I had a light bulb recently with respect to Mapfinder. Not sure if this would be of interest to anyone, but I think it is kinda cool. However, MF may have a problem with it.

So, I've been using Google Drive a lot recently after getting into this past year. For those unfamiliar with it, Google Drive is basically a "cloud" drive (and some other stuff like online "Office" type stuff). In other words, its virtual storage for files and stuff on the internet. I should note also that the Drive can be setup physically on your PC and automatically sync from the cloud to the physical drive.

I haven't used MF in a while, but recently started it up again for the special starts that are hard to find. I have multiple machines, including my primary gaming machine. I tend to run MF on another machine with a copy of Civ so that I can have it run continuously for a long time without impacting whatever I'm doing on another machine.

Google Drive is a nice and quick way of getting saves over to my other PC. I can do this manually and it's no big deal at all. However, if I could change the default MF save folder to my Google drive then all saves would be instantly synced between machines, as they are created.

Problem is that MF does not allow me to change the default drive. So I'm wondering is this an issue that is currently unsolvable or is there a workaround for it. It's not a huge deal since syncing can still be done manually, but it sure would be cool and easy if I could get this to work.

Here's an example of what it looks like:

The image is of my physical google drive on my gaming rig. The saves were synced from my other machine. If you can see it, there are little green checkmarks on each save's icon showing successful syncage.

I manually copied the files from the MF folder on the other machine to that machine's Google drive. However, if I could set up that folder as the default folder for MF then all this would be automatic.

edit: Regardess, some folks might be interested in this Google drive stuff if they run MF on separate machines like I do

I don't think I envisioned using a network share when I coded it. I think I used a standard built-in file prompt to set/change the save folder. But that was years ago. (That's decades in computer years. ;)) It would probably work if you mapped the share to a drive letter.

Google drive isn't a network share and it isn't a 'drive'. It's cloud storage already mapped to a folder, but lymond is saying that MF won't let him change the save directory. It only supports the default dir. I think my suggestion of installing MF on the google drive will put the default save directory where he wants it.

Yep, it's cloud and a physical address on the machine mapped under C:

I'm going to try WT's idea. However, it seems I've done something like that with MF before - mapped to a different location than default on install - for some reason I can't remember - and had to reinstall it normally to work.

I thought some folks might think this might be a nifty option if they run on multiple machines

Well, you could just map your MF save dir to the network and share that way. But that's not quite the same.

Well, true indeed. I don't have a network setup myself. However, with this option you can access it from anywhere.

I use Dropbox as my cloud solution, MF is installed on my D drive under the Dropbox folder and saves are synced automatically over the web. I'm on a business trip for four days this week but can easily see what maps have been generated via the web or the Dropbox app :-)
