Mayor problems for team Roadkill

I realize I wasnt being clear about Sury, I understand our imposed rules require a Domination win. I was just stating I believe we can achieve that without Sury's land and before he can win by those other means.

Kill-stay on your turn.

Ok played about 8 turns or so. Here is where we are and I want a go ahead sign from the others.

At turn 1 Saladin asks us to join a war against the chinese. I decline as we want war with the dutch. I start the military machine up and I am building janissaries almost everywhere as these are as well good defensive units as offensive units. I split our initial stack in 2 and set them up to hit Nijmegen in 2 turns and Rotterdam in 4 turns so that they can join in about 8 turns in Amsterdam.

The forbidden palace is build and it saves us about 20 gold per turn. Not bad for a national wonder. I start jewish monasteries and temples in the persian border cities and I sent reinforcements over there. These cities have all 5 untis or so and that should be enough to withstand the small army Darius has.

civ4screenshot0003s.jpg

This city of Darius has more GP settled so it is a nice price after our war with the Dutch. I am starting to loathe Englands culture though. Even with the massive culture we are building in Nottingham we are loosing tiles to the English but we gained a deer finally. I check her cities and she has the hagia sophia in her top city, which explains the pressure but still Nottingham is producing more culture and I select the synagogue over there.

Printing Press is in. I check to see what we can trade and Sury is apparantly 3 turns from it as he offers almost nothing for it (200 gold). Next thing Victoria is in free market which means economics is gone. The english are researching constitution already? Crap. Ok, I will keep on going with full military mode and start on guilds and then go to Cuirasseers if everybody is ok with that. We need to pick up the pace with more cities and more GG's.

Sury is however to give us this for gunpowder:

Just kidding, lets keep our military edge a little.

If everybody agrees with the assault on my homeland (go Netherlands) then I will play another 8 turns or so tomorrow.

While I still am sick of the English (like you said - culture choke), I will agree to war with Dutch. The main issue is we must be at war.

If we can get that city with Silver free of Dutch culture that will justify the war. We badly need more happy sources.

i don't tihnk we should keep all those dutch cities though. with GPs at a premium, we should maybe only keep amsterdam.

By god, I set up harsh rules :) Only domination, no razing, need a GP to settle. Yes I am evil I tell you, EVIL!!!! MWUHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH:devil::devil::devil::spear:

Will be a tight battle though, since the Dutch have a power rating is 1,25 towards us (we have 0,8)

Nana Nana Nana dumdumdumdum (enter the shark). Will play in an hour.

Will report soon. Nijmegen is ours. Army on his way to The hague. Heavy fighting at Dariush (damn SoD of Willem). Darius looses a lot of his army, etc.... Stay tuned.

Update tonight. RL was intervening. Want to end this turn. It is nailbiting :p

Ok here we go again. What a turnset this has become. We have very good news and some very bad news. First of all I had some computer problems. My game crashed twice during this turnset so I had to replay this again from the 1470 save. So some things did change a little but just a little. I tried to play the same way I did before. One of the things that changed is that Darius did not attack Pasargadae but is currently outside Persepolis. But more on that later. This turnset has it all. Bloodshed, fierce fights, fights till the end. Happy endings, not so happy endings, stupid mistake which turned out good (phew). Stay tuned.

I left at 1470 with two stacks to hit Willem at 2 cities. Then I remembered SGOTM 15 where I did a similar thing with a stack of cuirasseers and lost them, especially with the high power rating of Willem. I send out the spies, well, to spy and try to locate his stack of doom. In the meantime I gather up the troops and keep building more like mad. Nijmegen, the Hague, Amsterdam, Rotterdam, all are lightly defended by something like 4-5 units. I can't find his stack of doom, damnit but I feel strong enough to attack the lower part of his empire. I declare war and go to Nijmegen. My spy then spots his SoD. It is close to the Persian border. I redirect reinforcements to the borders.

Next turn I use the spy on Nijmegen, succeeds, loose 2 trebs and get this:
civ4screenshot0007h.jpg

I settle the GS from the stack. I set science back to 0%, culture to 20% and select chemistry as the next tech, hoping to use it as trade bait.

I move my army towards the Hague. I spot Willems SoD towards Dariush. Redirect more troops tp there. In 1505 we get this little guy:
civ4screenshot0008m.jpg

I send our little pool of great people closer to the war lines. The next turn Willem tries out our defenses at Dariush while he is bombing and looses 3 units. Phew. Reinforcements will get there in time. We have a good stack of 10 units there. Lets hope it is enough. This battle will be hard. I take out 7 units and loose 1. WvO redirects his troops to the hill.

civ4screenshot0009j.jpg

In the mean time my army is at the Hagues door. WvO is knocking at our door and I do this:

civ4screenshot0010x.jpg

WvO decides it is payback time and man, does he have luck with trebs. I have 45% hill defense janissaries and CGII longbows but his trebs just retreat and deal massive damage to my defenders. I only kill 1 treb of the 4. Hard battle then where we loose 9 units and WvO 10 units more. We both lick our wounds and heal and I get more reinforcements when all of a sudden his SoD grows to this:

civ4screenshot0011s.jpg

I scouted his whole land and didn't find that big stack of trebs. Did he just build all those???? This will be very hard. Lets hope our stack lasts. Our main army moves towards Amsterdam in between. And here are our precious. 6 of them. We got another great general.

civ4screenshot0013r.jpg

I try my luck with Sury and beg for fur and he gives it to us. We got grocers in the capital and jewish shrine city. I also trade education with saladin for mercantalism and 270 gold. I trade also music to Zao to get on his good side for 150 gold. We need the money badly so I thought it was good. And then, the inevitable:

civ4screenshot0014c.jpg

We loose Dariush. In the last fight I think we killed 2 units or so to our 5-6 units. Alas, poor Dariush, we will have to retake you soon I guess. I then make the biggest mistake in my turnset. I attack Amsterdam and we get this:
civ4screenshot0015w.jpg

Take that Willem. You take Dariush, we take Nijmegen, the Hague and Amsterdam and still have a bigger army then you do and more on the way. But wait, I only had 2 GP on our main army. Whooops. Thank god Amsterdam has settled GP's otherwise I had to reload the game. Lol. Sorry. The fight at Dariush was just to intense.

For the next one. There is still an army at Persepolis but that city should be fine. Darius is bringing 7 troops or so and we have great defenders there. I have build a lot of knights so we should be able to counter strike soon (we need siege though). There is a small stack at Dariush in the forest. Those were our reinforcements who were 1 turn too late to defend.

Overall one of the most exciting turnsets I have ever played. I expected WvO to redirect his main army to defend his capitol, but nooooo, just keep on attacking Dariush, you little ........ I hope the next player can salvage the situation with that city. Our main army is still pretty much intact. Willem lost more then double the units to us and is now behind in score which is good if you ask me. Last trade I make is stone to Sury for 14 gold per turn. I didn't revolt to merc yet, but we could surely use that civ.

Good luck to the next one in line. I hope you guys didn't mind the long turnset. I really wanted to keep Dariush, but alas....

What is the mistake you mention? Is that Stack in Amsterdam about to wiped out?

losing That one city to gain three seems fine as long as Persepolis is still safe. And Amsterdam is a great city, 3 settled scientists and an Academy.

6 great people in the bank...we are not conquering fast enough!

I have no issues with having spare GP. I would rather have some extras, then stuck unable to take cities due to lack of them. Glad to see more keep coming our way.

I attacked Amsterdam with no GP in the stack. If there were no GP settled in Amsterdam I would have had a problem, since I wouldn't be able to settle one :p And no, our army is mostly intact, though roughed up and in desperate need of some healing. We lost about 9 units with the three cities and about 15 units defending. Willem lost over 40 or so. :)

For the next player, I am sending a great general to our stack in Amsterdam with a janissary. Keep an eye on that one. I have a small stack next to Dariush (4 units). A stack of 3 jannisaries is next to it and about 4 knights are ready next turn and on the way. We might want to build some siege asap after the knights. As far as I know I cancelled all move orders except for the spies who are on their way back to the front line.

Sorry I didnt wait for any comment or direction, but I had some time off from work (sick daughter) so I decided to play before Life got in the way.

Over all I think a good turnset...no mishaps. When you first look at the map you may not see alot of progress. I only captured two WvO cities, Rotterdam and Darius Kabir (our city he took). But I did kill alot of units of his and we are no double his power.

We are also 8 turns from rifles with enough gold in the bank to sustain 80% research until the are in.

Turn Report

T326 Keep all builds, whip some, hire specialists wherever It has any chance to pop a Great Person eventually. I notice Darius has a stack outside of Persopolis and has the walls down to 2% so I move two longbowmen there.
T327 Darius suicides his stack...then my game crashes. I reload. Crash. I reload...it works? i dont know why.
T 328 more reinforcements to Persopolis. Knights head west.
t329 Sury finishes Taj Mahal. I revolt to Merchantilism and move to assualt rotterdam.
T330 I begin to spread missionaries again, both in our cities and christ to the English
T331 AP resolution comes up...I select stop Trading with Darius
T332 Anachy over, our tech rate seems the same but our GPP have to up so its ok. WvO moves is SoD away from Darish Kabir and into Rotterdam...setting up a huge battle.
T333 WvO attacks our SOD but with know enough seige...we destroy him on defense. Unfortunately he does sneak a small knight stack past my lines and into our terrritory. I ignore it for now and focus on Rotterdam. This will cost me later.
I use a spy to revolt rotterdam and take it with light casualties. I setttle a Great General there.
Sury DOw Arabia. I close borders with Arabia in response.
Chemistry is done so I decide to trade Gunpowder to England and Sury. I get Liberalism and close to 3000 gold.
T334 Arabia asks us for help in his war....nope.
T335 WvO mini-stack of knights retakes Mjimegen. This causes a bit of a cluster that works out well for us but does halt my advance north.
T336 WvO and I are both moving units to try and get Njimegen.
T 337 I retake Njimegen lossing some knight but I destroy alot of WvO units scattered around the map and out of position. Great General born, 6 GP in reserve again.
WvO moves a new army to threaten Rotterdam. My army there lacks defense (Knights, maces and trebs) so I retreat.
T 338 Rotterdam lost to WvO.
Vicky ditches Sury and is Again a free state.
Sury Captures Baghdad and is winning against Arabia
T339 Replacable Parts is in...start Rifles.
I liberate Darish Kabir!

T340 Sury Asks us to DOw Arabia..I agree.
I retake Rotterdam.

PLans going forward:

I think we should take peace with WvO ( we may be able to get Astronomy) and repostion our army to Destroy England while Sury and Vicky are on the splits.

We could trade Chemistry to England before we attack to get some tech off her before she dies. If we do we should trade it to Sury Too.

Grmblll, this is a tough decision. I want the good Dutch cities more then the English ones but it would take out a lot of motherland crying. If we can take back Rotterdam, then make peace, conquer England (finally) and then get back to WvO to take out his core cities. He has a lot of junk cities up north which are not worth it. After that we should take out Darius and that should give us enough land to roll over the other ones. But.... we need more GP so we should start deciding where we want the NP which will be our best GP farm in the late game. Techwise it would be good to set path to communism/fascism for the free Gp's but we could also use cavalries. Do not forget to insert banks in our shrine cities. The gold is very welcome.

We also need a lot more espionage points so we can scan the cities of the others so we can finally see which cities we have to conquer and which need GP's. So if we attack the english then get the courthouses up there asap and then the other facilities providing spy points (communism is important again and opens up a wonder).

Sorry Cree, missed the last line :p Things aren't looking that bad. Banks on the way in 2 shrine cities. Persepolis should switch to it asap if you ask me. Overall good turnset but the English are on the definite list to go. They are even putting cultural pressure on Nijmegen and the Hague. England has 19 units right now. With a little siege this should be a very quick war. Do not trade the techs with her. But wait, she is a vassal again of Sury. I thought she was free again? Arf, that messes up our plans big time. She is also building security bureaus already so that would mean that she and Sury already have democracy.

If we want to do this, then we need a really short war. Really short so we can make peace with Sury asap again. Sury will come in with guns blazing as he is far ahead in techs.

We could also gun for Darius. Hun also has a settled GP. That means that we only need 2 GP for his 4 cities. I really would love to take out both Darius and Vicky but war with Sury right now is.... Darius only has 12 units left in his cities.

Discussion time. :)

OK - holding off on playing tonight based on comments above.

well dam, I missed Sury and Vicky reconciliation. I that case we should continue war against WvO and Darius. War with Sury is a bad move in my opinion.

Ok, war with Darius and WvO it is. Concentrate on the 4 Persian cities first and take out Utrecht and Maastricht as these are the only cities worth keeping (the two above Amsterdam) from the dutch. This will also release the cultural pressure on the silver (which we need!). Darius cities are all worth keeping if you ask me. Wvo will only offer some little money for peace anyway. Persepolis should get the bank next (BIG TIME). These 3 banks will net us in something like 36 gold per turn from shrines alone :) Even our capitol should maybe start one as gold is still a big issue and if the game drags on long enough then we should even consider building wall street in Persepolis.

About the English borders, we are slowly but very slowly gaining influence on these tiles. It is incredible how slow it is going especially with 32 culture per turn and more. I don't know if I have ever seen borders hold up that long. Damn AP vote that time and not being able to conquer the English. Grrrr.
