Well, interesting!
The script seems to be looking for the folder "Desktop/Civilization III/Civ3_129_b2 Folder/ Art". Note the space before Art. It's not finding it and I'm speculating it's because of the space. However, that's not something you have direct control over, as the script builds the folder names to look for. So I'm confused .

I can't reproduce this behaviour here, and I am running the same OS build as you. I have to do other stuff right now, but I'll try to investigate later and get back to you.

I'm back on the case, but this may take a little while.

Meanwhile, did you check out my alternative drag and drop installer? If you follow the breadcrumbs from teh first post in the sticky installers thread you'll find the installer plus a GOTM23 zipped file set to use with it. After that, if you want to mod up to the latest GOTM state you'll also need the gotm24 and gotm25 file sets.

If you want to pursue this line, let me know and I'll track down the links for those file sets.

HI - So tried the drag n drop - and followed instructions - putting the installer in the Art folder, also I tried other folders, and every time it opened and i Saw the Civ Fanatics logo etc, it said it couldn't find the 1.29 file, even though I made sure to put it in the same folder as the 1.29 installer on one try. I copied what it said below... ?

Sorry. Cannot find Civilization III version 1.29.

That's not actually what the instructions say, unless someone's written some I haven't seen. :hmm:

Let me put it another way:

- Download the drag and drop installer and put it anywhere you like - desktop, home folder, applications ... it doesn't matter, 'cos it's just an application.

- Double click it to launch it.

- When it opens you'll see a window, and the window should list the Civ3 application folders it knows about.

- If there are none listed, which looks like your situation, then it means your Civ3 installation was installed too recently to have been detected and indexed by MacOS X's 'locate' function, or you turn your machine off every night and it never gets a chance to do any housekeeping. In this case, drag your Civ3 application folder onto the window. It should then appear in the window.

- When the folder you want to update is listed in the window then drag and drop the mod file set you wish to install onto its icon. If all is well it should install the files.

Well, I can't reproduce the effect you're seeing with the non-drag'n'drop installers, and I can't think of a mechanism that could cause it .

Looking at long shots, have you customised your terminal login shell parameters at all? If you don't understand the question, then the answer is almost certainly 'no'.

Are you sure you are using the current version of the GOTM 23 installer, linked from the first post here? The reason I ask is that the current version shouldn't be able to produce the log messages you are seeing.

Is that 'yup you are using the current release'? If so I'm *very* confused !!!!! That script can't do that

yes I made sure to use the current release GOTM23 installer. Im sure it's something on my end, nobody else seems to have a problem. Thanks for your patience and help. I don't know what I'm doing wrong...What about this login shell parameter angle? I really have no idea what that is, so its probably the problem(?)

OK, if you're game, open /Applications/Utilities/Terminal.
You should see something like:
Code:
Last login: Tue Jul 6 23:27:40 on ttyp1
Welcome to Darwin!
Alan:~ alan$
... except the date/time will be different and your computer and user names will replace mine. The last line of this sequence is the prompt line and it will appear at the beginning of each new line as you proceed.

Now type the following. Hit return after each line:
Code:
test="hello"
echo $test
This should give the result:
Code:
hello
Now type:
Code:
echo "$test/world"
This should give the result:
Code:
hello/world

If the last line comes up as "hello/ world" (note the space after the slash) then this is what your script log is showing. Let me know your results and we'll take it from there.

You can just quit Terminal when you're done.

BTW, did you make any progress with the drag'n'drop installer?

here is what I got:
Last login: Thu Jul 8 20:58:39 on console
Welcome to Darwin!
204-74-2-31:~ matt$
204-74-2-31:~ matt$ test="hello"
204-74-2-31:~ matt$ echo $test
hello
204-74-2-31:~ matt$ echo "$test/world"
hello/world
204-74-2-31:~ matt$

I note no spaced. The Drag and Drop route I didn't have luck with either.

Hmm! Well, the line echo "$test/world" is a simplified version of exactly how the installer assembles the folder names that it's looking for. So I'm stumped as to why a space appears when the script runs. I'll sleep on it.

What happpens now when you try the drag'n'drop installer? You're not having much luck with my stuff, are you? :(

I download and open the drag n drop, but I can't actually drag the civ 1.29 file into the window - the file/folder doesn't stick there, just snaps back to its original position.

Sorry, I don't know how to make it any clearer:

so - the window opened, I dragged in the folder and it stuck - good news.

I then tried the same thing with the GOTM23 download and it didn't take - it kept saying I already had the files in the folder, but when I would open Civ, nothing would be there. - bad. Is there hopefully a next step?
