MapView 2.0 - Civilization 4 Editor

I'm trying to edit the map made by Carter for his Carter Earth Map mod. Every time I click on a square with a unit placed on it, the editor crashes. Any ideas?

Do you also change the editor to the mod before you edit? If you do/or don't. Does that make any differrence?

Only happening at that specific mod?

If so, only happening on units that are specific to that mod?

Thanks for your prompt reply. I'm not sure my answers will do much good.

I just load the map using the 'Open' button. I'm not sure how I would load the whole mod, although I'm pretty sure the only change it makes is 32 players.

Only mod I have.

Carter Earth doesn't add units, it's basically just a map (a very good one at that) with 32 teams.

To be honest, I really don't understand Map View in the least, but I can't find any detailed instructions. Thanks for your time.

Could you attach that map please please? If you don't want to share it in public you could also send it by mail.

Ok, I couldn't figure out how to send a file by PM so here it is. This is Carter's intellectual property btw, not mine. I'll remove the link when it's served its purpose.

Cheers mate.

I can't seem to open the program. I think my Windows Vista has something to do with it. Should I be putting my files in a specific place? :P I can't figure it out.

So when you try to open MapView but nothing happens?
Basicly MapView doesn't need to be installed or anything, it will just run from any place you extract it to.

I guess you extracted it to a certain folder and try to open it using the executable?

If that's the case you could run the dependecy walker to find out if some required libraries are missing.
http://www.dependencywalker.com/

Well, the program starts to run, then just after, it crashes.

I ran the program you suggested and this came up:

Warning: At least one delay-load dependency module was not found.
Warning: At least one module has an unresolved import due to a missing export function in a delay-load dependent module.

I'll try downloading again and check back

edit:
Ok, so I downloaded it again and I ran the Dependancy Walker on it again, and the same warnings came up. Is it possible that something got lost along the way?

edit2:
Well, I tried to run some other programs that I found through CivFanatics (Blender, civsmith) and the same warnings came up, so I'm guessing it's a problem with my computer or Vista, any suggestions on how to fix this?

The Warning itself does not imply that MapView will crash because of that, i also have 2 missing modules. Could you please save the Dependency Walker Outout as
txt and send that to me?

Hey there,

first I wanna thank you for this awesome tool, which is not only powerful but also easy and intuitively to use. But since i'm not a pro modder, some problems occured.

I've downloaded this map...

GiantEarth by Genghis Kai

...which I think is very good. I just planned on doing some changes on the nations and their starting positions with your tool, but it turned out not to function, like supposed to. What I basically did, was deleting all units and then trying to place new units for the different nations, but when I started the game, the nations still had the same starting positions. For example, I placed the British settlers somewhere around Canada and they still started in area around London, despite the fact I've deleted them before.

I also would like to be abble to choose the nations I play with, which isn't possible by default.

Any chance you can tell me how this works?

Thanks.

Glad you like it, even if it's not perfect.

You can't edit starting positions with MapView ;// It's in the making tho.

But it's not hard to do it by hand, just open the Map with your favorite text editor and look into the BeginPlayer section, you should find something like:
Code:
StartingX=181, StartingY=62
That should be the place where you need to do your changes.

The civs on this map don't start with cities, but instead with a settler and scout unit. So I somehow got it managed to change their positions. But what I really want to achieve, is, to get rid of two civs, that make expansion in Europe impossible, namely the Dutchs and Hungarians. The problem is, I can't find a way to change thoose two civs into some others, because only 36 are available.

If nothing works i'm going to ban thoose two civs on a lonely island somewhere in the Pacific Ocean...

GreyHound, is there anyway you can do a quick patch and include rotate layer 90 degrees? Not sure if that's easy to add or not? I really, really need it for this weekend multiplayer LAN game custom map. Pretty please! :-)

I am not able to provide a working plugin for that right now since so many dependencies have changed in the meanwhilew!

.... but ..... if you send me the file, i might be able to to it manually for you. PM Me

I never tested "below sea level" but as far as I remember (at work now) "peak" behaved the same way.

The odd thing was that sometimes placing a Hill would register immediatly (or within one or two clicks) but then maybe after placing 2 or three Hills suddently it would not seem to respond. But if I kept clicking with my mouse repeadtly eventually (sometimes spamming the left click 20-30 times) a Hill would be placed. It seemed that it was always easiest to use the Hill tool the first time.

Clicking individually NEVER works for me... I always have to click and then hold and drag the cursor to "paint" the hills onto the map.... the hills only appear when the mouse is dragged across the squares... (most likely mouse is moving slightly once you get to 20 clicks which makes the hills appear)

GREAT TOOL! Makes life MUCH easier when working with my maps... (I may even try making a mod now)

any chance we can get the default save option to go to BTS-type? Or make it configurable? Or at least remove the default type filter so that all files are shown instead of civ4 only... having to click save type every single time is starting to get maddening

Yeah, most changes will only apply when the mouse is dragged. I already considered changing that, but for now you need to move the mouse a little to apply the change.

Basicly most of the BTS depending saves are done when you select the BTS file extension. I noted the idea, i can especially imagine to offer/remember the type that type when the map was opened.

selecting the BTS file extension is what is killing me :) i save VERY often... every single time i save (about every 5 minutes) i have to select the file type to find my file (default is civ4 file type)... then save the file with a new version letter at the end (so if i make a mistake i can just go back to previous versions of my map build without having to erase everything by hand)

thanks for making a note to see if you can figure out a solution :)
