Mac GOTM Installers

Needless to say, I use Option 2.
Being both lazy and much more familiar with the Mac-fix you suggested with Option 1, I ditched my Prefs. The game loaded perfectly, as advertised. I think a cavalcade of bowing emoticons is in order:

Thank you Alan.
One more question, if I may: As mentioned, the game loaded perfectly, yet a shiver of terror went down my spine as I noted the difficulty level was set at Emperor!! I was under the impression that my selected "Conquest" level would be equivalent to "Monarch." So, am I correct in assuming that the additional bonus units and gold balance things out, and convert the Emperor level to Monarch?
Anyway, much thanks again Alan!! You're awesome!

Which game file did you load? GOTM27 is the current one, and that should be set to Monarch level. GOTM25was "Demi-god" which used Emperor settings and played at Monarch equivalent if you chose Conquest class. GOTM26 was Deity.

If your start screen doesn't look like this then you probably have the wrong file ...

Whoa! Way off base on my end. Sorry. I was indeed talking about GOTM 25. I saw "new" in reference to GOTM 25 in your Installer Thread (and nothing about 26 or 27), so I just assumed that was the latest Mac game. If I download 26 and 27 from the GOTM site, will I then be up to date? I don't need installers for these two other games as well?

Very sorry for the confusion!

EDITED: I went ahead and just downloaded the GOTM 27 game, and inserted it in my saves folder. Opened the game, and *ta-dah* it looks like I'm in up-to-date business! I'm actually playing a CivFanatics GOTM!

Thanks Alan!!

As you've discovered, you don't have to load old game files before you play the current game, just the previous Installers.

I've updated the first post now with the latest status.

Hi Alan,
I've got a bit of a problem with GOTM 28. When I clicked on the option to download the Conquest Class for PC and Mac, it took me to a page that had nothing but random characters. I tried a few times, but every time the result was the same. Because of this, I can't download the save file. Any suggestions?

I have the same problem: using Safari as my browser; no download starts.

You can right-click the link and download. This occurs when a .sav is the file. Zipped saves download as expected. Also, ainwood linked some zipped GOTM28 saves in the GOTM forum.

Has anyone actually got the file to OPEN within Civ3 GOTM? Using djb's advice, I can get a SAV to my desktop and then into my Save games folder, but my Civ3 GOTM installation won't recognise it.

Thanks, it worked like a charm. I work with blinders at times. One little change in SOP, and I'm lost. Thanks for the straight steer, dojoboy.

@Sid: FYI, I plopped the downloaded save file into my folder and opened it without a problem. Of course, I forgot to trash my prefs at first, but once I did that my GOTM Civ intallation recognized it fine, and opened right up.

I recommend downloading Alan's Civ3 script which, in layman terms, allows d/led save files to be read by the Civ3 app when things are not "just right." Brad Oliver said the final 1.29 patch has this feature coded in.

Thanks djb, I'll go look for it.

I've been playing, so apologies for not being here, but i t looks like you guys have sorted each other out now. Well done.

1. FYI: Browsers doesn't know what a .sav file is, so many, including Safari, try to display it as text. If this ever happens don't panic. Just hit Back and right click (or control click) the download link and select "Download to Disk" or the equivalent. I'm quite surprised that this seems to be a little-known problem and solution, as it happens to me quite regularly and not just with Civ3 .sav files.

2. On Ainwood's request I've zipped the GOTM28 .sav files so the links should now download OK.

3. @Sid: Are you using Mac file dialogs? If so you'll see the .SAV file grayed out in the file list because Civ3 expects it to have the old fashioned Creator and Type tags. You can, as Dojo suggests, use my Civ File Fixer script to add these, or you can drop it into your Saves folder and use the Civ3 native file dialogs which aren't so fussy.

Downloaded the zipped file from the link on ainwood's problems thread a few hours ago...no problems with the .sav file and have been playing with no problems.

Please check out Ainwood's latest post re. the pediaicons.txt file.

If you downloaded the start file before about 08:30 GMT today, and/or didn't replace the pediaicons.txt file in your GOTM25 setup, then you will probably see a question mark in place of Gandhi's face in the F4/diplo screen, and the final victory/defeat ceremony will probably crash. Replace the file and relaunch Civ3 for a trouble-free end-of-game.

Good luck in the game.

Alan, you're right, I'm using the Mac file dialogs. I'll revert. And the pediaicons.txt thing explains a problem I've had for a while.

Thanks a heap (as we say in the local vernacular).

replaced the pediaicon.txt file for the game...uh...the image for Gandhi is supposed to be the Joan of Arc pic, right???????

hi - my osx can't install your GOTM patch - it keeps saying "There was a problem..." what to do?
please help...!

Hi bughouse

Can you open the Installer log window when you get the error, select full information, and copy/paste what you see into a post here or a PM? The error messages you see may even make enough sense for you to work oout what's wrong yourself.

Basically, the installers are looking for a few tell-tale files and folders to check that you have seected a valid folder to install into, so you may see messages saying what's missing.

Also, the installer insists on seeing the text "1.29" in the /Text/version.txt file. If you have installed a mod that changed that (eg the DyP mod) then this will stop the installer in its tracks. You should use the GOTM installers on a previously-clean copy of version 1.29b2.
