how you're to blame for the wars. With horses and archers and almost catapults, though, I think we'll be fine for a fair while, as long as we keep our casualties minimal.

We definitely want a road in the bananas tile NE of Grand River to connect it to our capital. Tenochtitlan should probably crank out a couple more horsemen, too, so we can protect against everything. We don't have the luxury of a lot of cities to rush stuff from, so we need to use Tenoch for that a LOT of the time.

Why won't Hanoi grow? It's been size 2 forever! I'm guessing it's working the gems hill tile and it won't work the one irrigated grass I gave it. We're probably going to need to ally a maritime city-state, just to get our puppets to grow even a little.
