March Patch Notes (formerly february)

Diplomacy pretty much felt identical to past iterations. If anything it felt even more silly, thanks to DoFs and denouncements ending, and causing every 50 turns to entirely shake up alliances and such. You could have had 3 50 turn DoFs with someone, and on expiration they might entirely refuse to refresh the friendship and turn against you a few turns later.

But isn't that the idea - that after a certain amount of time, you could decide to go a different route? Isn't the alternative game-long DoF's?

Well, if you look at the guy's history, he did go to war with his own monarch...

He can be a pretty scary guy in Civ V. So nice in the beginning, a "friend of liberty" and all, but he is not a trustworthy ally imo. Abe Lincoln in previous Civ games was not any better, famous for the sneak attack. So, you learn to have a strong army around both.

Did I say otherwise? I was alluding to the fact that he's historically the type to be willing to attack "friends" or people who were at one point. Few leaders in Civ can make a claim that they essentially went to war with their own country, rebelling against their legally recognized government to create a new one. As such, he seems kind of an ideal candidate for turning on "allies."

No, I was agreeing with you and adding some additional info :)

In general, people who complain that alliances shift too quickly in Civ5 should look into a bit more history. For example France fought with the Netherlands against England in 1666-1667, and then just 5 years later fought with England against the Netherlands. In more recent times, Italy had a treaty with Germany and Austria before WWI, fought against them in the war anyway, and then joined with them in WWII.

Speaking of WWII, Germany and Russia are buds when they attack and subdivide Poland, then a few years later, Germany attacks.

So, you CAN make hydro plants without a factory (coal). Hydro plants now give one production per river tile. If you have horses, cows or sheep along a river with a stable thats pretty slick.

The game seems to have many more nuances now that have to be taken into account. In some cases, with some leaders, it really does change the game. One thing I've noticed is that a lot of the stuff in Tradition and Liberty are very much more useful in the beginning of the game, not so much in the late stages of the game.

Isn't that what hydro plants always did?

Actually, I don't know. Never built a lot of them before. But the patch notes said that solar and hydro plants couldn't be built without a factory, and in a game I was just playing, it let me build hydro plants without a factory. I was playing on a duel continents map just to check things out, and my little continent didn't have any coal, but had aluminum.

I'm in my first game post patch and started a game in the Future Era and it notified me that I was at war with Washington because he attacked Arabia. I never signed a Defensive Pact with Arabia because when I went into the Diplomacy screen with them, the "Defensive Pact" option was available. Is there something I missed with this patch or is it a bug?

No it said solar and nuclear plants require factories, not hydro ;)

Has anyone tested this with any popular Mods? (ie. CCMAT 2, LEM, etc)

LEM is in need of a much needed update which I will be getting out after some testing with the new patch. :) I was already in the process of doing as much a couple of months ago, but got distracted by a variety of other things.

CCMAT 2 probably does not work well right now. It probably does not crash the game, but don't be shocked to see a broken text strings all over the joint and some messy icons.

If you do decide to give it a try, please post in the CCMAT 2 forum so I know what bugs to hunt down and fix.

I am glad for the new options, but it appears (have not checked the code) that civs do not remember past DoFs or take them into account. Same goes for denounces. The result is an AI that seems as crazy as ever, and still not enjoyable to play with.

One general thought for everyone:
Do you like the AI system of disliking people going for the same victory type as them, or would you prefer the system to be the opposite - AI more likely to be friends with people going after similar victory types.

K, playing first game with the patch. Here are some odd things I've noticed, tell me if it's the patch or just a strange game. This is on king:

1-- the AI seems to have developed sudden onset fetal alcohol syndrome. Like, more than usual. Huge continent, me and two AI's. I spam cities and get ready for war. I have 6 cities, longswords, and Mandekalus. The AI-- both of them-- have two cities each and no worker improvements. Seriously, no worker improvements.

2-- Someone tried to DoF with me and I said no. However many turns later I'm told my DoF with that civ had just expired. Is this a bug, or did I just hit the wrong button and not notice?

Oh, I've also seen those atolls that were mentioned and unmentioned awhile ago. Good addition.

I would rather it not matter at all.

Dislike, since they are legitimately competing.

That reminds me of my FAVORITE post patch AI moments thus far.

Augustus offers me Open Borders for Open Borders.
I click Accept.
Augustus tells me the deal is unacceptable and I need to offer more.
It turns out that by Open Borders he meant that plus 20 gold.

This has happened 3 times now.
