Math02: 100K with limited cities

I found this at another civ3 forum and I felt it pertained to us since we're playing the Spanish.

On the surface, Spain's Unique Unit, the Conquistador looks very weak. By the time they become available to you, you'll most likely have traded world maps with all Civilizations. If not, then an unarmed explorer will usually be fine, unless you're explorer a mass of territory with barbarians, which is highly unlikely, barring an extremely large map.

However, there is a golden hidden benefit to this unit that can only be utilized if you know how to use it correctly. By following a few simple steps, any AI you at at war with can be completely crippled:

1. Throughout your glorious conquests and wars, build an army. If you have already filled that army, build the military academy, and then another army. In this army, place one Conquistador.
2. You will not use this unit for combat, so there is no reason to pay extra shields to have a strong force in it.
3. This army will be all terrain is road, and will have three movement; meaning it can move nine tiles on land a turn, regarless of terrain. It will also be able to pillage without the loss of a movement point.
4. Move this army into enemy territory, and pillage away! You'll be able to pillage nine tiles a turn (including the one you start on), and be sitting on a fresh tile for the next turn.
5. Always protect your army with either a large stack of defensive unit, or an army of defensive units.
6. When pillaging, make sure to plan ahead. You want to come back in a circle each turn so that your one move defensive units (two move in the age of modern armours or if you are using an infantry or rifleman army) to be able to move onto your new square to protect your army.
7. Using this strategy, you'll be able to quickly and easily cut off each AI city from resources, cripple their production, and cut off all resources.

Since I quoted him I feel I should credit the source.

A Conquistador pillaging army is something I've always wanted to try...maybe we'll be able to do that.

I had a nice idea. Get peace with Viks or Persia (whichever will do it cheapest), then ally the peaceful one against the other. I always do this in my single player games...let them tear each other apart. The only possible consequence for this game is if one started to dominate the other, in which case, we could help the weaker on out a little bit. :satan:

Yeah, a MA. Since they are neighbors, 97% of the fighting will be over there, killing each other and whatnot. We would only have a few invasion ships ever reach us.

We can keep this war between them going until the end of the game to slow them down...in fact starting a "fake war" with Maya vs. Ottos would be nice too. :mischief: ...just for fun.

Looking at the save:

Both the Ottomans and the Vikings have planted a city on our continent. Since we’re at war with the Vikings I suggest we raze that city immediately. I also suggest we position units near the coast to keep the other AI’s off our continent.

Barcelona needs to start a pre-build for a stock exchange. The other 60+ spt cities need to start their pre-build next turn.

Persia is willing to sign peace for 20 gold. The Vikings are willing to for 100 gold. I see no reason not too.

Another option is the Vikings are willing to sign peace and a MA versus the Persians for around 575 gold. The Persians are willing to sign peace and a MA versus the Vikings for around 525 gold. Both Persia and the Vikings are the two toughest AI’s so it could be very beneficial.

America is still 2nd in the culture race so we seem to be fine there.

True, in fact originally one of the AI's wanted Sanitation and the other wanted Steam Power (I think). I figured with the money we're making we'd go cash instead. Don't really know which is better.

Does anyone else have an opinion on this? IMO I believe going the MA route would be best and just hope that one of them doesn't get the upper hand.

@Mathias: Let me know if you're taking it or else I'll play when I wake up this afternoon.

Go ahead with it, Methos. I'm a little busy getting ready for this weekend. I'll play tomorrow morning or early afternoon.

Scandinavia vs Persia sounds like a good idea. I would get peace with Persia, then ally with them against the Vikings. These MUST be on separate trades. Paying with gold would be preferable.

We are importing luxuries from both the Mayans and the Ottomans. Neither are anywhere near becoming even a potential threat. Let them live in peace.

Pre-Turn: Do a little trading:
Persia: We get peace; we give 20 gold
Persia: We get MA versus the Vikings; we give 546 gold

Barcelona switches to Hydro plant (pre-build for stock).

IT: Viking frigate flees.

1@1355 AD: Our frigate dies attacking a Vikings frigate. Seville, Toledo, Santiago, Murcia, and Madrid all switch to pre-builds for Stock.

IT: America and Persia sign an MA against the Vikings. Korea and America sign peace with each other.
America_Persia.JPG

2@1360 AD: Elite cav takes out berserker, loses 1 hp. Vikings are ready to talk peace so I send a small force up to their city on our landmass for, uh, ‘talks’.

IT: Viking horsy takes our American slave who was wondering around in Korea.

3@1365 AD: I ‘talk’ with the Viking city of Batsfjord.
Batsfjord.JPG

Send one of our armies to take out their horsy.

4@1370 AD: Zzzz

IT: Korea gives territory map and 3 gold for our territory map.

Corporation>Refining. We switch everyone except Valencia to Stock Exchange.

IT: Madrid Stock Exchange>Civil Defense. Seville Stock Exchange>Civil Defense. Toledo Stock Exchange>Civil Defense. Santiago Stock Exchange>Civil Defense. Murcia Stock Exchange>Civil Defense.

5@1375 AD: Vet cav falls to elite vik ac. Another vet cav finishes elite vik ac. (Whoops, didn’t realize it was an elite).

IT: Barcelona Stock Exchange>Civil Defense.

6@1380 AD: Move our trebs down and throw a few stones at some passing vik ships. Follow up with our own ships and sink a galley and a frigate.

IT: Vik ships land two ancient cavs, a berserker, and a horseman off of Valencia.

Seville Civil Defense>Wall Street. Toledo Civil Defense>Infantry. Santiago Civil Defense>Arty. Murcia CD>Infantry.

7@1385 AD: Throw some stones. Our army takes out a berserker and two ancient cavs. Our elite cav takes out the horse. Upgrade nine muskets to infantry.

IT: Madrid CD>Frigate.

8@1390 AD: Upgrade our trebs. Due a little bombarding on a vik elite ship than attack with one of our elite frigates and get sunk! Finish the 1 hp vik ship with a galleon.

9@1395 AD: Zzzz

10@1400 AD: Shoot some arty at a vik ship than take it out with our elite frigate.

Note: There is one large stack of slaves on the mountain (40) just relaxing. I would suggest maybe moving them to Salamanca and begin converting some of the watered tiles to mines. Salamanca is at pop 21 and growing rapidly. I also have 3 stacks of workers (12 each) spread out in our territory for clearing pollution. They are not on auto as I prefer to do it manually. On average I’d say pollution every other turn. I had one each the first two turns than three on the third turn. Nothing since.

I’m switched several scientist to taxmen so we don’t waste beakers. Make sure to change them back once Refining is learned (next turn).

The Vikings have been sending ships our way rather often so I suggest using the arty to bombard them from the coast than finish them off with our own fleet.

Sorry about my notes. Towards the end I quit noting what city built what. Currently everything is on wealth except Seville which is building Wall Street.

No worries, Methos. I can understand being a little sloppy in this game with how well set up we are. But, uh, care to post the save? :p

Mathias, if you want to jump in here with your turn, go right ahead.

I don't think we should turn irrigation to mines: research has higher priority then production now (we need to get to modern age wonders quickly), let's have more scientists. We may build some mines once we are modern to build those wonders.

During my turnset, I tried to build more mines that irrigation in an effort to keep the city size @ 21 and maximize production. Granted most of the production was turned into wealth, which in turn boosted the science slider.

It's hard to say if reIrrigating things would have that big of an impact, it probably couldn't cut too many turns of science, but to me it would be annoying to reIrrigate, and then mine again in the MA.

Ratio for wealth is 4 shields -> 1 coin IIRC, which mean 1/2 a coin from a tile on average, but the ratio for a scientist is 1 tile -> 3 beakers (one tile gives 4 food to support the labourer on that tile and a scientist).

Wealth is 4 to 1 before Economics, 2 to 1 after economics. A mine gives 2 shields (with railroad) which is increased by a factory and power plant to give us 4 shields (converted to 2 gold with wealth). Irrigation would instead give us two food, supporting a specialist to give us 2 gold, 3 beakers, 2 shields, or +1 base shield and +1 base commerce (the effect of a policeman on corruption and waste).

The cities which are not going to build the modern wonders should be maxed out in population. Those that will build the wonders need to have production suitable for the task.

I've got it. Will report this evening.

Worker from Valencia joins Seville

Valencia is at size 20 with maximum production of 90 shields per turn, just shy of the 91 needed for 11-turn modern wonders. A police station will get us there. Toledo and/or Murcia could also be set up for high production

Madrid and Salamanca are at 32 shields per turn for 3-turn destroyers or 5-turns cruisers. Prebuild commercial docks next turn.

Our four galleons can be upgraded to transports for 150 gold each. If we want to build more transports, we would need to increase production so that we could build one in three turns.

Scandinavia is again second in culture, currently generating 164 culture per turn. That's about 56% of our 293 culture per turn. Assuming that these rates don't change, it would take us 222 turns to reach 100K and the Vikings 224 turns to reach 50K. New culture and culture doubling will of course affect this. Persia seems to have the upper hand in the war, so I'm not too concerned with Scandinavian culture. We should still start building tanks...

To keep our workers busy, we can clear the jungles and plant forests in the unused areas of our territory.

So are we going to stay at all irrigation (except for Valencia) until the MA?
Our culture cities by rank:

1. Madrid
2. Barcelona
3. Seville
4. Toledo
5. Murcia
6. Salamanca
7. Santiago
8. Valencia

Seems the bottom three should gear up for production. I'll play tonight/morning.
