Master of Magic MOD - In Progress

The name Master of Magic is not copyrighted (it can't be - you cannot copyright words, only logos). They cannot prevent you from using it. It is trademarked, which means you can't profit from it or use it in a manner that harms the trademark owner.

Note: I posted part of this in the other MoM thread.

I just couldn't resist posting this idea... If you can use a modified great person to cast spells and mod it so that using it powers doesn't use up the unit... You have an instant Wizard or hero... Different types of great people could be wizards from different schools of magic.

This would add several very interesting aspects to the game.
1. This would limit the amount of wizards, heroes or magic-using units you could build.
2. It would require them to be guarded from physical attack by normal units (So they aren't too uber-powerful).
3. This would lead to stacks of units lead by a wizard general.
4. It would probably lead to players specializing their cities to persue a certain school of magic.

Another idea is to have religions replaced by schools of magic. A great sage (missionary) would allow you to spread the knowledge of this new school of magic to other cities. Once a city has that school of magic it would be able to build magical units from that line of magic. You could even allow bigger and more powerful units to be built once the build a bigger temple or mage tower (Wouldn't that be a nice city graphic :) )

Of course you would probably want to severly limit the amount that this new "religion" spreads on it's own to prevent your opponents from getting it.

BTW, my apologies if my info about MoM is inaccurate... the last time I played MoM was almost a decade ago.

Updated :)

Notice that they don't use propriatary names within the mod's name. I've known non profit projects that have gone under because they used proprietary names (or even proprietary art, so beware). There's no problem saying that it's a master of magic mod, but calling it the "Master of Magic" mod IS a problem. There's plenty of fans out there who would like to see Master of Magic make a comeback, but because Master of Orion 3 flopped, we will likely never see a Master of Magic 2. The copyright on it's huge, and Atari probably wouldn't take this lying down (they just lost Civ, so any money that they could get, like from lawsuits, would be helpful).

I'll probably change the name towards the end of the mod. But at the moment, for ease of explanation it's remaining as master of magic :P

First screenshot available!!! This is the wizards tower in game :)

How are you gonna get any units done?

Not sure what you mean exactly... lol

I'll be doing the units as normal units.. with different races having different promotions to allow for the differences that were in the original MOM.

I've got a calculation for the strength of each unit based on the original stats from MOM.

It will be
Stack size * Melee Strength * (HP / 2)

Some examples.
Standard Units
Elven Lords
Stack 4
Strength 5
Hits 3
CIV4 Stat 30

Swordsmen
Stack 6
Strength 3
Hits 1
CIV4 Stat 9

Stag Beetle
Stack 1
Strength 15
Hits 20
CIV4 Stat 150

Spearmen
Stack 8
Strength 1
Hits 1
CIV4 Stat 4

Pegasi
Stack 2
Strength 5
Hits 5
CIV4 Stat 25

Paladins
Stack 4
Strength 6
Hits 4
CIV4 Stat 48

Halberdiers
Stack 6
Strength 4
Hits 1
CIV4 Stat 12

Summoned Units
Colossus
Stack 1
Strength 20
Hits 30
CIV4 Stat 300

Death Knights
Stack 4
Strength 7
Hits 8
CIV4 Stat 112

Great Wyrm
Stack 1
Strength 25
Hits 45
CIV4 Stat 563

Fire Elemental
Stack 1
Strength 12
Hits 10
CIV4 Stat 60

Ranged units such as magicians will have weak strength yes, but they will make up for that by having ranged attacks. Which can hit 1 square away without getting into combat. When I can code it :P

I may still have to make a few adjustments for balance. But mostly it should be fine. Especially with the promotion bonuses.

I.e if a paladin had the promotion of lion heart which will end up probably increasing strength by 300%, he would be 144 strength. Add to that elemental armour, to increase defense vs nature by 200%, str would be 288, which is more than enough to take out other high value units.

This mod WILL have very high numbers, and alot of variation. Meaning that promotions will be critical in this game.

Keep in mind also, that you will be able to cast spells from any of your cities allowing you to severely damage any units coming to attack you, or any units you are attacking.

This is also not taking into account racial specific changes or any other promotions, such as first strike, etc.

Also take into account that the high strength units will be INCREDIBLY expensive. So make them at your own risk :P

Sounds like a good plan. It'll be interesting to see what the stag beetle unit is. :)

The Wizard's Tower looks good btw.

I ment the unit graphics..... sorry

Oh.. unit graphics will be stock units until we can edit the graphics :P

I'll probably be requesting the graphics because I don't think I'll be able to do them.

A thought on tech trees:

Each civilization has a couple of starting techs, which are normally things that anyone could research at a very low cost. However, there's nothing preventing you from giving the basic civs technologies that were difficult or impossible to research on their own.

So the Draconian Civilization can begin play with the technologies of "Life Spell Book" and "Chaos Spell Book" that allow them to research Life and Chaos spells respectively. Meanwhile, if you started play as Kali you'd have the technologies of "Death Spell Book" and "Sorcery Spell Book" instead. Researching the other spell book technologies could be impossible or simply incredibly expensive, depending upon whether you wanted players to be able to escape their starting setups or not.

Meanwhile, the "Arcane" spells are researchable without having any of the "spell book" techs, so Dispel Magic is going to be available to all.

---

So you don't really need to program a not-gate to make the Master of Magic research system work.

Do it, would love to see a MoM mod, perhaps i can help with graphics later. well is there a way to spend culture in civ4 (sorry for asking, i mod more than i play ;) ) for anything? i thought it just grows, until an opposite city has more... something like this...

yes I know I havn't posted in some time regarding this :)

I've been a bit bogged down lately with work & stuff.

But I have a new screenshot for everyone showing a city.

Hopefully you enjoy and it might get people a little more interested hehehe.

I am still looking for someone who is good with python and someone good with graphics that I can collaborate with, I'm fine with the xml editing & general mod planning, but not so good with python & graphics.

Any help will be appreciated!

Great looking city Taranthor. Sadly I'm no help since I can't do python or graphics either.

i am very busy with doing the graphics for the wawrhammer fb mod (well units only at the moment), so if u see a model or unit u like and think it could simply need another texture (skin) then it wont be a problem doing it, or perhaps u can use some of the graphics directly until i do more MoM appropriate units, i like modding Graphics, and i would like to see a MoM mod, the only thing that will be missing is that nice extra combat map :( if anyone can get a trick on doing it anyway (perhaps transferring units into other part (seperate "island" of map, where on every mapsquare only one unit can be, we would have something like it....), ok, survivers have to be transferred back too ;) but i think it could be possible ;) not that u have enough to do right now, just an idea ;)

I know this thread is old... But has there been any progress made on this master of magic mod? Or any master of magic mod?

I love master of magic... Would like to see it as a mod for Civ 4

For fantasy I'd check Fall from Heaven II and Warhammer Fantasy Battles.

It would be kind of cool if someone revived this as a skinning of FFH2.

I really like the city pic, reminds me of the original game with all the buildings showing at a glance.
