Mages on Horseback?

You could always just let Govannon have his way with them for a turn ;)

Since the Mobility promotion is unlocked with Horseback Riding, I always figured that the promotion actually meant that the units were actually going around on horses, or were carried about on chariots. Actual mounted units with the promotion just had better horses.

That's what I thought too, except that they aren't trained to fight while riding horses so they just rode to the battle and dismounted.

Hrm... It could be interesting to create a UU (and Unique Spell) version of Lich for each civilization which is based off of the mana type of that Civilization and makes them a Type appropriate entity. Then instead of a boring generic "extra Archmage slots" unit, you get some good reason to aim for your Civilization's manatype on your first couple of Archies.

Hippus would be a high movement mounted mage, Sheiam a teleporting Djinn, Balseraph a Loki knock-off super-retreater, Lanun a high movement in water Merfolk...

Well, while interesting this would not get into FFH 2 because:

1. Kael doesn't like things like religions and civs (etc) to be the same, and if they all had a UU upgrade for Archmages then that would be too similiar.

2. 20 more new art models needed.

You could add it to Fall further though...

I think he's more of muttering to himself then suggesting it to Kael =D

Muttering to modders in general. I just reccomend things for being placed into the game and write code where needed anymore. Pretty rare I directly add any items to XML or Python anymore (too much debugging and AI to work on!)

and an extra way to really separate the civs.
Maybe mounted mages should be added as UUs to the Hippus and the Amurites? Possibly, the Kahdi (from FF) since they seem to be ruled by a mage/sage? Any1 else think of any other civs?

Well obviously this is all D&D and mages have to use all sorts of stuff (gems, blood...), wave their hands and then say all sorts of magical words to light a small fire. And of course they even have to use some sort of external mana source too. I guess something as uncontrollable as a horse is bad for magi.

But I guess gameplay reasons (balance is an ugly word when it comes to magic and casters) we cannot have archmagi who could obliterate the entire world instantly with a single thought and using only their own power.

I think a UU horseback adept could be bearable, I am against a mage and archmage though (overkill).

I agree, man. We need to think bout balance as well. So, if there's too many UUs for 1 civ, then people complain bout it.

I figured how you could explain mages and archmages not having mounts, their spells are too complex to cast while being bumped up and down on a horse

All these arguments about not casting while riding, or taking a turn to mount and dismount, are fine if you think of turns being jut a few minutes long. But since each turn is probably somewhere between a week and a year, a mage should be able to ride to a battle, dismount, spend a few days casting spells, and get back on his horse.
However, I think this is what the mobility promotions are supposed to represent - you riding a horse around, but not doing anything mounted. Since the Hippus will probably be the first to horseback riding, their mages will probably be the earliest to have the option to take the mobility promotion. Looking at it that way, all civs have the option of putting anyone other than the artilery people on horseback, Hippus just do it earlier.
