Just got Civ III. For our games, we never seem to be even... one of us always takes a seriously dominating lead over the other. In our latest game (with the patch, since our last game continuously crashed once she reached 666 points), I have taken a commanding lead. I was way behind, so when she found me, she offered me the 5 techs she had that I didn't. I gave her the one I had, that she didn't.

She was shortyl regretting that, since shortly after, I was the first person to get Masonry, I think, and I got a great leader, and built the Pyramids, all within three turns. Now, I have 175% her score, and upon retiring to see where the hell the 6th Civ was, we found out the Chinese have their OWN CONTINENT, with me, her, the Romans, the Americans, and the seriously doomed Russians crammed onto the other continent... the SMALLER one, I might add.

How can I convince her we don't need to restart, since my score is about the same as the 2nd and 3rd place scores combined?

how close is the other continent? Just cuz the chinese have their own continent doesn't mean that the game is hopeless. this becomes a race to see who can populate the other continent before anyone else gets there.

Assuming it's close, it's not all that bad a situation. Assuming it's farther away, well, that gives you time to take out the other civs and build your infrastructure to move to the new continent.

Hopeless? No. Challenging, yes.

Just try to convince her that if she gets there first and can establish a foothold, her game will be looking much better.

Just offer her to pay now for the five techs she gave you.
(Some kind of loan...)

chinese have continent, but were unable to trade techs early. they will be probably very backward

The game is really far from over, having their own landmass will not make China a superpower. They will though if your wife keeps giving away techs. The difficult part will be warring against such a civ once railroads are laid down. Amphibious assaults are suicidal at this point, unless uber-stacks of units are landed to survive the counter-attack.

The good thing about having civs crammed in on your continent is that you can trade quicker on that continent, and conquer each smaller civ. Does China have any resources? If they lack iron, saltpeter, horses, then it'll be hard for them to become a super power.

Well, I have given her three techs since then, Incense, and about 400 gold, whenever I can. I am also beating the almighty crap out of the Americans, because they keep trying to steal her land and rip her off and make life hard.

Well, first person to get Lighthouse, or anything better than a Galley, can make it to China, no problem. She just gets very discouraged if she isn't first for the entire game.

And, of course, I have to rub it in that I am usually in her shoes for every game we play.

I don't think we can help you. I mean, you are not playing CIV, you are playing "make-my-wife-happy" game, and that's very very difficult. I'd say, way above Sid level. ;)

Far beyond Sid, I think. :crazyeye:
You could just destroy her and finish the game yourself.
Nah. Bad idea.
I'm really glad my wife has never expressed any interest in Civ. :)

It wasn't free... she gave me tech at the start in order for "favors" later on. We only do all this trading during "Early Period"... once we get to Medieval ages, it's everyone for themselves. She just doesn't want to get savaged by the AI's... and we're only on regent.

*Sigh* I've gotten 378% on Civ II, playing on Deity.... but Civ III is a whole nother thingamajig. Me and her are evenly matched... neither of us is REALLY good. But we're getting there :) We're still experimenting with which race we wanna be. I am totally a Celt, in blood and in game... Agricultural Religious? Forget about it! Used to be I couldnt LIVE without Industrious, but Agricultural is just like Industrious.... instead of faster workers, I have to pump out SO MANY workers to keep my populations down and my people happy.

Wondering about "favors"...

Celts are an excellent choice, agr being most ppl's fav trait and rel a good match for agr. Their UU is imhso the best in the game.

Man you are one lucky guy to have a wife that plays civ, or any computer game for that matter. Considering most girls dont like any video games. Man, I hope im that lucky in finding a cool chick like that. You lucky S.O.B.

I think girls do like playing games - just they get games with themes that interests them (like, eh... the sims). Just my 5 cents, didn't mean to dis' ya !

Remind her that if you're "in first for the entire game", you're more likely to get attacked. Being in the middle of the pack for a while is actually good for you. Very few victories are Histograph.

Oh, no kidding.

In our previous game, she was India. She never once initiated a war, she never once moved troops near enemy territory... she gave money freely, had a wonderful culture, and was generally nice.

She was constantly being attacked, getting ganged with alliances, backstabbed, pillaged, and generally getting the poop end of the stick.

She was peaceful, and yet from the sheer number of battles she fought, she had three great military leaders, which meant three armies, which meant her counterattack was hell itself. One year, the Incas declared war, and she said "Ok, thats it," and seven turns later, there was no Incan empire.

*sigh*

Now that I'm in first, it's by such a HUGE margin, no-one will attack me except the Americans. My score is 220% of theirs.

Apparently, if your score is higher, they hate you (IE, India 700, Inca 500). If your score is WAY higher (Celts 700, America 300-something,) they're too afraid to hate you.

We might have to start playing on higher difficulty levels.

Just something I noticed... How could you have gotten a Great Leader from researching Masonry? You said that China were in the game, and they start with that tech...

I think it was Masonry... it was a really early one, I know that. I built Pyramids with the leader, so I thought it was Masonry....
