Background: Various wars in lands to the south made Canada a draw for European immigrants to the Western Hemisphere. In the 1960s, however, one of those wars spilled too far north, resulting in the loss of Quebec and the establishment of an entrenched dictatorship in the remainder of the independent nation. Ties with Britain have been repudiated; the wealthy Canadian elites prefer the doctrine of self-help.
CWOH Commonwealth/Julius Gandi

Army: 10 divisions
Navy: 10 squadrons

Background: What is now known as the Californian-Washington-Oregon-Hawaiian Commonwealth was long the most fought-over bit of real estate in North America, with colonial powers like Spain, Britain, and Russia attempting to keep the land from gravitating towards Texas, Mexico, or the Atlantic Kingdom. At various times, CWOH was occupied by each of the aforementioned countries, but in the 1940s, an agreement was finally reached to let the highly diverse population of the region (First Nations, Asians, Spanish and English speakers) decide for themselves. The establishment of CWOH was followed by another continental war in the 1960s, but the nascent state survived, and today prospers after a fashion.
Atlantic Kingdom/Nuclear kid

Army: 10 divisions
Navy: 10 squadrons

Background: Since its 1783 independence from Britain, the Atlantic Kingdom has been the worst kind of unstable nation—the sort with enough latent power to force its troubles on its neighbors. In the almost three hundred years that the Washington dynasty has ruled from their namesake capital, hardly a month has gone by where there was not some sort of uprising, pseudo-revolution, or foreign intervention going on somewhere. In the 1860s, the so-called Southern Confederacy achieved independence, but two decades later, Washingtonian forces dragged the rebel state back into the unpleasant union.

Background: English-speakers in Texas rebelled from Mexico in the 1830s but never even considered joining the Atlantic Kingdom. In the 1870s, after a long line of treaties, Texas bought the last of Louisiana from France, achieving both a border with and rough parity to the AK, laying the ground work for almost two centuries of war scares, wars, and other brotherly tensions.

Army: 10 divisions
Navy: 10 squadrons

Background: The Republic of the Caribbean is the sort of country that wasn’t supposed to exist, a rising third world economic star with a world-renowned democratic tradition. Immediately after the Caribbean’s federation and independence in 2003, Mexico attacked, but the crafty Caribs turned the tables and succeeded in annexing the former Mexican puppet state of Panama by the Treaty of Havana after a war of only a few months. Today, the Caribbean enjoys a phenomenal reputation, but Mexico is hungry for revenge…
Inca Republic/NPC

Techs: None
Army: 10 divisions
Navy: 10 squadrons

Background: The Depression of 2014 created political space for the rise of Reza Eghtedar and his Partido Solidaridad Nacional. Reza, who became president of Ecuador two years into the crisis, predicated his rhetoric on the idea that the current South America system was corrupt and broken. Only great sacrifice would allow a return to former glories. Negotiations with the PSN branch in Peru created one state, the Inca Republic, and from his capital in Quito, Reza warred with the reticent Colombians until they accepted annexation in 2025. Today, much like his ideological opposite number in Germany, Reza is old and not quite as robust as he once was, but if all goes well, an appropriate successor will pick up the torch and end the chronic underrating of the Republic in the court of world opinion.
Brazil/NPC

Techs: None
Army: 10 divisions
Navy: 10 squadrons
Air Force: 10 groups
Background: Brazil, much like Mexico, was once a great deal more impressive than it is today. Centuries of catering to coffee and sugar barons slowed Brazil’s economy, leaving the old continental hegemon in an increasingly dependent relationship with trade partners in the northern hemisphere. Recent wars with the Union of Patagonia over now-dead border countries like Bolivia and Paraguay saw Brazil expand quite despite itself, but the government is standing on a house of cards. The PSN has an increasing number of supporters in Brazil’s western regions.

Background: With the growing strength of the Brazilian state in the early part of the millennium, many of the nations of South America attempted to take measures to challenge their Portuguese neighbor. In 2025, the nations of Argentina and Chile, long believed to be the second and third most powerful states on the continent, joined together to form the Union of Patagonia. The following years were known for the wars between the two nations, which led the absorption of the Uruguayan and Paraguayan states. A war fought over control of Bolivia quickly spiraled out of control and saw the invasions of both Brazil and Patagonia by each others’ armies. By the beginning of 2040, a peace was made establishing a new border along the Paraguay-Paraná River. Patagonia and Brazil now stand neck and neck in terms of economic and military power, a huge difference from the one-sidedness of nearly forty years ago.

Background: Unrest in the 1990s threatened to topple F. W. de Klerk’s government until a terror campaign against whites and blacks alike in the name of Workers’ Revolution convinced the African National Congress that the regime they knew was the lesser of two evils. In the decades that followed, the shadow of Arab socialists in USACS has proven just enough to maintain Apartheid South Africa’s existence. As long as the government in Cape Town doles out benefits each year to the increasingly rightist leaders of the ANC, civil war should be avoided.

Background: One of the big winners of African decolonization was Emperor Halie Selassie. His family now rules as far south as Zanzibar, assisted by an extensive network of agreements with Muslim tribals more interested in the status quo than USACS’ threatened world revolution.

Army: 10 divisions
Navy: 10 squadrons

Background: Egypt’s Gamal Abdel Nasser was flanked on the left all his career by USACS. As a result, European and American industrialists poured vast sums of wealth into the dictator’s pet projects and tacitly backed his efforts at union with states to the west and south. The results were as good as could be expected. On paper, the United Arab Republic and USACS are the best of allies, joined in revolutionist-tinged Muslim brotherhood. In reality, the current president of the UAR is quite happy to stake out a moderate economic and social position from his desk in Cairo.

Background: The United Kingdom has weathered all of the storms sent its way and emerged even stronger than it was after the fall of the Empire. When the Japanese began to grow through their aggression and turned towards the Commonwealth nations of Australia and New Zealand the Oceanics decided a more tightly unified front was needed to protect themselves and thus merged with the British Isles into a single political entity. Despite being separated by oceans the various members of the United Kingdom have pulled together to once more become the naval power they need to be stand together instead of falling alone one by one. Being one of the last functional democracies in Europe, the United Kingdom finds itself surrounded by monarchs with direct power and communist totalitarian regimes on all sides. This has lead to a severe revaluation of whom the United Kingdom should be friends with and who is the real threat.

Background: Emperor Napoleon I lost his bid at European hegemony after a failed invasion of Russia in 1812, but maintained a network of client states west of the Rhine. In 1913, this system was unified into a single nation. As the decades passed, the power of the Bonaparte emperors has eroded to a degree, but Paris is still resolutely monarchist in an increasingly socialist world.

Background: The Roman Republic, one of the remnants of the European Union experiment that collapsed in the 2020s, has a different meaning in each and every one of is towns. Near the capital, the infrequently and corruptly elected senate still manages to be the reincarnation of past glories. In Serb and Croat lands, that same body is both tolerated and scorned for its hands-off approach to local conflicts. In Greece, the Republic is viewed as imperfect but necessary protection. Perhaps only Rome would be able to save Europe if Iran invaded.

Background: In the years since the upheaval of the early 21st century, Romania has stayed relatively true to the ideals of the dead European Union; insuring its western minorities full franchise and heaping upon them lavish spending. However, tolerance of the Roma (Gypsies) is predictably low; and this may prove a catalyst for future upheaval.

With the help a spellbinding Chancellor, Heinrich Eichel, the Party institutionalized itself and proceeded to follow a program of irredentism as much as Marxism. Greater Germany now stands at the gates of prosperity, but is flanked by France and the Russian Bear. Meanwhile, Eichel is only getting older…

Background: Russia in the 21st century has been fairly quiet, and perhaps for the best. The chaos that happened to many other nations, especially to America, did not tear apart the Russian Federation, and they exploited the fact with a mass conquering of the states that split off from the end of the Soviet era. However, the invasions of St Petersburg and Sakhalin by Finland and Japan, respectively, has sent resentfulness to many of the Russians, who want all of what is considered ethnically Russian to join a nation of All the Russias.

Background: However lucky the Iranian Umma has been in recent years, Israel might have been more so. Ever since the 1970s, when paratroopers and tanks seized Damascus and the Suez, Arab resistance to the administration in Jerusalem has been divided and inconclusive. A Jewish-Arab socialist party has been control of the government for almost a decade now, and while Jews make up a slight minority in the state, autonomous zones and a prosperous economy have forestalled widespread opposition to the status quo.

Background: The crusades-born Order of Mecca has managed to stay alive through an alliance with the British in the recent centuries. Missionary activity has been favored as of late, and the military has been downsized in an attempt to paint over the old image of the aggressive crusader state eager to fight all of its neighbors. However, with its alliance with the British gone, the Order may need to reverse its policies and prepare for war with its neighbors

Background: In 1979, the Pahlavi Dynasty was brought down in religious revolution, a revolution that still continues to this day. Background: In the wake of independence and Partition from British rule in 1947 Jawharlal Nehru became the first Prime Minster of India, governing with heavy advice from Gandhi. Their clear unwillingness to subdue reticent princely states allowed for Kashmir and Hyderabad to assert sovereignty, and fostered an undue number of ascensions to Pakistan. The result was bloody communal violence, ethnic cleansing, and a massive refugee crisis. When the dust cleared Nehru had been overthrown and Gandhi assassinated by Hindu nationalists who seized power in a coup led by Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, the "Iron Man". He imposed martial law, suspended elections, and began a massive arms buildup. The resultant series of wars brought almost all of the subcontinent to heel. In 1983, Delhi and (and Islamabad) were annihilated by nuclear fire, but for Sardar Patel’s successors in Madras, radiation was a small price to pay.

Background: At one point the people of Siam were divided into two similar yet different nation states that both answered to a holy emperor. Those two states were known as Ayutthaya and Khmer. Some time ago, in a recession, those two nation-states broke out into an argument over the royal budget. Ayutthaya’s ministers believed that a significant portion should be cut, supposing that if they could tough it out a year or two, the surplus would balance out the economy. But Khmer’s elites did not want their citizens to suffer at all and only wanted to cut budget dedicated to things that deemed unnecessary. The Holy Emperor couldn't stop this government squabble, so the fed up people of Ayutthaya and Khmer rose up together and overthrew their squabbling leaders and the Emperor, creating the Free States of Siam.

The new regime’s successes quickly created great public confidence and an unprecedented level of stability. It is the position of the new Emperor of the Proletariat, however, that Japan must not rest upon its laurels.
