Loving Tectonic (version 3.17 maps)

I updated anyway to try it out, is the earthlike setting supposed to be just a bunch of small continents floating in the ocean? I've only looked at it through WorldBuilder though, do they eventually form up into something more earthlike as you play?

Edit: This is what I'm talking about

Bit disappointed with this map script. I'm seeing a lot of plain stupid stuff, like islands composed of fertile grassland completely embedded in the pack ice. Fair enough on having islands that aren't practically accessible, but it's a bit silly to have some of the most fertile and temperate islands surrounded by sea ice.

It's got a few issues.

1. Does not fully close the top and bottom borders with ice, infact many times it has grassland right at the end of the map.

2. Is not centered. Pretty much every game has a continent that crosses the international date line (or whatever).

3. Is rather inconsistent, some wonderful maps, others awful

Still, it's pretty good.

Try the 70% water setting and the "Wet" climate setting...

I tried the 70% water, it seemed more like 95% water... Me and my ally (Mehmed and Justinian) were on a continent with Willem (who was teamed with Carthage, who we couldn't see anywhere). We were pretty much on the equator and I settled like 10 lovely cities with seafood, dyes, even a gem, while my ally took out Willem (blocked him early, then killed him off with swords + catties.

Later, we found out the entire bunch of AIs (Hannibal plus four other teams consisting of two AIs) were living pretty much on the southpole, with a bit of decent terrain and seafood though. One continent had Hannibal and the team Inca+Spain, other continent had Zara+Asoka (religious mongers), Alexander+Suryavarman (warmongers) and Ramesses+Toku (wondermongers). The game ended up crashing when we had taken out Ramesses / Toku and were fighting Alex/Sury with rifles and cannons against their maces. It minimized due to a security update and when the game popped up again, the abrs were gone (hence I couldnt move or save = 2 wasted hours :wallbash:).

I might have to try the map script out again sometimes later, although I think 60% water fits my style better.

1)I had many complaints about the fact that there was too much ice. Consider the playing field as the "usable" part of Earth. Grassland near the top is a bit excessive indeed, but Greenland is named "green" after all ;).

2)What's the problem with that?

3)It's designed to be very random, so you can't really expect consistent results, particularly on 70% or 60% settings.

For those who discover the script with the patch, there's a thread in the Cration forum here: http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?t=149278
You might also want to check cephalo's PerfectWorld.py, which has great climate and rivers generation.

1. Too much ice isn't really an issue though. The top few tiles and bottom few tiles should always be ice....:D

2. It's irritating for the gameplay. It's hard to see how to develop, your cities get stuck between the line and it's just way easier to have centered continents.

3. I guess ;)

Do you have auto saves?

No, I'm fairly sure all tiles created at the start of a game remain as they are like in continents, pangea, and so on.

I love having mountains in ranges now. I hated having a random buckshot of mountains getting in the way of my city placement.

IMHO this is the best part of the patch. This script is awesome! I'm on my third one now. The first was 70% water wich started me (Roosevelt) and a small island with Boudica. She didn't make it. My island was only large enough for the two cities, eventualy discovered two larger continents far north, One with 4 civs, the other just one. And out to the west, a chain of islands (which, thanks to the increased Barb spawn made promoting my navy very easy . . .).
My second map I used 60% water and ended up with quite possibly the coolest and most diverse Pangea I have ever played. The mountain ranges made for some VERY interisting strategies. My curent map seems to be more like the first one, I've found two other civs on the smallish continent. The terrain this script generates (IMHO) is much more realistic and fun to play than any other script I have played.

I'm really liking it so far, especially on a huge map that's randomly generated. There can be empty land masses of significant size (especially if you draw 60%), or you could end up with a single land mass. I LOVE having to adjust my strategy on the fly as I discover more about my World. In the game I'm playing right now, I'm near the coastline, but have no idea what sort of Navy I'm going to need, so I'll have to explore to figure that out. I'm in a area with heavy flood plains, and forests near by, very few hills, and two of my rivals to the east have a good number of hills, so I'll need to adjust to that as well. This looks like it's going to present some very cool strategic challenges that will change with every game. Nice!

Though it's supposed to simulate tectonic formations, I'm really not seing that much evidence of such on my world (as per attatchments). Still great maps though.

Huge, 18 civs, temperate climate, medium sea.

i like the maps that tectonics generates, but my last 3 games ive started in tundra areas... who would have thought. 3 times!

so i regenerated and finally i have one thats not tundra. pretty sweet.

I think "Earthlike" just means that the Earth's surface is 70% covered by water and 30% dry land. Thus the same proportion holds true in the map if that setting is chosen.

Try Tectonics' own "Earth" option for continents that resemble Earth's.
