March Patch Notes (formerly february)

The main thing I want is for the multiplayer disconnects to be fixed. And I hope eventually multiplayer animations are added back in and perhaps leaderheads. I bought it mainly for multiplayer but it's unplayable based on the three or more LAN games I tried that all led to unavoidable disconnects.

Patch seems good and I am looking forward to it. Most of the changes are good and I am glad that the mod builders are showing the way. Thanks Thal and the rest! :) I am releived that there is some love going around here in Civ 5 forum and not only negativ comments.

Hopefully they are getting Civ 5 more stable and balanced. I'd love to see the dll coming out as soon as possible.

Policies
Tradition: Culture border expansion discount in cities placed on Tradition branch opener. Discount increases over the course of the game. Also grants +3 Culture in the capital.

Does this mean culture border expansion only for Cities allready built upon the aquisition of the tradition branch policy opener, or could it mean exactly the opposite?

Legalism: Provides a free Culture building in your first 4 cities.

Sounds fantastic - this would be a monument I presume! If we have built a monument, will we be provided with a free temple or do we forfeit the free buildings?

I'd just like to point out how wrong you are here.

This is a forum meant for people to discuss this game. Usually that means people that play or want to play the game, not people that have little else to do but bash it.

It's like going to a "Hunting" forum and posting stuff like "Hunting is bad" , "Don't hurt the animals", "Hunting is so boring" etc...
Of course people are going to not like you very much. I do hope you see the point.
You mention you like CiV4 a lot more ? There are special CiV4 boards, please go and talk to the people there.

I completely agree with your post. I have not seen a single poster claim that Civ V is perfect. Not a single one. But many people think it is an enjoyable game worth playing, and improving with every patch; and there will be more patches. As for Civ VI, if it ever appears it will be 5 or 6 years from now. Let's have some fun while waiting for the Messiah.

I'm puzzled by the scorched earth policies of certain posters who dislike Civ V. Disliking it is their right. and to keep talking about it is of course also something they are entitled to. It just seems so meaningless. Because surely it can't simply be a wish to spoil everybody else's fun?

Moderator Action: That last sentence is trolling. If you cannot stay civil even after the thread has been warned twice you will be infracted.
Please read the forum rules: http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?t=422889

Moderator Action: Back on topic, thanks. Don't respond to a flaming/trolling post - just report it instead.

How do we actually report anything straight from a thread or the post in question?
Cuz, i do not see a specific button for such quick and easy contacts with moderating staff.
I must be blind.

In your line of work, how much can be done by a small team of developers in one month? Because that's how often patches are showing up. I'm asking because in my line of work 8 to 16 is usually meetings and phone calls with maybe 3-4 hours of effective "sitting in front of the PC". Considering how many changes and upgrades they did to this game already, I'd say they are doing just fine (and under a lot of pressure, obviously).

ok, while I generally agree with some of the comments you've made so far (not talking about them to ensure not continued flame war) this one is a bit off.

My teams can do far more than what was produced within a month. They have high levels of communication with all involved and still get the job done. Not just because they are good at their jobs, but because the management team around them (+organization) has taken their anti-psychotics and is marching to the same beat as the dev/QA group. (which is only 7-9 people/group) It's an organizational problem, not a quality of dev. problem.

I'll leave my comments about who was actually at fault for my blog... don't want to continue a flame war here.

Patchwise, to get back on topic, I see a lot of changes that people wanted; balance wise. There's good and bad to that, but realistically, the core issues are still the 'not sexy' ones but have to be done to get the game out of beta.

So am i.
But i highly doubt this will happen anytime soon for fairly good reasons;

-- New Lead Designer has to reassert all basic "concepts" into a coherent approach to what needs urgent attention and then, coordinate fully tested, focused and valid fixes.
-- Limited staff at Firaxis (sure everyone heard of the terrible layoffs last year) can't do much more than they already are or have. That delays progress on wide range implications.
-- 2K real intentions? Nobody really knows what they "will" decide long term. Certainly seems that *a* commitment to support CiV to its completion or some valid gameplay final state is there (as proven by posts from Greg & Eliz, etc) on their Forums.

I really don't see (to be somehow rational) a DLL coming before a hugely stable version is out if -sadly- ever. Six months, maybe a few more.

I am always such a hopefull optimistic. I say the dll comes before summer. :) Until then I guess 1 or 2 more patches will be released.

Could anyone tell me which Of Thal's mods they based the new patch on? I'd like to download them and try them out!

To say they based it on Thal's mod is exaggerating. However, they made many changes already in his mod. And there are plenty more that are useful enough to come in later patches. Try Thal's Balance - Combined mod... as well as some other mods that he recommends alongside, like Sneaks' What Would Gandhi Do?

Funny, now I can no longer delete game files from the menu.... I click on the file, then click "delete", then confirm I really want to delete the file and the file is still there....

Stability seems to have improved, the game still hangs (though less often).

Late to this discussion but I had to sleep...

Several others are correct. Each city contributes a %increase to the cost of any future policies, and this policy reduces that %increase.

This is terribly, terribly wrong.

Personally, I see it this way: Without an underlying balance to the game, the rest is meaningless. The AI can't handle 1upt? What does that matter when you can exploit the game in a dozen different ways anyway and are guaranteed a win?

To use your broken leg analogy... To me, they've just stitched up the stab wound in your back. Sure, your leg is still broken, but this was rather more important as a first step.

Fair enough. I certainly do appreciate your contributions in making this game better. Rise from Erebus is still one of my favourite mods and I'm happy the Devs are paying attention to you and other talented community members.

It obviously has a long way to go but I suppose you have to start somewhere. Building a mountain and all that. The AI, if it is ever fixed at all with require a lot of time and money on Firaxis' part. Hopefully 2K Games does the right thing.

I guess my analogy could use some revision. Fixing the stab wound in the back has ensured the patient won't die on the operating table by bleeding to death. If the patient dies then that will rule out any future offspring. (ie. Civ VI)

The leg still needs attending to though. Hopefully they will have news on that front too. I'm not optimistic though since it won't be a quick fix. Hope Firaxis and 2K Games show they are in for the long haul.

Exactly right. This is the forum to discuss the game. Nowhere does it say that you have to like or love the game. If people who didn't like the game truly didn't give a damn about the series, they wouldn't bother coming here at all. Believe it or not, we post because we care.

I don't want these forums to operate like a one party state where only one opinion is valid. A bunch of yes men (or women) will only lead to disastrous results for the game and the series.

Quote--Does this mean culture border expansion only for Cities allready built upon the aquisition of the tradition branch policy opener, or could it mean exactly the opposite?

I think the announcement is just badly worded. I think what they were trying to say is:

A culture border expansion discount in cities has been placed on Tradition branch opener. Discount increases over the course of the game. Also grants +3 Culture in the capital.

So, I think it means that if you choose Tradition, the branch openinig benefit will be a tile expansion discount in all cities that increases over time and +3 culture in the Capital.

Lets see... The bulk of these changes I see are almost verbatim taken from the more popular balance mods. The AI is unchanged and thus still a joke that can't handle its armies and has no grasp of terrain type, flanking, or support. No pitboss mentioned (Top priority ey?) and no hotseat, though im not suprised about either. The Civopedia is aparently still unchanged and useless, thank god you can use the steam overlay's web browser to search for what things do or what their exact %s are still I guess. Multiplayer is basically unchanged and thus worthless still.

The good I see is basically unquantified. "Significant Speedup on Turns" How significant? In what situations? Are we including city states on or just Average sized maps only with default number of AI? "Additional bug fixes and tweaks." Would it have killed you to have mentioned what these are, I doubt you were so busy you couldn't. Then you got things like "Forge adds +1 production to each source of Iron" ... Is that a cumulative? Flat change? Again.. Writing the whole 5 more words to clarify which would have been nice.

So overall, this patch leaves no less then 4 major multiplayer expoits (and that's just the ones I know of without researching how many their actually are) in the game, several things that needed nerfing like research agreements (which is now ever worse). No features people actually wanted like multiplayer animations, or mods made it in but hey! We can use DLC nations in multi, the 2 months were clearly worth the wait.
